Worried About Saying Goodbye? Most babies from eight months on take time to adjust to their new
surroundings. Separation wobbles are completely normal. However, your child
will have lots of time to settle in at Ludlow Babies and, with their own friendly
key person, handover time will soon become familiar and easier. We can help you
develop a “goodbye” routine and even create a special box full of your child’s
favourite things, from toys and books to comforters to ease any separation
concerns.

The Baby Room (0-2 Years)
The Baby Room is a spacious environment where young
children are nurtured and provided with a safe, calm and
responsive atmosphere to develop positive attachments
and form their first relationships with other adults and
peers.
Our babies are provided with a wide variety of sensory
activities to stimulate them and encourage their
curiosity and exploratory impulses. We take the babies
outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and to introduce them
to the world around them, and we go on short outings to
the park to look at the natural environment, which feeds their inquisitive minds.
We provide messy and textured play activities to
introduce our babies to new experiences which use
all their senses. This could include; play dough,
shaving foam, jelly, dry rice, wet pasta, gloop, paint,
sand and water play. We offer simple problem
solving and schematic activities to encourage babies
to explore and learn through repetition and positive
experiences. Our babies are encouraged to learn
through lots of praise, and the activities provided
allow for this to happen at all times.
The physical area is made up of soft play cushions, a
tent, tunnels and a mirror triangle for the babies to
develop their gross motor skills. They have the
opportunity to play simple games such as pee-po and
make early connections with cause and effect, as
well as beginning to form early friendships with
peers.
Ludlow Babies Page 6
The babies follow their home routines as much as
possible in this room and have allocated bedding
which is stored in named, zip lock pockets for when
they need to sleep. We have cots for the very young
babies to sleep in, the older babies have beds made
up in the cosy area for them to rest or sleep, as and
when they need to. They also have personal baskets
which contain some of their belongings that they
can access throughout the day with the support of
the staff members in the room.
Regular snacks and drinks are provided for the babies during the morning and
afternoon sessions, as well as individual children having their bottles as per
their home routine. Care giving routines such as nappy changes and bottle
feeding are carried out by the child’s key worker. This develops key
attachments which are vital for personal, social and emotional development.
Simple activities are planned for individual
development, as well as for the group as a whole.
An individual learning journal is maintained for
each child by their key worker, and their
individual targets and progress will be recorded
through this. All of the babies in this room are
provided with well planned activities that are
tailored to their abilities and individual needs,
which enables them to grow in confidence and feel
secure in the environment.

What you need to bring when your child starts Nursery
Your child will sometimes get paint, food or glue on their clothes, so please send
them in practical clothes, NOT best clothes.
We ask if you could provide the following:
1. A spare set of clothes because we play with water, paint, etc
2. Nappies, Nappy Cream and Wipes
3. A coat – we will be going for walks out in the environment
4. Comforter – Teddy, dummy etc.
5. Beaker/Bottle
6. Milk powder/formula
7. In warm weather a sun hat and sun cream.
If your child happens to borrow some of our clothing, please ensure it is
returned to the setting promptly
Your Child’s Health
Children who are ill cannot attend nursery. Please do not bring your child if
they are suffering from any infectious diseases, for example:
* Sickness/Diarrhoea
* Conjunctivitis
* Chickenpox
* Measles
* Scabies
* Tonsillitis
Your doctor will advise when your child is no longer infectious. If you have any
doubts whatsoever about whether your child should come to nursery, please ring
us before you leave home so that our staff can advise you.
If your child is on prescribed antibiotics
We always ask you to keep your child off nursery for the first 48 hours of the
antibiotic course, after that we will be more than happy to administer the
medicine with written consent from you.
Ludlow Babies Page 8
If your child has had sickness or diarrhoea
We always ask that you wait 48 hours since the last bout of sickness or
diarrhoea before you bring your child back to nursery.
If your child becomes ill at nursery
We will contact you as soon as possible and ask you to come and pick them up.
If we cannot get hold of you, we will contact another emergency number that
you have given us permission to contact.
Medication
If your child has been prescribed medicine by the doctor that needs to be
taken during the nursery day, you will be asked to sign a medicine form. This
form authorises staff to administer medicine and states the dosage and time
given. All medicine will be stored in accordance with instructions of the
prescribed medicine. At all times, it will be kept out of reach of the children.
Accidents or injuries
Unfortunately, accidents and injuries do sometimes occur at home and at
nursery. All accidents and injuries are recorded on the appropriate form and
signed by two nursery workers and the parent/carer. We record the date, time,
what happened, what injury occurred and what first aid treatment was needed
if any. If an injury causes concern, then the child will be taken to hospital and
parent/carer contacted. The child’s personal details will be taken with them.

Snack and Meal times
We believe healthy eating is extremely important in the development of young
children. We recognise that children should be able to enjoy food as well as
learn good behaviour for the future. We aim to provide nutritious snacks which
are both appealing and appetising to all of the children.
For bottle fed children you will need to provide ready to use cartons or a box of
formula, clearly labelled with your child’s name, which we will prepare with
boiled water when required. Weaning takes place alongside parent’s wishes and
current recommendations.
We are able to offer hot lunches from St.Laurence’s School during term time
for no cost to you. You are able to bring your own meals if you prefer. We will
have a box for each child in the fridge to place their items in. Meals and milk
are able to be heated in our microwave

Key person
You will often hear the phrase ‘key person’ in and around the nursery. Whilst the
children are cared for by all staff in the room, it is important that we meet the
individual needs of the children and that you have a specific person that you can
approach to share information with about your child. Your child will be assigned
a key person at your settling in sessions. They will share information with you
about your child and ensure that their individual needs are being met. They will
be responsible for planning activities for your child to help them achieve their
next steps. They will observe their key children, and make assessments on their
progress which you can view in their learning journal.
The role and purpose of the key person system is to:
Ensure that all children receive consistent and continual care in all
aspects of their development.
Provide an environment where children can feel safe and secure and also
gain confidence in themselves and others.
Use the early year’s outcomes guidance for support, taking into account
each child’s abilities and individual needs when planning for their
activities.
Ensure that the health and well-being of the child is considered with
upmost importance, and that individual caring and development needs are
met.
Ensure that parents are kept informed of all aspects of their child’s care
and development.
Early year’s foundation stage
The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to
support their healthy development.
Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:
Communication and language;
Physical development; and
Personal, social and emotional development.
These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development
and future learning.
Ludlow Babies Page 12
Developing a positive partnership
Within our nursery, a good working relationship with parents is paramount to
the education and development of every child. We aim to make your child’s early
years experiences as positive as possible. In order to achieve this, it is
important that we communicate effectively with you and build positive
relationships between you and the nursery team. We welcome a parent’s
guidance and knowledge because they know their child best.
We would like parents to know they are always welcome in the nursery to
discuss any concerns they may have. Arrangements can be made for private
discussion at a mutually convenient time. If any member of staff has any
concerns about your child in our care they will always meet with the parent
privately to discuss any action that may need to be taken.
Policies and procedures
We believe a successful nursery is a combination of skilled and caring people
with efficient and effective policies in place. Our policies and procedures are
fundamental to ensuring we maintain the highest standard at all times. Our
policies and procedures is a robust, working document that govern the way we
operate our nursery and are openly available for parents and Ofsted to view.
Policies and procedures are in the heart of everything we do and for that reason
they are regularly reviewed, updated and maintained. If you wish to see the full
policies and procedures they are available to view or we can make you a copy
upon request.

Important Information
Bank Holidays and other charges
When the nursery is closed for bank holidays you will not be charged. You will
still be required to pay the nursery fees if your child does not attend for any
reason, such as holiday or sickness’. We offer 1 week with no charge that can
be used when absent for holidays etc. We require 4 weeks’ notice in writing if
you wish to terminate your contract.
Closure Dates
Ludlow Babies will be open weekly, Monday to Friday, with the exceptions of
statutory bank holidays and Christmas.
Payment
You will be billed monthly and payment is preferred by online banking.
Bad Weather
In the event of a heavy snowfall Ludlow Babies will make a decision whether it
will be opened or closed. If it does close an announcement will be made on the
Ludlow Babies Face book page. If you are unsure please ring the nursery before
leaving your home to check.
Absences
A member of staff must be informed as soon as possible of any absences, so
please ring to inform us.
Collection of children
It is important that the staff know who is collecting your child from the
setting. If any person, other than the parent it’s to collect your child, then a
brief description of this person should be given to the manager. We will not
allow under any circumstances for your child to leave the nursery with any
unknown person and someone who is not named on the registration/contract
form.
Late collection
We appreciate unforeseen circumstances can make you late to pick up your child
from the setting. This we fully understand, all that we ask is that the
parent/career telephones the nursery as soon as possible to let us know, then
we can make comfortable arrangements for the child.
