Greetings Butler County 4-H Families, There is a lot going on in Butler County 4-H as spring approaches! Be sure

to look through this newsletter for important updates and opportunities 4-

H has to offer.

One change for the 4-H year is my role with ISU Extension and Outreach in

Butler County. I am happy to announce that I have accepted the County

Program Director position. At this time, Beth and I are here to help you

out. Please let us know if you need anything! We hope to bring a new

youth coordinator on board.

Spring is a great time to organize your goals and start your fair exhibits. Be

sure to update your calendars with all of the upcoming deadlines! If you

show animals, be sure to pay attention to the YQCA and Species’ Updates

Sections. Check out the new Challenge Classes for the 2020 Butler County

Fair. Be sure to look at the workshops, camps, and conferences 4-H has to

offer!

Also remember to read the Friday Fact emails I occasionally send out. As

fair approaches, I will start up the weekly Friday Facts

that count down the 10 weeks leading up to fair!

Head’s Up! FSQA (Food Safety Quality Assurance) for those who exhibit livestock

at the fair is now YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals)

Who: All Beef, Sheep, Dairy/Dairy Goat, Swine, Meat Goat, Poultry, and Rabbit 4th-12th grade exhibitors.

This is a REQUIREMENT, if you don’t get certified—you DO NOT SHOW.

YQCA is new to the state and there will no longer be FSQA.

This year only YQCA will be accepted.

If your child took an FSQA test in the past and it HAS NOT expired—you are fine! Check 4HOnline for your

expiration date or contact Tayler.

YQCA is to continually provide a current, peer-reviewed, quality curriculum for youth quality assurance

training and certification. Members may complete an online course for $12 with a credit card. For more

information and how to take the course please go to https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/yqca.

Once you have completed YQCA please send Tayler the certificate of completion.

There will no longer be FSQA face-to-face trainings at Hawkeye.

Where are your Animals?

Any member who is keeping his/her livestock at a place other than home needs to notify the

Extension Office by May 15th. Email me at the office telling us where the animals are located. NO phone

calls please, we need written documentation. **If a spot check is made and animals are not at home

and we have no written documentation of where they are, those animals will not be eligible to show.

Upcoming Livestock Weigh-ins:

Swine Weigh-In: March 14th from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Butler County Fairgrounds. See species

update for more information. Call the office to let us know you are attending this weigh-in!

Sheep/Meat Goat Weigh-in: April 25th from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Butler County Fairgrounds. All

market lambs, commercial breeding ewes, and state fair sheep, as well as all market meat goats, state

fair meat goats, and breeding does must attend this weigh-in. Call the office to let us know you are

attending this weigh-in!

Two Step Process to Attend Fair: 4HOnline and Fair Entry Deadlines

Step 1. 4HOnline: https://iowa.4honline.com

May 15—Identify all animals not attending a weigh-in and verify information on all market animals

that attended a weigh-in. Help sheets can be found on our website or at http://

www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders

Static exhibits only need to do Fair Entry

Leaders:

Leader’s Pre-Fair Meeting will be held April 16th at 6:30 pm. Attendance is very important as we

will be covering fair updates, receiving club assignments, and all other things fair.

Club Banners are due to the Extension Office by May 15th.

Make sure 4-H’ers are set to meet their 50% club meeting attendance requirement so they can

exhibit at the fair!

If you didn’t attend Annual Training, remember to complete it online by March 1st.

Challenge Classes:

Challenge Classes for the 2020 Butler County Fair will be:

Food & Nutrition Challenge Recipe: Whole Grain Cereal Treats

Locate the recipe on our website or in the fair book and make it.

Photography Challenge: “Food”

Food Photography helps brand and market food for companies by increasing them and drawing in new customers. Working

with food photography has the ability to make consumers stop, look, and want to taste. This is usually an action that the

human body can’t ignore! Can’t wait to see what you can capture!

Rules and descriptions can be found on our 4-H website under County Fair Information now or in the 2020 Fair Book once available.

Opportunities

Scholarships:

Butler County 4-H offers up to $500 in scholarships! Visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/butler/4h for the application.

Deadline April 1.

Bolin Memorial Scholarship: $200 scholarship! Visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/butler/4h for the application.

Deadline April 1.

Butler County Pork Promoters: The Pork Promoters offer a $500 scholarship to a youth whose parents are members.

Deadline May 1.

Butler County Cattlemen Scholarships: The Cattlemen offer a $250 scholarship to a youth whose parents or grandparents

are members. Deadline May 1.

IFAA Winner’s Circle Scholarships — College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock projects and current

undergraduate students may apply for $161,500 in scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural

Advancement (IFAA). Incoming freshmen applications post-mark deadline, April 1 https://www.iowastatefair.org/

Clothing Event:

Clothing Selection, $15 Challenge, and Fashion Revue judging will be Sunday, June 14th beginning at 2:00 pm.

The Style Show will be during Communication’s Day at the fair on June 27th.

* Judging schedules will be set up after entries are made. Each entry’s judging is ≈15 minutes.

* Participation in both judging and the Style Show is required.

Communication’s Day: Includes Working Exhibits, Share-the-Fun talents, Educational Presentations, and Extemporaneous Speaking.

Iowa 4-H Youth Conference:

June 30—July 2, 2020— “Strive for Gold”

8th-12th graders

Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of

speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've

completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this

conference! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! You

will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to

take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are

opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus,

Animal Science Round-Up is for youth who want to focus on Beef, Dairy, Horse, Meat Goat, Poultry, Sheep, or

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign: This annual campaign is conducted by youth members of the State 4-H Council Finance

Committee. 4-H Clubs across the state are encouraged to donate $3 per 4-H member (4th-12th

grade). The funds raised benefit financial aid, State 4-H Conference, and other projects as voted

upon by the State 4-H Council. The deadline to Extension Office is May 15th.

2020 4-H Zoo Trip to Omaha:

Come join other 6-8th grade 4-Her's from surrounding counties for a fun filled sleeping bag safari at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium on April 4th & 5th, 2020. The cost covers transportation, zoo admission, camp-out fee, 2 afternoon snacks, breakfast and an IMAX movie. Seats are limited for each county, get your registration in today!!

Species’ Updates

All 4-H/FFA animal exhibitors must be certified in YQCA, except those exhibiting only horse, pets, and/or dog. This is required

of exhibitors at county and state fair.

Beef: Drug Affidavits are required for all beef animals. Remember to record all treatments given to your animals.

Breeding Beef must be ID’d in 4HOnline by May 15. If you originally weighed your heifer in as a market heifer, the animal does NOT need

to be ID’d again in 4HOnline as a breeding heifer. It just needs to be entered correctly for the fair. All heifers MUST have birth dates

listed.

Returning Bucket/Bottle Calf Class! Must be in 4th-12th grade to exhibit, calf must have been a bucket/bottle calf last year and have

attended weigh-in. Info will be in Fair Book

ALL Breeding Beef (purebred or commercial) MUST have a tattoo. Calfhood vaccination is not an acceptable ID as the primary tattoo. A

secondary method of ID is required for ALL breeding beef. This secondary ID can be a calfhood vaccination number or an official 4-H ear

tag if the animal is not registered.

Sheep and Meat Goat: Drug Affidavits are required for all sheep and meat goats. Remember to record all treatments given to your animals.

Weigh-In is scheduled for April 25th . Verify weighed animals in 4HOnline by May 15. ALL State Fair sheep (market, commercial and

purebred breeding) and meat goats (market wethers and breeding does) must attend weigh-in.

ID animals not attending a weigh-in in 4HOnline by May 15 (purebred ewes for county fair only—commercial ewes must attend weigh-in).

Birth dates are required for ALL Breeding Does. Please have this information at weigh-in for those attending.

Butler County Raised Market Sheep and Market Meat Goat Forms due April 25th. Forms can be found on our website and attached.

Swine: If you are a new swine exhibitor, you will need to get a Premise ID#. Contact the office for help.

Show is non-terminal.

Drug Affidavits are required for all swine. Remember to record all treatments given to your animals.

Weigh-In is scheduled for March 14th. All derby pigs must attend.

Market pigs may attend weigh-in or tag your own by April 6th. Please check out tags from the office.

Breeding gilts may attend weigh-in, or tagged and ID’d in 4Honline by May 15.

Ear notches are required for all pigs.

Breeding Division — No maximum number of entries. Exhibitors do not need to show in either market or derby classes to be eligible to

exhibit in the breeding division. Exhibitors are still only allowed to enter a maximum of six pigs for fair. Butler County Raised Market Swine Forms due April 6th. Forms can be found on our website and attached.

Horse: 4HOnline ID required by May 15.

YOU MUST UPLOAD PHOTOS OF EACH HORSE.

Bucket/Bottle Animals: 4HOnline ID required by May 15. More information can be found on our website now and will be

mailed to you after ID’s are made. Bucket/Bottle Calf—K-12th grade. Bucket/Bottle Lamb and Kid—K-3rd grade.

Dairy/Dairy Goat: 4HOnline ID required by May 15.

Poultry: 4HOnline ID required by May 15. Pullorum testing required before fair.

Rabbit: 4HOnline ID required by May 15. Tattoos required before fair. State Fair requires it in the left ear.

Pets: 4HOnline ID required by May 15. Dogs and cats must have rabies vaccination records at fair.
