Taurus Riley and Much More at Easter FestFor those who like a good party – VG style – don’t

miss the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival, which promis-

es a weekend full of fun and surprises. The weekend-

long fete starts at 10am Saturday, April 4th with a

Fungi Fest and Food Fair at Spanish Town Market

Square.

The official launch, though, is at

7pm when The Hon Ralph T. O’Neal

Festiville opens featuring a great lineup

of entertainment including Leon and the

Hot Shots, DJ Ah Milli Soundz, Final Faze

and Showtime, among others. And don’t

miss special guest star Taurus Riley who

will bring his star power to the Festiville

stage that night. The Jamaican-

American reggae artist is going to pull

out all the stops to make this one great show.

Easter Sunday starts with a splash when the

popular Wet Fete gets underway at 11am at the St

Thomas Bay Jetty. An Easter basket of activities

includes a water trampoline, kayaks, paddle boards,

a wet t-shirt contest, RC boat races and much more!

The music will continue throughout the day with DJ

Smasher, Rated Mass, NJAR and the Venomous

Poizon Band from the USVI.

Get the kids out at 1pm for the Easter Egg Hunt

and Family Fun Day. Sponsored by the Valley Sound

Lions Club, it will be held at the Vigin Gorda Yacht

Harbour Grove. Hosted by John B, a Calypso

Competition is next, along with more DJ music and live

bands.

Get up early, or just stay up late, on

Monday April 6th for the Rise and Shine

Tramp which will begin at 4am accompa-

nied by Stylee Band from the USVI.

Camo Style, the tramp route takes revel-

ers from the HLSCC Virgin Gorda campus

to the Recreation Grounds. In a spectacle

of colorful costumes, festive floats and

pulsating music, the Grand Parade, start-

ing at 12pm promises to be a highlight.

Post parade, return to the Village and enjoy the

sounds of DJ Smasher, Prime Time, OMG, It’s A Secret

Band and Hardcore Band.

According to Festival Committee member, Jerrell

George, there are even “more surprises” in store at

this 48th annual event. Whether on Virgin Gorda,

Tortola, or further afield, the VG Easter Festival is the

place to be this weekend.

The 44th BVI Spring Regatta is all about having

lots of fun and sailing in the beautiful waters of the

BVI, so whether you are an avid racer or simply like to

take part in some of the activities, there really is

something for everyone.

Today, Thursday, 2nd April sees a lot of activity at

the Regatta Village at Nanny Cay as sailors start to

arrive for three days of racing in

the BVI Spring Regatta, which

starts on Friday, 3rd April and

continues through till Sunday,

5th April. During the day on

Thursday, don’t miss the VP

Bank Tortola Sloop Challenge

from 10am to 3:30pm and

Registration for the Spring

Regatta begins from noon till

6pm. Gather around the beach

bar for the Mount Gay Rum

Welcome Party from 4pm, but don’t miss the skip-

per’s meeting at 5:30pm – and then get back into the

groove to the live sounds of Final Faze who will take

the stage at 8pm.

Friday is Racing Day 1 and expect to see a magnif-

icent fleet of yachts from Europe, North America and

the Caribbean. Out on the water over the three days

of racing, there are the mouth-watering hi-tech

yachts from America and Germany, competing

Connecticut USA and Black Pearl from Hamburg,

Germany are both well-sailed, carbon fiber, hi-speed

flyers, and on the BVI Spring Regatta course for the

first time. Multiple World Champion and Olympic sil-

ver medalist, Steve Benjamin will be at the helm of

Spookie and America’s Cup tactician, Marc Lagesse is

amongst the professional crew

on Black Pearl, which will make

for some great racing action.

After each day of racing, the

Regatta Village at Nanny Cay

becomes party central, so make

sure you catch all of the enter-

tainment lined up over the three

days (See Event Schedule onPage 4) and includes live music

by Hudson and the Hoo Doo

Cats, the ever popular

Bastanaak Swimwear Show and live music by Quito

and the Edge. Sunday is the last day of racing, and

starts with an Easter Sunrise Service, before an

Easter Egg Hunt for the kids at 11am and a perform-

ance from the sky-defying Moko Jumbies at 4pm. The

Awards Ceremony begins at 5:30pm and the event is

brought to a close for yet another exciting year with

Chef Al and the Hot Sauce Band at 8pm who are sure

to have you and your crew dancing the night away.

With the Softball team returning to the Territoryafter competing in the English Speaking CaribbeanCountries Softball Championships in the Bahamasand claiming a bronze medal, and the Football teamreturned from Dominica after playing both legs of theFIFA 2018 World Cup qualifying matches there –where they lost 3-2 and played to a 0-0 tie onSunday – the regional competition cycle continuesthis weekend in St. Kitts at the Carifta Games Trackand field Championships and next week in Barbados,with the Carifta Games Swimming Championships.

Swimming made history last year when ElinahPhillip earned the Territory’s first medals in the com-petition – including a 50m Butterfly gold – as shecompleted a four for four race medal haul with addi-tional silver and bronze medals in Aruba. Swimmingdebuted in the championships in 2012.

Coupled with four bronze medals in track andfield, it was the first time two sports had pulled off thefeat in regional competitions. They will go at it againstarting on Friday when the 44th edition of the trackand field event kicks off in St. Kitts-Nevis and ends onMonday.

Some 13 athletes in what has to be consideredone of the strongest – if not the strongest teams everassembled for Carifta – which doesn’t include any U18Male athletes for the first time in years, its lies in theU20 division with 11 athletes, eight of them female.Additionally, 11 of the 13 athletes have recorded a per-sonal best performance this season with eight of themarks being a national record.

Four athletes who have competed at the CariftaGames before – two of them with individual medals –will be debuting in five different events. Moses, a 2013U17 Girls 400m silver medalist who missed the eventlast year because of injuries, will contest the 800m.Warner – who won U17 Girls 800m bronze medals in2012 and 2013 but missed the podium last year – willsee action in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles alongwith Jonel Lacey, who ran the 100, 200m and 300mHurdles before, but wasn’t on last year’s squad. It alsomarks the first time that the BVI will field female400m Hurdlers.

Arianna Hayde, at 15 the team’s youngest memberwho established a National Jr. Record in making herHeptathlon debut last year, will compete in the LongJump and Javelin Throw.

younger siblings, he has no musical talent. His fatherwould like the company to be run by an entertainerand not a businessman even though Andre works atand knows all aspects of Empire business. Andre maynot have the musical talents, but his brilliance isequally matched by his ambition to secure his placeat the top.

While Academy-Award nominee Terrence Howarddelivers a solid performance as Lucious, it is Taraji P.Henson that delivers the standout performance asCookie Lyon. Her presence is captivating every timeshe’s on screen. In the very first episode we seeCookie leaving prison after doing 17 years. In those 17years she has missed her sons growing up, Luciousdivorced her when she was still in prison and thesmall company she contributed to financially hasamassed into an “Empire” beyond anything she couldhave dreamt of and now she’s back and wants herpiece of the pie.

Empire is one of those rare shows that can screamin your face and get away with it. Producers LeeDaniels and Danny Strong are credited in this, butwithout terrific performances from the majority of theensemble, none of it would work. For now, this serieslooks like a winner, but can it keep its ferocious paceup before it runs out of steam? We’ll have to keepwatching to see what happens next.

EmpireEmpire is a modern day King Lear story of a pow-

erful music mogul named Lucious Lyon, (TerrenceHoward) and his desire to find an heir to his companyafter recent news that he has ALS. The series whichhas a heavy hip-hop and Shakespearean influencearises from the story of King Lear who, before divid-ing up his kingdom, put his three daughters through aseries of tests. Well, in this case, Lyon’s three sons –Hakeem, Jamal, and Andre, replaces those daughters.Their father literally sits them down and tells them toprove their worth if they want to have a shot at takingthe throne.

Each brother has his own strength and weaknessin terms of having what it takes to become a leader.Lucious’ youngest son Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) is hisfavorite, though perhaps not the wisest of the threeboys. Hakeem screams laziness, but is also a talentedaspiring rapper who could do great things if he justhad the proper motivation. He does a solid job of por-traying the dysfunctional child, as his mother andfather fight for control of his future.

The middle child Jamal (Jussie Smollett) is per-haps the most interesting of the bunch and in myopinion the most talented. Jamal is a singer-song-writer and is destined to take Empire to new heights,but Luciou’s biggest hang up with Jamal is that he isgay. Throughout the season, we are shown flash-backs of Jamal as a young boy trying on his mother’sshoes and clothes, only to have his father embar-rassingly drag his outside and throw him in agarbage can. Jamal has actively been seeking hisfather’s love and acceptance his entire life andhopes that if he can show him he can run Empirethen he can look at him as his son and not look downon him because his is gay.

Andre (Trai Byers) is the eldest and most publiclyrespected. He is highly educated, but unlike his two

your initial hi’s, ask a question that shows that you are

interested in getting to know the person.

6. Sell yourself well. I know we all want to believe

that our dazzling smile and the sea in the background

is enough to capture our prince or princess charming,

but remember you want someone who is not superfi-

cial – so find unique ways of saying who you are and

why you have the potential to be the guy or girl of their

dreams.

7. Ignore the naysayers. Yes, some of your friends

will scoff at you and tell you they will never try online

dating, but that’s okay. I’m sure there are many things

they do, that you yourself wouldn’t dream of. Nothing

is wrong with being modern and creative.

It’s your life and you are responsible for your own

happiness. Even if you don’t meet the love of your life,

perhaps you will make some great friends. It’s nice

that you have an open mind and you are willing to try

new things. Manage your expectations - like every-

nothing to lose and the possibility of much to gain.

So you have searched high and low in Tortola and

you are still not finding that special someone; you

have done all the things your friends suggested –

smiling more, doing your best to appear warm and

approachable, lost that 5 pounds and been more

socially active and yet, to your complete and utter

frustration, nothing. So as a last resort, you have

decided to navigate the uncertain waters of internet

dating. Here are some simple reminders to make the

process easier:

1. Be genuine. Don’t try to portray yourself as some-

one that you are not because when you meet the per-

son, they will see who you truly are. You want some-

one to be attracted to the real you. Use current photos

and give factual information.

2. Be careful with your personal information. Do not

put your telephone number or full name initially. Only

share that information when you feel comfortable

with the person.

3. Be as selective as you would be in person.

Desperation is not cute. Not everyone is the one for

that’s not what you want, don’t settle. Look for some-
