Family Advent Event on Gaudete Sunday Pick Up an Ornament to Decorate!
Gaudete Sunday, always the third Sunday of Advent, is the weekend set aside to rejoice in the joy and anticipation of Christmas. This year that is December 11/12. A clear plastic ornament was
given to families at Highland Catholic School and Faith Formation classes. Ornaments are available in the Gath-ering Area for families with children if you are not a part of either of these groups. Decorate the ornament as a family, then bring it to Mass the weekend of December 11/12 and decorate the trees in the Gathering Area. Coffee and donuts are available after Masses this week-end. Please join this family activity in joy and anticipa-tion of Christmas!

Advent begins the Church’s liturgical year. Advent is the season encompassing the four Sundays leading up to the cele-bration of Christmas. It is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth at Christmas. Advent prayer as a time of waiting can help prepare you for the birth of Jesus Christ.

Today’s Readings
Understanding the Mass
The Gloria The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the penitential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penitential rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving action in the universe. The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament canticles. It begins with the song of the angels at the announcement of the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:14), a heav-enly burst of praise for God’s loving action in the world. But in the Gloria, the song goes on, leaping, as it were, from height to height, with every kind of praise, blessing, adora-tion, glory, and thanksgiving. We begin by thanking and praising God the Father; then we turn our gaze to Christ, the Lamb of God. The paschal mystery of Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection is found here, at the heart of this pray-er, which descends to the depths with Christ, but then rises with him to the heavens, where he is seated at the Father’s right hand. The Gloria ends with a series of acclamations to Christ, emphasizing over and over that he “alone” is the Holy One, the Lord, the Most High, truly God, with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Our prayer of praise ends where it began, in the “glory of God the Father.” The Gloria, with its arc lead-ing us from the glory of God to the suffering of Christ and again to glory, is the pattern of the Mass itself. Watchful Confidence We the Church enter into Advent and the new liturgical year with a call for a watchful confidence. Our readings were originally addressed to communities undergoing great loss and confusion. Jeremiah speaks confidently of God fulfilling the ancient promises to Israel, even during a time of foreign invasion. Paul speaks of God leading the Church into holiness, while the community longs for the coming of Jesus. In the Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus speaks of powerful signs and of great confusion to come, but emphasizes that we may look forward knowing that God brings not cause for despair, but hope. We celebrate Advent to remind each other of God’s faithfulness. We are to be watchful, to see how God is stirring up our world. God disturbs both our pride and our complacen-cy, and brings us healing and justice. We prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, confident that God indeed fulfills all these divine promises. Each chapter ends with exercises and questions to help you take the next step – from theory to application in your praying life.
Zoning Update
It Makes a Difference When We Work Together On behalf of the parish and other religious institutions, I wanted to thank you for responding to the Zoning Commissions proposed changes in Religious Accesso-ry Use. On Friday, Oct. 29 the commission held an open format meeting to hear from people in person and comment on all the emails and phone calls you made. I was informed that next to the Ford site devel-opment, they received more responses on this than any other proposed change. I know many of you helped with that endeavor. Three major revisions have come about that give us hope that this is on a better and less restrictive course.
First, the prohibition on future developments and building projects was dropped in its entirety and will not be part of the commission’s final recommendation.
Second, the definition of accessory use has been narrowed while primary use has been broadened to be very encompassing of the many ministries and activities Houses of Worship perform. Things like religious education, counseling and homeless shelters are no longer considered accessory uses but fall under primary use.
Lastly, the 1,000 sq ft requirement for permitting has been dropped. All in all, we have seen reform on every issue we had concerns about and it is because of your support and comments. We concluded with a follow up meeting on November 16 with the Zoning Commission and 75 Houses of Worship. As a result, we believe we have found language and regulations that satisfy the lawsuit that prompted the change without infringing on the rights of Houses of Worship. This document should be available the first week of December and we will relay it accordingly.

Discussion on Assisted Suicide Monday, December 13 at 7:00 pm at Nativity, St. Paul
Attend a discussion on assisted suicide with Lumen Christi parishioner Lynn Varco from the Minnesota Catholic Confer-ence. There will be a screening of the short film “Fatal Flaws” about the harms of euthanasia and assisted suicide followed by a brief discussion of efforts to support compas-sionate alternatives to the legalization of assisted suicide in Minnesota and how parishioners can take action on this issue via MCC’s partner organization EthicalCareMN.org.
