YOuNG PATIeNTS in the new emergency Department at The Prince Charles Hospital won’t be able to keep the smiles off their faces, thanks to the Honda Foundation.

Through The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, Honda is providing almost $4000 worth of toys and equipment to keep kids happy while they’re in hospital.

Kate Ashton, CeO of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, said hospital can be scary for children and their parents. “No one likes being stuck in hospital, but adults can at least understand why it’s necessary. For children, it can be confusing and frightening.

That’s why we’re so thrilled to have the Honda Foundation’s support to make coming to hospital a less scary experience,”

Ms Ashton said. “The staff are excited to be

able to get a variety of toys and games for children of all ages. Happy kids hopes to ease the pressure for parents at a stressful time.” Ms Ashton said.

The Honda Foundation has funded developmental toys, videos and equipment for the Paediatric emergency Department.

Northside Honda Principal Robert Brown said, “Giving back to the community is hugely important, the team at Nundah were very keen to help support the vital work of the Prince Charles Hospital in the local community.”

For more information about research supported by The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation visit www.tpchfoundation.org.au.

JAN IRONS, A QuIeT, unassum-ing resident of Nundah for 35 years, doesn’t like to make a big song and dance. With a desire to help others and get out of her comfort zone, Jan has selflessly dedicated 33 years volunteer service in the SeS.

Jan spent her time in the SeS as group leader of the North eastern group, which covers suburbs from Fortitude Valley north to Sandgate and from Gympic Road east to the Airport.

Jan has seen and experi-enced many things while volun-teering with the SeS. Just some of these include involvement with the SeS Helicopter rescue squad, the Charleville floods, Ingham floods, Cyclone Yasi and the hailstorm in north Brisbane in 1985, but she can clearly recall her most emotional. “We partici-pated in the ANZAC Day parade

in Innisfail, follow-ing Cyclone Larry. We were all in tears in the first 2 minutes from the gratitude expressed to us by the spectators.”

Jan’s commitment to the SeS has now come to an end. She has met many wonderful people and has learnt much along the way. “My time with the SeS has made me more aware of those around me. I’ve learnt from my experiences, that life is not only very precious, but can be very short, so relish it while you can,” she says, wisely.

The SES is a volunteer organisation and is designed to help Queensland communities in times of emergency and disaster. Each year the SES receives thousands of calls for assistance.

SPReAD YOu WINGS this winter and take flight with a healthy lifestyle renovation. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle or committing to one comes as a package deal. Diet + exercise = Results. Simple.

People can do pretty well with one or the other but it is the combination that proves most valuable in reaching the goals typical of the average person.

If you are looking to renovate your routine and make progress you don’t have to exercise from the rooster’s crow to the cows

coming home. There are two parts in the equation.

The first is variation in your exercise regime. Muscle memory can stop you from losing weight, growing mus-cle and staying motivated. The human body can adapt to particular movements. Change then becomes the catalyst in sparking the body to produc-ing larger volumes of various hormones that promote weight loss and muscle growth. Throw-ing in a new group fitness class

every month or having a PT run through new exercises and training programs can lift you to new levels while keeping hard work interesting for you.

eating clean is the second part of seeing fast results and possibly the most important change. Man was made tall and strong from eating raw from the land.

Our weight gain is not sur-prisingly due to the body’s slow adaptation to a rapid evolution of processed food in our diets.

To adopt a clean eating ap-proach cut out sugars, reduce carbohydrates and eat smaller portions, especially if you have a desk job.

Clayfield Jewellery was founded in 1994 and

was purchased by Trevor Sim, in the year 2000 and has gone from strength to

strength since then.

Q: How long have you been in Nundah?

We have been in Nundah since stage 1 of the new Circa Nundah development opened, which was back in July 2007.

Q: What sets Clayfield Jewel-lery apart from other jewellers?

We offer a high level of friendly and knowledgeable service to our clients, especially those who wish to have a unique piece of jewel-lery custom designed for them and made by our jewellers.

Having the onsite workshop also allows us to offer a high turn around on jewellery repairs and remodeling that sets us apart from other jewellery stores.

Q: What can customers expect when they come to Clayfield Jewellery?

When customers first walk in the

door they enter a warm, relaxed, modern and ambient environ-ment. We are particularly proud of the high quality of hand-crafted jewellery produced by our onsite workshop.

As with all modern businesses, we are always adapting and changing to grow with the cur-rents times and trends, but one thing that will never change at Clayfield Jewellery is our dedication to old-fashioned good service.Clayfield Jewellery Shop 2/1193Sandgate Road, Nundah Village

ESTABLISHED IN NUNDAH for nine years, PandaPearls is a treas-ure trove for collectors and those who appreciate beautiful things.

Owner Amanda Stein chose Nundah for her flagship store due to its proximity to Brisbane Airport, CBD and access to pretty much everything you need at your doorstep. ‘It’s been great to see the investment by Circa Nundah and other businesses and see their vision that is now coming to fruition!’

PandaPearls Australia prides

itself on being a ‘one stop pearl shop’ with beautiful pearls sourced from around the world. From an Australian south sea strand through to gorgeous baroque pearls and our now ‘famous triple twist’, PandaPearls has something for every budget and every taste.

A huge aspect of Amanda’s business has been her passion for antique jewellery and ability to team it with gorgeous, matching pearl strands.

The establishment of the

‘Sidewalk Sunday’ was a simple idea of inviting similar minded people to display quality ‘be-spoke’ items for sale on a Sun-day outside PandaPearls with site fees, sausage sizzle, raffle prizes and donations going directly to the cause of choice. From the Geebung Special School, Cancer Council, RSPCA...this month, LEGACY has been chosen with the Sidewalk Sunday falling on 28 April just after ANZAC DayEnquires Donna or Amanda @ PandaPearls on 07 3256 8418.

THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE holds english classes each Monday and Thurs-day, 10am to 12pm. Our teachers cater for all skill levels from basic to conversational.

These classes are a fun way of enhancing your English language skill, broadening your vocabulary, and getting to know other people in our community. No booking needed, just come along on the day. Gold coin donation.

English Classes

Sue Carpenter is one of the main English class tutors. Having completed her TESOL (Teach-ing English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate in 2006, Sue began teaching English in Vietnam in 2007 and at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre in 2008.

What made you want to teach English? I was always good at English, but it was when I began travelling that I really got the bug. I was inspired by the locals, I’d key into their level of English, and we’d have some wonderful conversations. I learned to engage them as a

Making the Difference person, not as a tourist, and I found that what-ever country I was in, it wasn’t as important as the people; the people are what really made the place. What Best Outcome? When my students grasp enough English to gain confidence, move with it, and gain employment.

What’s really fulfilling is that the students come back to the classes because they want to – there’s no obligation for them, they come because they enjoy it, because we have fun.

I’m definitely not tired of tutoring; it’s enjoy-able and rewarding, and I get as much out of it as my students do.

Come and join “Healthy Life, Happy Life 2013” at Nundah Neighbourhood Centre for Men’s Health Week 10-16 June.

A WORLD-FIRST YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH campaign that uses a mobile app to engage young people in mental health issues was launched in Federation Square today. Run-ning during March, The Fifth Army campaign focuses on three of the biggest issues affecting young Australians – bullying, depression and homophobia.

The Fifth Army is an innovative partnership between the Cotton On Foundation, not-for-profit arm of fashion retailer the Cotton On Group and headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation.

“We know that suicide is the leading cause

of death for Australians aged under 25,” head-space CEO Mr Chris Tanti said.

As well as the iPhone or Android app, The Fifth Army is being promoted through a dedi-cated website, 460 Cotton On Group stores across the country.

Three Star General of The Fifth Army, Ruby Rose said the campaign is about everybody getting together and taking action to make a difference. To learn more about The Fifth Army or to get involved visit www.fiftharmy.com.au and for further information contact headspace Nundah, 1264 Sandgate Rd, Nundah

ONE OF THE NEW kIDS ON THE BLOCk in Nundah is the Multicultural Development Association, or MDA, as most people know them. They officially launched their new Northside Office on Jenner Street in March, with Deputy Prime Minister and local federal member Wayne Swan doing the honours.

MDA is a settlement organisation com-mitted to achieving the best settlement out-comes for refugees and asylum seekers, and working actively to promote multiculturalism.

The office is already becoming a hub with many activities happening in the community space. This includes English and Lifeskills classes for new arrivals.

MDA CEO kerrin Benson said Nundah was the right location for MDA because of its

proximity to many of MDA’s northside clients and the vibrancy of Nundah and its people.

“One of the things we noticed immediately when we settled in Nundah is the sense of com-munity that exists. This suburb does feel like a close-knit village,” kerrin said.

“We intend to support the many local busi-nesses that surround us and we have already started this.”

There are many opportunities for locals to become involved in MDA, including volunteering, donating and attending our community events. Two major events coming up are the Lantern Parade Walk for Refugees on Thursday 6 June in the city and the World Refugee Day Community Festival on Sunday 23 June at the Annerley Soc-cer Club Fields.

NEVER HAS A CUP OF COF-FEE been so well received as was mine the morning I dropped by Espresso Train to chat with their new manager: kirsty Balmer. A place where you feel welcome the moment you walk through the door, kirsty herself will greet you from be-hind the coffee machine with a warm and generous smile.

The Espresso Train, an arm of the Nundah Commu-nity Enterprise Co-operative (NCEC) brings hope and meaning to the lives of many in the form of employment (and training) at the Café and

Catering service for people living with mental illness, or who have learning difficulties, or intellectual disabilities.

kirsty, being a woman with vision saw the opportu-nity to manage the not-for-profit, social enterprise as one not to be missed.

She explains, ‘What started out 10 years ago as a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ café has continuously grown through the reinvestment of profit’, to evolve into the business that stands today; one that focuses on the individual employees’ potential, and not

their limitations. Certainly, a place where

you can enjoy the pleasures of fantastic coffee and deli-cious food, but know that by doing so, - you are directly contributing to positively im-pacting the lives of disadvan-taged individuals.

Aptly named for its con-venient location directly opposite the Nundah train station, the Espresso Train can be found at 46 Station Street. The Café is open 6 days a week (Sunday – Friday) from 6:30am until 2:00pm.

HAS IT PASSED? Did you catch it? Did you plan for it? For family? For play? Or perhaps to observe the event in religious terms. The Easter weekend.

Remember last time we spoke about values, goals and focusing on positive motivation. Did you include renewal? Did you include activities and ideas to keep the energy in the fuel tank? Activities in line with your goals for how you want your relation-ships to be with family or friends or faith?

Relationships are renewing (and some-times our relationships also need renewing so there is space for us too). Think about this - if you had to drive in the middle of the night to pick up at mate stuck on the side of the road and there is no fuel in your fuel tank could you do it?  Could any amount of turn-ing the key, pumping the accelerator and turning the wheel get you there with no fuel?

What is your fuel? And have you included the right amounts of it to keep you going as well as those you love. How much do you feature in your own life?  I encourage you to consider a little compassion to-wards yourself, and to plan for your renewal and the renewal of your relationships. After all - you’re a person too aren’t you?

A HUMBLE HOUSE IN THE QUIET back-streets of Nundah has undergone a radical transformation. But this has not been your run-of-the-mill renovation. Sure, there were the usual trucks and utes lining the street. But then there was 24/7 security and traffic controllers keeping prying eyes out. Local residents have reportedly had to sign confi-dentiality agreements, while passers-by have

been banned from taking photos. It’s all part of a reality renovation show due to air later this year.

The camera crew with their various cater-ing and editing entourage and marquees transformed a quiet Nundah street for a whirlwind 10 days of filming this March. The neighbourhood seemed to have welcomed all the fuss, with the local coffee shop doing a roaring trade providing the crew with their caffeine fix.

The 3 bedroom weatherboard house was bought by its current owners last June and local homeowners hope the show will bring not just publicity to the area but an additional boost to house prices. In a place like Nundah, with so many post-war homes ripe for renova-tion and investment, homeowners’ hopes are well-founded. When renovations are done well, they can bring in great returns.

We’ll all be waiting with bated breath to see the outcome of this ugly duckling being transformed into the proverbial swan later in the year.

WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL IF WE HAD a real estate crystal ball? Unfortunately for us, none of the fabulous boutique shops we have in Nundah Village have any working ones in stock at the moment. So for now, we have to look back at the recent past to help us assess the state of our local property market.

As there is a time lag of up to 12 weeks between when a property sale is completed and the details of that sale being publicly available (through information providers such as Pricefinder or RP Data), it is only at the end of March 2013 that we can safely say we have accurate data for 2012.

According to the data provided by RP Data, 2012 saw a total of 270 true residential sales in Nundah for the year. This is up from 243 sales in 2011, and similar to the level of 2010 at 277.

Analysis from RP Data shows a decline of 4.1% of the unit median sale price during

2012. The median sale price of a 2 bedroom unit in Nundah for 2012 was $338,500, while the highest sale price achieved for a unit was $540,000 for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom and 2 garage apartment sold in October. Buyer activity in the unit marketplace has already increased with agents seeing multiple offers and strong quick results for sellers if the marketing and pricing strategy are right. In fact, based on the data received so far, the median price recorded for January 2013 for units is sitting at $388,000, and could be a sign of some recovery in this segment of the Nundah market.

For houses, the story in 2012 was considerably brighter. The median sale price for the year was $576,000, which was well above the Brisbane median of under $540,000. The annual report card shows our house median price increased by a staggering 9.1%, while many neighbouring suburbs had

declines in their values. Nundah can be proud that we still have million dollar homes with our highest sale price of $1,075,000 achieved in April for a stunning 4 bedroom home on the hill with a pool on a reasonably modest 607sqm (24p) block.

It looks like the current and future redevelopment of Nundah Village is boding well for residential property owners in and around our wonderful evolving suburb.Written by: Mark Roemermann, Local Real Estate Agent
