CIBO Espresso Opening

Hello, and welcome to Loving Nundah!Dedicated to what’s good in Nundah Village.FROM WHERE WE SIT Nundah is going through an extraordinary boom at the moment. I think most would agree that Nundah has a vibrant village atmosphere, with good food and a relaxed lifestyle.

But beyond all of that, we started Loving Nundah to explore the specifics of what is happening in this suburb and how that relates to those of us that live in and around here. It’s the community of Nundah that gives it real flavour.

We endeavour to keep you up-to-date with what’s going on around the village and to cover and comment with intelligent writing, good photography and clear, crisp design.

What we’re most excited about is what is happening day by day in the village, what’s worth exploring, what’s going on, who’s playing music, where to eat etc. The Loving Nundah facebook page and website will have up to date information, and reminders about local events.

Thanks for picking up the first issue of Loving Nundah. Have a great festive season and we’ll see you soon in Nundah.

CIRCA is Transforming Nundah NowBY FAR THE BIggEST BUZZ in Nundah now surrounds CIRCA Nundah Village, the $270 million urban renewal creating Brisbane’s most exciting new lifestyle hub.

CIRCA is transforming a 2.4 hectare CBD area with modern shopping and business centres and three Arkhefield-designed apartment towers linked by retail and dining plazas.

It is unfolding thanks to property Solutions, whose inspired treatment of James Street New Farm, SW1 South Bank and The Barracks at paddington has given Brisbane its most popular urban hubs.

Nundah’s now heading in the same direction. After much anticipation, the first elements in this remarkable project are being unveiled.

The precinct is coming alive on completion of CIRCA’s modern new offices, with crowds flocking to gO Health Club Nundah (open early Dec) for a thrilling new gym sensation. The $7.6 million club brings state-of-the-art facilities, a packed group fitness timetable and nightclub styling, focussing on entertainment and memorable experiences.

Early 2013 will see the official opening of CIRCA plaza stage one, where CIBO

Espresso is the first in an enticing array of cafes, restaurants and shops to line its landscaped lanes and courtyards. Echoing the flavour of Rome’s piazzas, CIBO Espresso will infuse the plaza with real Italian coffee bar culture.

With so much happening, no wonder apartment buyers are ‘loving Nundah’.

CIRCA Dos, the precinct’s second residential tower was recently released early, when more than 70% of CIRCA One units had sold out. Within just three months, over 50% of the second tower’s 102 apartments were taken up.

It’s a mighty sales result that signals surging confidence in Nundah, driven by its large-scale urban renewal and Airport Link, which now directly connects it to two of Queensland’s biggest employment hubs in under eight minutes.

“Buyers are really excited by the engaging village lifestyle emerging in what is now one

of Brisbane’s newest inner suburbs,” said CBRE Residential projects director paul Barratt. “CIRCA is drawing many owner-occupiers, plus investors impressed by the good yield offering and obvious appeal of the retail and dining plaza.”

CIRCA apartments, with great views, luxury finishes, a lap pool, ‘sky lounge’, secure parking and on-site management, are available from $345,000. Sky-terrace designs, with oversized balconies and built-in gardens, start from just $370,000. CIRCA One will finish around April 2013, followed by CIRCA Dos in early 2014.

For a real taste of the CIRCA Nundah Village lifestyle, visit the new sales and information centre in the CIRCA plaza. You’ll find a 3D scale model of the whole CIRCA precinct and even a replica kitchen displaying its sleek apartment finishes.

Visit circanundah.com.au to stay up to date with development progress.

Message from Tim NichollsIT IS WITH gREAT pLEASURE that I welcome you all to the first edition of Loving Nundah magazine. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this possible.

Loving Nundah is a celebration of our community spirit and showcases what this thriving suburb has to offer residents and visitors alike. It is also a great platform to help boost local business and create awareness of free community events and services.

Nundah is fast becoming one of Bris-bane’s most eclectic and vibrant shopping and dining hubs. This once industrial area is being rejuvenated into an urban metropolis, catering to all needs. Thanks to more afford-able public transport and the new AirportLink tunnel connecting north Brisbane to the CBD, Nundah is now even easier to get to.

While Nundah is home to an array of well-established locally-owned shops, the redevelopment of Nundah Village is attract-ing a number of exciting new businesses to the area. I encourage those in the Clayfield electorate to shop local this Christmas. Small business is the backbone of the Queensland economy and it is important that we, as a community, show our support.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a restful festive season, Member for Clayfield, Treasurer

Tim Nicholls

History abounds at the Royal English Hotel

Top – Then and Now, The Royal Hotel c. 1910, and November 2012.

Above – The Royal in 1951

THE ROYAL ENgLISH HOTEL or ‘the bottom pub’ is one of Nundah’s oldest historical landmarks. It sits on land that was previously part of the Nundah Railway Station Estate in german Station, which is now, of course, our beloved Nundah.

The hotel’s beginnings date back to 1885 when the lots of land it sits on, came up for auction for the first time. The first licencee, John Burel North, purchased the land and the hotel opened to the public in 1888.

The Royal English Hotel has been in the hands of numerous owners and licencees. Around 1950, the power family began its long association as licencee of the hotel and many long time residents of the area have fond memories of the local establishment that always put its customers first.

The stories within its walls are many. It is said that at the time of World War 1, a recruit-ing station for the Light Horse Brigade was situated in the backyard of the hotel. Rings and drinking troughs for the horses were part of the architecture out the front of the Royal.

The hotel has received many make-overs throughout the decades and has always been a strong display of architectural design.

With plans for new renovations to begin in March 2013, the Royal English Hotel will continue to be an iconic piece of local history that embodies the friendly and accommodat-ing com-munity that Nundah continues to be today.

Come and see us in the village!

Who are the Slightly Twisted guys? We are patrick, Nicholas and Diego. patrick is a former flight attendant and radiation thera-pist originally from Canada, now onto career number three.  Nichols is a former truck-driver turned hairdresser with a penchant for the twisted and bizarre.  Diego is a flight attendant originally from Argentina.  He is the so-called “not-so-silent-partner” in Slightly Twisted.

Where did the idea for Slightly Twisted come from? Opening a cafe was a long-term plan for patrick which was brought for-ward by a work accident and a dare from Nicholas. Hence Slightly Twisted Refreshment Lounge was born.

What’s do people find good about this place? We are Nundah’s friendliest hangout where prejudices and attitude need to be left at the door before entering.  We are neither a cafe nor a restaurant.  We are a refreshment lounge.  We offer a range of delicious treats both sweet and savoury to enjoy over a cup or two of Octane Coffee, or one of our popular twisted sodas while soak-ing up the atmosphere and listening to what is probably Brisbane’s most eclectic musical

playlist. This is a place where you can leave the mundane world behind for a while.

We hear you won an award recently, tell us more… Slightly Twisted was recently nomi-nated for and won the Quest Newspapers “Best New Business 2012” award.  The nomi-nation came as a real surprise, and winning was an even bigger (but pleasant) shock. What are your specialties?  We specialise in

serving fantastic sweets presented in our own twisted way.  We serve

up a pretty mean cup of coffee as well.  We also offer a range of savouries and platters to share over a bottle of wine or two with some friends (BYO wine and friends).  We can also arrange to supply

our platters and other items for functions and other small

to medium events. What else can you tell us about

Slightly Twisted?  We are constantly searching for new ways to make Slightly Twisted Refreshment Lounge the best place to be in the Village. From live music to trivia nights and other surprises yet to come.  pop in and say hello, this is a place you wouldn’t expect in Nundah.Visit 1/1180 Sandgate Road, Nundah Village.

Re-Loved StylePree has a fresh approach to fashion. With a glamorous array of frocks and finery cared for and ready to be loved all over again.

Who’s the brains behind Pree? I’m Christine. I’ve been in the fashion industry for 25+ years. 31/2 years ago I decided to do my own thing and pree was born.

Why Nundah? I came down to Nundah Village for a coffee. It had an eclectic vibe about it, and I could see the potential here.

What makes Pree different?pree has a concept that I strongly believe in; beautiful garments to be loved again by their new owners. You shouldn’t have to pay a fortune for quality pieces. It’s also great to know that we are doing our bit for the environment by recycling and looking fabulous at the same time.

What’s your vision for the boutique? I’m planning new things for the business in 2013 and with Nundah’s new found success, I’m excited about pree’s future.

ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY anticipated fitness centre openings of the year, go Health Clubs at Circa Nundah opened December 7 to the excitement of over 2000 Foundation Members.

After 18 months in the planning, the new two level ‘Mega Club’ finally kicked off with a weekend of festivities including a Friday evening Members celebration and Saturday’s grand Opening Day.

go Health Clubs Nundah has drawn a lot of community buzz with its unique entertainment-based approach to fitness, and now that it’s open one can tell working out will never be dull.

The variety and range of equipment is one

thing, but the most striking feature of the new go Nundah is the electric atmosphere that makes you want to get up and get moving. From the brightly coloured graphics and street art that adorns the walls, the concert style lighting, to the event sound system that really gets your blood pumping.

The entertainment theme is followed through to features such as a live DJ playing in peak times and the massive range of group fitness classes – initially featuring over 60 unique classes per week such as Warrior, Hipstar and Burlesque.

gO really differentiates itself from other gyms by focusing on being a ‘Club’ with great areas such as a stylish alfresco Members Area

cafe where members can socialise and enjoy a barista coffee and connect with the comings and going of the Circa Nundah precinct.

This club is certainly a one-of-a-kind. Not only will the unique architecture of the space have you intrigued, but the choice of different workout zones will also keep you motivated. Zones such as the gO girl Club, 3 group X Studios including the peloton cycle experience, the Hammerstrength Training Centre and Functional Zone will want you coming back for more!

The Nundah SpiritTHE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE DECEMBER/JANUARY 2013

THE NUNDAH NEIgHBOURHOOD CENTRE has been a part of the Nundah Community since first opening its doors over 20 years ago. The Neighbourhood Centre has gone through many transformations and experi-enced a lot of growth over the years with the most noteworthy being the introduction of a free community Legal Clinic in 1993 and the completion of brand new premises in 2011.

The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre serves the local community in many different ways, including the provision of groups and activities, family support programs, advocacy and community development. Today the Neighbourhood Centre is a vibrant commu-nity hub that works to meet the needs of the rapidly changing population of the Nundah

and its surrounds.A key factor to the success of the Neigh-

bourhood Centre has been the support of the many volunteers who give their time and expertise on a daily basis.

Today we have volunteers who assist in all areas of service delivery including adminis-trative support, teaching English and other language classes, providing technical support in the computer lab, tending our community garden, running the playgroup and cooking a community lunch each Friday.

The Neighbourhood Centre is always wel-coming of new visitors and we encourage anyone who has not been down to the Centre to drop by, say hello, have a cuppa and find out more about how you can get involved.

HELLO my name is Janetta. I decided to help out with the Neighbourhood Centre newsletter in my spare time. I believe in community and the necessary links to build community.

What was previously spare time is now shared with many other activities. Whether it is improving community contacts or strengthening relationships on a personal level, or setting goals and volunteering in the neighbourhood centre I have learnt a lot about myself.

New skills in study, business skills, people skills and much personal growth.

I don’t know about you, but I think all these things are a part of life’s experiences, and each of us can reflect on what we have achieved, or what we’d like to achieve in 2013.

Success can be everyone’s, and I think it is often best achieved small steps day-by-day. Making positive choices to change or enhance our lives.

Living each moment as something not to be taken for granted, but to make the most of every opportunity to be your best.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading all about

our centre. Have a wonderful Christmas.

if you would like to volunteer at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre please contact us to find out how you can get involved.

THE pLAN FOR NUNDAH has been revealed and published and came into effect on 15 October 2012.

KEVIN MILLER, founder and Managing Director of major property development and investment group, property Solutions, knows more about property in Nundah than most. Having lived in and around Nundah for most of his life, Kevin’s early interest in helping to manage his family’s properties led to him starting out on his career selling properties in Nundah as a young 21 year old.

He and his wife, Julie-Anne, who also grew up in the area, have refurbished several homes together and this experience has seen Kevin gradually move onto bigger and bigger projects.

Kevin’s passion for property development, which also resulted in the foundation of property Solutions in 1990, has seen him involved in several major, successful Brisbane developments including the popular James St precinct and Barracks at petrie Terrace which have transformed inner city Brisbane. As a result of his wide experience,

Kevin knows what it takes to succeed in property development in Brisbane, whether renovating or undertaking major commercial developments, and this hard won experience has helped property Solutions survive the tough economic conditions of the gFC where others have not been so well prepared.

Now Kevin is back where it all began applying his vast experience and love for Nundah, involved in several major Nundah commercial and residential developments.

Kevin identifies that Nundah is one of the last suburbs close to the CBD to be re-developed and, with many companies looking for office space close to (but not in) the CBD, the time is ripe to prepare Nundah for a range of future opportunities.

The recent completion of the Airport Link tunnel will bring extra traffic to Nundah and Kevin has been purchasing strategic property for 8 years to help Nundah realise these opportunities.
