All-Nighter Star WriterWords by Morgan Loy | Design by Eli Fosl | Photo by Josh Beal | Art by Etta MillerJackson Wolford (12)

It was 4 a.m. on winter break. Many students

were either in bed, having late night computer chats

with friends, or even up early for athletic training.

Jackson Wolford, on the other hand, was creating an

award-winning opera for the New Voice’s contest,

held by Actor’s Theatre.

“Around 4 a.m. I was just searching around on

Wikipedia. I was looking up this man who had a play

called The Threepenny Opera,” Wolford said.

At the same time, Wolford was looking up

information about Star Wars.

“I’m a bit of a nerd there. But they call Star Wars

a space opera and somehow in my mind, at 4 a.m.,

things got jumbled up and crossed together, and I

thought, ‘The Threepenny Space Opera!’”

Taking part of the plot from The Threepenny

Opera, along with a with a piano and keyboard, he

wrote a musical in the next 36 hours. He submitted

the musical at exactly midnight: the contest deadline.

Of the 400 people who entered the contest,

Wolford, an HSU magnet student, was one of nine

winners. The piece was also performed at YPAS’s

New Works festival. He hoped for the 30-minute

piece to one day be turned into a full length musical.

Having this unique accomplishment under his

belt, Wolford nonetheless planned a much different

future as a major in East Asian studies and Chinese

culture at Yale University. However, he hoped

theater would always be part of his life.

“I want to always be involved in theatre some

way, whether or not it’s how I’m making my living,”

he said.
