The useful nutrition labels on foods now contain a new element: Added Sugars. The listing now allowsconsumers to tell how much sugar is naturally occurring and how much is added. This can be importantwhen comparing products.
One example, according to the Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter: Compare 12 ounces oflemon-lime soda to 100 percent pineapple juice. Twelve ounces of either drink contain 38 grams ofsugar. The difference is that all of the sugar in soda is added, while the pineapple juice contains allnaturally occurring sugars that are also good sources of vitamin C, Thiamin, folate and vitamin B6.The information can also help with food choices. Higher intake of added sugars has been associated withheart disease and metabolic syndrome, according to Alice Lichtenstein of Tufts.
On the new labels, you will be able to see the percentage of daily value of the added sugars. If the value ofadded sugar is 5 percent or less, it is a low-sugar food. If the value is 20 percent or more, it is a highsugar food. It's recommended to limit the added sugars to less than 10 percent of daily calories.
In evaluating nutrition, first look for the total gram weight of sugar in the product. Below that totalsugar number you will find the amount of sugar that was added. So a product with a total of 12 gramsof sugar might be comprised of 10 grams of added sugar. This means that only 2 grams of sugarnaturally occur in the product itself. Added sugars are not just cane sugar, but also ingredients likeconcentrated fruit juices, maple syrup, molasses and even honey -- anything that is added to the food tocreate extra sweetness. These always raise the calorie count but may not necessarily add nutrition.

Labor Day, September 4th this year, marks the unofficial end of summerbut you may not realize that this federal holiday has a serious past.
Enjoy an ice cream cone, have a barbecue or go for an evening stroll.Whatever you do, you are celebrating the last weekend of summer, though the calendar might disagree.
This year marks the 123rd celebration of Labor Day. After much ado for many years, PresidentGrover Cleveland signed the Labor Day proclamation in 1894. It is the only holiday in the yearthat does not focus on an individual or a national event. The path to this proclamation was not asimple one. Rather, it was marked with hard work and risk by labor leaders and many thousandsof workers. While the work toward getting a labor day began years before, it was a celebration bythe Knights of Labor in 1882 that brought the cause to the public’s attention.
More than 20,000 demonstrators paraded in New York City. Many carried signs that said "8hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 8 hours for recreation." In addition to a day of rest for workers, they paraded for better working conditions.
The Labor Day movement spread from East to West over the following years. In 1887, Coloradowas the first state to declare Labor Day a state holiday. By 1893, more than half of the states hadan official Labor Day. Then, a bill for a national Labor Day was introduced in Congress. WhenPresident Cleveland signed it on June 28, 1894, he thought it was a good political move. But hewas not reelected.

Resident Profile: Mickey Risken
Mickey Risken — Maurice “Mickey” Risken was born December 16, 1925 inPotrerillos, Chile. His parents met and married in 1924 in Montana where his fatherworked for Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The couple soon moved to Chile tohelp build a new refinery and quickly started their family. Mickey and his youngersister, Gail, grew up learning both English and Spanish. Every three years the familywould take a three month vacation and the most memorable trip for Mickey wastaken in 1940 when his family visited the United States to tour many of the nationalparks in the West.
Mickey returned to the United States in July 1941 to attend high school in Sacramento, but was notallowed to graduate as he was required to sign up for the draft instead. He started basic training at CampRoberts in California in February 1944. He served as a combat soldier in General Patton’s Third Army andwas involved in the Battle of the Bulge. When the war in Europe was over, Mickey’s unit spent time inAustria guarding 31,000 prisoners of war and in his spare time he learned to ski.
When Mickey returned home, he went to college in Sacramento as well as the Montana School ofMines and Engineering and then later the University of Berkeley for Geological Engineering Sciences.During this time, he joined the National Ski Patrol in which his unit designed ski runs and lift locations forthe Squaw Valley Resort and he eventually tried out for the Olympics, but failed to qualify.
In 1953 he met his first wife, Virginia, at Cal Berkeley. She had two boys; John and Jared, whomMickey adopted and raised as his own sons. Mickey and Virginia had two sons together; Philip and Forrestwhile Mickey began working for construction companies building concrete dams. Over a period of fortyyears, he managed the construction of seven major dams all over the Western United States, includinginstalling the last power unit at Hoover Dam. He later worked for Sprint Telephone Company building cellsites until he suffered a massive heart attack in 2001. After heart surgery, Mickey was in a coma for a monthcaused by a MRSA infection.
Mickey and Virginia lived in Walnut Creek and enjoyed sixty years of marriage until her passing in 2013.Mickey knew he must move to a community which could meet his care needs. He chose Carlton Senior LivingConcord as his new home and soon met Marjorie, an outgoing fellow resident. The two hit it off and weremarried on October 25, 2014 in the courtyard of CSL Concord surrounded by family and friends. Later, thenewly-wed couple moved to Carlton Senior Living Pleasant Hill where Mickey enjoys sharing the stories ofhis family and his many unique life experiences. Mickey is proud of the legacy he has created through his foursons, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. — Patrick Coleman

All my life I’d heard my father speak of the place where he was born and so Tom and I decided to take ourfirst trip to Sicily. The only reason I remembered the town is because he’d said that it sounded like chairwith an “a’ tacked on. So after more years than I’ll identify, I was determined to find whoever was left ofour relatives in Cerda. Step one was to ask a local cousin for information; his mother had gone to Cerdatwice to visit her sister. In his deceased mother’s collection of memorabilia were three addresses; I quicklyengaged an Italian friend to write letters for me and waited with great anticipation. After several weeks Inot only received one reply but three with a warm welcome to come to Cerda.
It’s not possible to express in words the excitement of seeing a family for the first time that you didn’t evenknow existed. We were welcomed into the family with love, warmth, and of course, delicious food. “was commanded often. Not only did we find three relatives but nine times that, of all ages waiting togetherfor us to arrive. We were given a taste of what life is like in a small remote mountain village where timealmost stands still. The house where my father was born is still standing!
When we returned to Cerda years later along with our son Tim and his wife, Susan; my two sisters andtheir mates, my newest daughter-in-law who is from Venice, Italy, and the cousin and his wife who I firstmentioned. They, too, were all welcomed with genuine love and caring as we were on our first visit.
Upon returning home from the airport, almost immediately, the phone rang; it was my half-brother wholives in Buffalo, New York. He rarely has phoned or visited, so I was surprised at the call. It was not goodnews. He reported that he’d had brain cancer surgery and would be undergoing treatment soon; that he hadonly three months to live without treatment. Of course, I was shaken at the unexpected news. My sistersand I decided to fly to Buffalo to see him while he was well and energetic. He was still playing golf, enjoying his family, and living a normal life during his chemo and radiation treatments, but quite suddenlyhe started coughing and was hospitalized. His last three weeks were spent with his family standing bedside, hoping for the miracle that didn’t happen.
The good part of this story is that we spent quality time with his wife; five daughters and their spouses whoare now mostly baby boomers and have their own children of all ages. Even though I had met my niecesonly once twenty-five years ago, they welcomed us as if we’d seen each other yesterday, giving muscle to theold adage that “blood is thicker than water.” We were indeed privileged to experience the same brand ofSicilian warmth that had been extended to us in Cerda.
While in Buffalo we visited my very active eighty-two year old uncle, the last living sibling of my father. We’d seen my uncle only once before. His comments were, sadly, “I think that we all missed the pleasure ofeach others company for too many years.”
My sisters and I returned home with heavy hearts. We had left our only brother dying in the hospital. Inaddition, our hearts were heavy for all that might have been. Yet we came home richer and forever changedfor having spent time with my brother’s family; just as we had from our visit in Sicily.
The moral of this story is that it is a pity to miss those weekends and/or evenings when our living roomscould be filled with laughter, chatter, and sharing good wine. It’s worth the effort and cost involved totravel across the country whenever possible. When travel is impossible, corresponding with relatives inanother country is also rewarding and exciting. The other alternatives are phone calls, text messages andemail. In today’s world there are almost no valid excuses not to stay connected to, or establish a connectionwith your family.
The bonus for everyone involved is the history and memories that can never be buried even after our lovedones gone.
