GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Brother Knights,

This last month has certainly been an eventful one in the life of the Church. Our Holy Father has decided to pass the mantel of office onto the next generation, in doing so he has demonstrated his complete selflessness and his desire only for the good of Christ's Church on earth. It should not be surprising to us that one who has been referred to as "the teaching Pope" should leave office in a manner which is a lesson to us all - namely that we are here on earth to serve our fellow man for the greater glory of God and not for our own. The timing of his decision during this season of reflection is to my mind not un-coincidental given the challenges of our world today.

The Cardinal Electors now begin the process of choosing the next Supreme Pontiff, Christ's Vicar on earth and the Servant of the Servants of God. They are already under immense pressure from the secular media to influence the process in the hope that somehow they could possibly elect someone who will bring the Church into line with today's secular way of thinking. Thankfully, the media is completely misguided in their attempts, as we, as faithful Catholics, know that it is the Holy Spirit and not public opinion who will direct the choice of our new Holy Father.

This coming month also sees the celebration of our annual corporate Communion with Bishop Farrell on March 9 at 10 am in the Cathedral. I urge everyone to attend this important event to both show our support for the Bishop and also to benefit from his wisdom in this difficult time.

I also ask that you keep the College of Cardinals in your prayers so that they can be free from the distractions of our modern world to be able to hear the will of the Holy Spirit as they choose our new shepherd.

We are Called to be the Light of Christ

Vivat Jesus Gerry

GO AND PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL My Dear Brothers in Christ…

What a great privilege it is for me to be associated with a group of men as fine as the group here in this council. I cannot express in words my thanks for the support, encouragement and prayers you have given both Sherry and me. This whole parish of All Saints has blessed both of us, but there has been a special blessing coming from the men of this council and their wives. I pray that God will give me the grace to be the Deacon you deserve. I have truly never known a group of people who so lived the Gospel message as the men of Council 13520 and their wives. When I am given the privilege of instructing you at the end of Mass to… “Go and proclaim the Gospel” I know that I am – as they say – “preaching to the choir.”

Also, thank you for the generous gift. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones as we strive to continue our walk with Christ.

MONTHLY RECOGNITIONS Knight of the Month

The Knight of the Month is Richard Nelson. Richard has demonstrated his love of God and the Church by accepting the call to serve as Permanent Deacon. As we all know from the wonderful talks he gives at each of our business meetings, Richard is going to be a great addition to the Parish Clergy and we look forward to his continued service to both our parish and Council.

Family of the Month

As Richard himself said at the outset of his journey this was not simply a calling that he had to answer but also one that his family needed to journey with him. Without the support of his wife Sherry and the rest of the Nelson family, this is not something he would have succeeded in doing. Therefore it is only right that our family of the month is the Nelson Family.

Pro-Life ANNUAL BISHOP’S PRO-LIFE DINNER LESS THAN 40 DAYS AWAY As I write this article, we are 40 days away from the Annual Bishop’s Pro-Life Dinner. (Isn’t it interesting how the number 40 keeps coming up this year?) This is the main fund raising event for the Catholic Pro-Life Committee. At this point, I have seven tickets left if you want to sit at the same tables as other Knights and All Saints Parishioners. At our next meeting and at our next Pancake Breakfast, I will have raffle tickets for this year’s drawing. The prizes this year are quite nice. First prizeis a $15,000 MasterCard gift card. Second prize is a Carnival cruise for two and third is a

Kindle Fire. (I’m sure Carnival will have ironed out their problems by then…)

Thoughts on the Feminist Movement

Early women's rights advocates were pro-life. Susan B. Anthony was a radical feminist in her day. She said, "I deplore the horrible crime of child murder...no matter what the motive..." Another leading feminist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, commented, "When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property, to be disposed of as we wish." Sadly, a new breed of feminists followed, such as Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, who advocated abortion as a means of sexual freedom. Eugenics were also a primary

motive, as Sanger referred to African Americans, among other things, as "human weeds." There are feminists today who still uphold the pro-life position. For example, Feminists for Life is a very active group, who refer to abortion as "the ultimate exploitation of women." Article from www.pro-lifearticles.com

Please contact Jim or Sharon DeSmet at 972-931-8405 or [email protected] with any questions or to sign up for Pro-Life events. -article by Jim and Sharon DeSmet, Pro-Life Program Couple (972-931-8405), stock photos

PRO-LIFE TIP OF THE MONTH March 2013

Thoughts about praying outside of an

abortion center…

The first time I was invited to pray outside of an abortion facility, I didn't

really want to do it.

Like me, many people's initial reaction is to find the most heartfelt and sincere excuse. However, when we overcome

that first natural hesitation and just do it, we don't regret it. And it's never

what we thought it would be like.

When you pray outside an abortion facility at a special event like a 40 Days for Life vigil or just a normal Saturday

Rosary, you may affect women going into the building ... the people driving by ...

the people who work there.

But there's one other person your prayer experience can affect -- YOU!

COUNCIL PREPARES MEALS On Thursday, February 28, Lumen Christi Council hosted lunch at the Fisher House - the “home away from home” for patients and families of patients receiving medical care at the local VA medical center.

The photos accompanying this article depict all of the volunteers from the council family who assisted at the Fisher House. Event Chairman Ed Munno did most of the prep work and food purchase prior to the event. He even solicited his daughter, Amy Helming to pitch in with a dessert. The lunch consisted of seashell pasta in Ed’s specialty, red sauce with Italian sausage and short ribs. Salad, bread, desserts and drinks augmented the main dish. Barb Meyer made cupcakes to complement Amy’s fudge cake. There were 18 or so residents and staff members at the facility in time for lunch. Other residents planned to eat after their time at the hospital. There was plenty of food for all! We received many thanks from the well-fed group who ate while we were there. They also highly complimented our chef.

Lumen Christi Council will again provide lunch at Fisher House in May. Volunteers are needed to handle pre-event food purchase and prep work. On the day of the event – Thursday, May 30 – eight to ten knights, spouses or family members old enough to assist in the kitchen, are needed for final preparation and serving of the meal. Cleanup of the facility is also part of the service. If you have additional questions or can volunteer for this event contact Community Program Director Ed Munno (972-788-9174 / [email protected]).

Youth LUMEN CHRISTI SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS The Lumen Christi Council is now accepting applications for a scholarship from eligible members of All Saints Catholic Church. The scholarship is for an undergraduate education in a University, College, Junior College, Technical School, Business School or Seminary. The scholarship will be awarded primarily on scholastic performance, community service, and established need (as set forth in a personal statement). A committee of impartial Knights will determine who will

be awarded the scholarship. To apply, interested applicants must fill out an application and return it to the address indicated. The application form can be obtained from the All Saints Web site (www.allsaintsdallas.org), click on “Scholarship application” located below the Knights of Columbus emblem. LENTEN SUPPERS OFFERED AGAIN

Our annual Lenten Dinners kicked off on February 15 with baked fish over rice, queso, pico de gallo, and caldo de pescado. The preparation for the meal was intermingled with the prep for the pancake breakfast on Sunday. Since Stan Tax, the chief chef for both meals, was absent while recovering from neck surgery, the coordination of all of this was somewhat of a challenge. However, we managed with help from Larry and Stephanie Milliken, John and Barb Meyer, Jim and Shirley Sammons, Al Steindorf, John Leffingwell, Joel Damron, Ed Munno, Doyle Kitchen, Jack Ayers and a few other Knights. Then the Our Lady of Grace Circle from the All Saints Women’s Organization came in to help serve the meal and clean up. We served 81 paying customers, and everyone went away well fed. We received many compliments on the effort. Most of the leftovers were reheated and shared with the UTD students on Sunday night. On February 22, a small group of Knights supported Youth Ministry and Religious Education as they served their traditional stone soup. On March 1, our group – mostly the same people with Stan Tax recovering from yet another surgery - prepared Alfredo sauce with shrimp and imitation crabmeat over noodles. Sister Mary Paul and a group of eager RCIA candidates and catechumens assisted with hall set up, final preparation, serving and clean up. On March 8, the Men’s Club will be serving their famous baked fish with shrimp and mushroom mornay sauce. On March 15, the Multi-Cultural

Ministry will serve fish soup and fried rice with veggies and shrimp. On March 22, we wrap up this year’s meal service as we work with the Ministry for Persons with Disabilities and Caregivers to serve shrimp étouffée over rice, and caldo de pescado. If you can help with prep work prior to and/or during the March 22 meal, please contact John Meyer. Meals will be served from 5:30 PM until 6:45 PM on each Friday followed by Stations of the Cross at 7 PM. Please bring your families to all of these meals to patronize the various organizations and enjoy some fellowship with your brother Knights and fellow parishioners.

GOLDEN SAINTS LUNCHEON

On February 20, the Knights and the ladies from the Infant of Prague Circle served a meal prepared by our caterer Greg Draxler. We served salad, entree and dessert for about 75 All Saints Seniors. Those involved were Jack Ayers, John and Barb Meyer, Jim and Shirley Sammons, Huey Prater, Joel Damron, Bernie Crotty, Larry Brennan, Larry Milliken and Al Steindorf. Thank You for all of your help. I want to thank these Knights and ladies for helping this month’s luncheon go so smoothly. We do it again with the Ladies from the Lady of Snows Circle on March 20. Come join us!

Council FEBRUARY PANCAKE BREAKFAST With our “fearless leader”, Stan Tax laid up with some medical issues, the

“usual suspects” - and then some - teamed up to pull off a successful February pancake breakfast. The big hit from the January pancake breakfast - Baked Apple French Toast - made an appetizing return to the Sunday menu along with our fruit infused pancakes, thick cut bacon, two varieties of scrambled eggs, home fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy and our usual fruit bowl. The coffee and donuts team provided their usual beverage service and the All Saints Jazz Band entertained everyone following the 9:15 am and 11:00 am Masses.

Reports state that 195 people were served and there were no complaints about the food or the service; everyone from the younger generation to our more tenured folks had a great time. Stan Tax did make a guest appearance in a “supervisory” role and it was good to see him and a “few other faces from the past” gracing our Fellowship Hall

event.

Thanks to everyone for your help – and you know who you are! It means a lot to the council to have your support, especially with some people “on the shelf” for a week or so.

Church UPCOMING CHURCH EVENTS As written by Archbishop Lori this past month, Charity grows us as a fraternity as well as a community. As Knights, and members of All Saints Catholic Community, many times we see people lose Hope. Lent is the time for Charity, for Charity is Love! When people are poor in spirit or in health, weighted down with financial burdens, unemployment, family problems; then it is time for us to share our Charity. Show we care. Share our faith and charity to build up their hope. Rosary for Grace Snuggs On Tuesday March 5 at 7:00 pm we have that chance to pray together for Grace Snuggs. Our prayers, charity, unity and fraternity will help Jeff and Grace continue their hope, their faith and their charity during this extremely stressful time. As Knights we are looked upon as the leading men of our community at All Saints, our example is noticed. Please bring your family.

Holy Hour for Vocations Due to the parish wide penance service, First Thursday Adoration and Prayers for Vocations is cancelled this month. In recent months, this service was not well attended and I hope that next month you will make an extra effort to come pray for those living in a consecrated life, those in seminaries and all those in discernment. Remember, we support seven young men financially – they also need your prayers.

Marian Stations This Friday, March 8 and on Good Friday, March 29 we will be doing the Marian Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered. Please plan to attend these evening services to support the council, your brothers, and your parish; and to see a very moving Stations of the Cross. Last year we had over 400 people attend the Good Friday Stations. Sandy Marshall will be doing the role of Mary on March 8 and Mary Davis will do the role of Mary on March 29. Bring friends and family.

Corporate Communion at the Cathedral Knights and Ladies, please reserve Saturday March 9 on your calendars for our annual Diocesan wide Corporate Communion at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in downtown Dallas - 2215 Ross Ave Dallas, TX 75201. The mass will begin at 10:00 am, please note the change from previously published times. After mass, we will meet at El Fenix for lunch. Please remember to contact John Doyle so he can compile a full list of attendees for lunch.

Make Christ a larger focus in your life this Lent. If you have not participated in a Rosary for Life at an abortion clinic, do it this Lent. If you have not made Thursday prayers for Vocations, commit to attend any Thursday. Participate in fellowship, so many people appreciate it. The assembly that begins in the church continues with fellowship.

Membership JERRY CAYCE BECOMES A “KC” Jerry Cayce becomes the newest member of Lumen Christi Council 13520. On Wednesday, February 27 at Prince of Peace he was one of nine men exemplified in the First Degree. Mike Greene, Chris Diaz and Larry Milliken were on hand to witness the event and congratulate our new brother. Please welcome Jerry to our Council and his wife Laura (one of the Our Lady of Grace Circles members pictured on page 6) to the Ladies Auxiliary. Bishop Farrell has urged every Catholic man to become an active member of the Knights of Columbus. The Bishop reemphasizes the long standing claim that “the Knight of Columbus is the Strong Right Arm of the Church”. Our service program, charitable activities and volunteer service to the Church, from the parish to the Vatican, are models of Jesus’ call to serve not to be served.

There can be no end to the need for more Catholic men to become active members of the Knights of Columbus. For it is not about numbers, it is about family, community, parish, priest, pro-life, our youth, and scholarship. It is about charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism. It is the peace of mind realized when men with like passions, drive and spiritualty come together in the name of the Lord to accomplish great things. To fulfill Bishop Farrell’s hope that every Catholic man be a member of the Knights of Columbus requires action by all Knights. The benefits of membership are overwhelming. Start today by inviting just one Catholic man to consider membership. Upcoming First Degree exemplification ceremony dates are listed below for your benefit.

Upcoming First Degree Ceremonies March 9 @ St Anthony Council 12300, Wylie,TX March 18 @ St Elizabeth Ann Seton Council 7850, Plano, TX March 28 @ St Joseph's Council 8954, Richardson, TX April 4 @ Our Lady of Angels Council 13044, Allen, TX April 13 @ St Jude Council 11293, Allen, TX April 24 @ Prince of Peace Council 11716, Plano, TX

"Council Photographer" Jerry Cayce now a new Knight!

As many of you know, Grace Snuggs, wife of brother Knight Jeff Snuggs, is a young mother of two children who has just found out she has pancreatic cancer and given a

year to live. Her son Michael is 4 and has Down Syndrome and her daughter Ana is 6 months old.

With the assistance of many, we have written a prayer asking for the Intercession of Venerable Fr. Michael J.

McGivney to pray with us that if it be Gods will, Grace will be cured of the cancer.

Please join us in reciting the following prayer daily until Grace is cured or is called home to be with our Lord.

Prayer for Healing For Grace Snuggs

O venerable, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, faithful servant of the Church,

we come before you with a solemn heart and in need of your intercession.

Pray with us to the Lord, our God, for our friend,

Grace Snuggs that she will soon be delivered from the cancer that has come into her life.

We believe that no healing is too hard for the Lord,

if it is in accordance with His will.

We promise you, O venerable Michael J. McGivney, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and

to always honor you as our special and powerful patron.

Liaison Reports LADIES AUXILIARY REPORT

February was a very busy month for all of the Lady Knights. Many were involved in the reception for Deacon Richard, and more helped with the World Marriage Day Celebration. Several of the ladies got together in the church before Lent to place the Little Black Lenten books in the pews. Then there was the Pancake Breakfast and Lenten Dinners. Ladies were helping with the Friday afternoon food prep, serving and acting as cashiers. Food was prepared for the Snuggs family along with many, many prayers for Grace. The UTD students were fed and several ladies helped with the Golden Saints Luncheon. Of course, we always have wonderful desserts at the community meal that are provided by the ladies. No one goes away without his or her sweet tooth being satisfied. Along with all of these events, we find all of our ladies very active in many other areas of church activities. We are a small group, but we use our talents generously. Many, many thanks go out to all of our ladies.

At our February meeting, Anne Stuart gave a wonderful program on Lent. She presented four topics that might guide all of us to a better Lenten journey. They included the following:

Is Your World Caving In? Forgiveness is not Optional. Is your Attitude the Same as that of Christ Jesus? Have you Grown Cold Towards God's Word?

Each topic included a reading, several thoughts on the topic, and a chance for the ladies to discuss the topic. Many thanks to Anne for giving us some things to think about as we go through Lent.

At our March meeting we will be asking for a Chairperson for the 2014 Ladies Day of Reflection. It is our turn to provide the Chairperson, and we will also need three members to be on the committee. The date of January 11, 2014 has been reserved and the speaker is set. So please think about how you can help. We also need a nominating committee for the 2013-2014 officers. Please consider helping with that also.

We send congratulations to Erica and Daniel Salzman on the birth of their new baby girl, Mary Agnes, on February 12. Because she was premature, she is still in the hospital and will be for a while. We will keep her and her mom and dad in our many prayers.

Teach Them Well

Dear Brother Knights, Raising children is probably the hardest job you’ll ever take. It requires you to wear more hats than you ever thought possible. Cook, chauffeur, nurse, counselor and many more… and that’s often in one morning. One of the most important roles you accept as a parent is that of a teacher. Before they even get to school, you’ll teach your children so much, and before they get out into the world, you’ll instill values that they will carry with them. Sometimes the values you want to impart (respect, compassion, accountability, financial responsibility, etc.) often run counter to what our instant-gratification driven society values. So, we strive to teach by

example. This is one good reason to carry enough life insurance to protect your family. This one simple act can show what you value. You’ll show them that you love them and are concerned about their welfare. You’ll show that you take your responsibility to provide for your family seri- ously, and that you want to make sure they’re provided for even if you’re not around. You’ll show them that investing money in your life insurance protection is more important than the new set of golf clubs you might want, the newest and best home theater system you’ve had your eye on, or whatever else you might be sacrificing to pay the premiums.

It will teach them about priorities. Sure, it may not sink in at the time, especially if any of the sacrifices made prevent them from filling what they see as their immediate “needs” (really things they want, not need, like the newest DVD, video or article of clothing). In the long run, they will learn from what you do and what you don’t do. Only you can choose the lessons you will teach. Let’s meet to review your existing coverage. My needs analysis, provided free, will help teach you where your coverage may be lacking. We can plan today to secure your family’s future and set in motion lessons that will last a lifetime. God bless you all. VIVAT JESUS!

From The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson In his recent document

Pope Benedict reminded us that charity is “a constitutive element of the Church’s mission and an indispensable expression of her very being.” All believers, he said, have a duty to devote themselves to charity. And as the pope has so often said, the method that speaks strongest of Christ is love. As Knights, we should be prepared to let charity be our measure of the

new evangelization. In this way we can truly promote “a charity that evangelizes.” As Catholics we are well positioned, because of the leadership of our popes and our bishops, to offer concrete solutions to the problems of our hemisphere. No other institution has proposed a single vision that can transcend cultures and languages. This vision is not a political vision, but a vision of humanity

encountering Christ. Achieving this unity, though, can only be done by a hopeful, loving Christian witness. Such an authentic Catholic identity must be formed and strengthened by the sacraments and lived in total faithfulness to the Church and in commitment to Jesus Christ. VIVAT JESUS!
