GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGEBrother Knights,

Another Fraternal Year is behind us and it is time to take stock of our achievements during the past 12 months and plan for the year ahead. Before doing so I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone in the council for your support and assistance to me during my first term as Grand Knight. I truly could not have gotten through this year without all your help, encouragement and guidance. To our retiring officers and directors I would like to say thank you on behalf of the whole council for your service.

This last year has seen many changes in both our council and parish with the departure of Bishop Mark and Father Vincent. As of this writing, I have not had the opportunity to speak with our new Pastor and discuss with him who our Chaplain for the forthcoming year. Rest assured that once I know this I will let you know. We have finally obtained

approval to start our Squires Circle subject to a response from Supreme which our Worthy Diocesan Deputy is tracking down. We have strengthened our relationship within the parish by forming the major parish organizations meeting thanks to Doyle's foresight. The MPO now provides a forum for the backbone of the parish to get together to plan and execute various events without the need to burden the parish staff. This has proven highly successful and well received.

The highly successful Italian Dinner has enabled us to raise enough funds to move forward with the communication project we agreed to undertake for the Parish last year. We now await the assistance of the parish to facilitate the ordering of the necessary equipment.

We have made our membership goals for the year, our insurance goals and met the requirements for the service programs to qualify for Star Council. This is a great achievement but with the rewards comes the responsibility for next year. With our membership now close to 250 members, the quota for next year has increased to 17 new members (net) and 6 new Insurance members. However, these numbers are simply a means to an end. What is more important is that we ensure that we offer the chance of membership in our great order to every eligible Catholic man.

Thank you for a great year - lets aim for a brighter one this year.

We have made our membership goals for the year, according to the Supreme statistics, but until we have invited every eligible Catholic man to join our ranks we still have work to do. Inviting someone to join the order is not just about adding another tick in the growth column, we need to view it as an act of love to our brother enabling him to answer his calling to serve. We are Called to be the Light of Christ.

Vivat Jesus Gerry

MONTHLY RECOGNITIONS Knight of the Month

The Knight of the Month is not normally awarded to an officer of the Council as they are expected to devote significant time and effort to the running of the council. However, as with all rules, there is always an exception and this is the case for the month of May. Our annual patriotic event this year returned to the high standards and parish participation that we had come to expect mostly through the determination and drive of one individual without whom this year’s event would not have been the success it was. Therefore, I am pleased to award the Knight of the Month for May to Chris Diaz. There were no recipients of the Family of the Month for May or the Knight of the Month and Family of the Month for June.

Other Recognitions

After two three-year terms as Financial Secretary, Mike Riley receives Certificate of Appreciation for his service. Mike was elected as a Trustee of the council and now serves in that capacity.

In In commemoration of the Year of Faith as declared by Pope Benedict XVI, the Knights of Columbus set forth a Year of Faith Action Plan. A Year of Faith Icon is presented to councils completing at least one activity in each of four major areas of the Year of Faith Action Plan. These include Faith Professed, Faith Lived, Faith Celebrated and Faith Prayed. Doyle Kitchen, who was instrumental in our earning of this distinction, accepted the icon on behalf of the council.

and tracked in the system

Leadership Award This year has seen a significant advancement in the level of cooperation between the Major Parish Organizations (MPO) - All Saints Women’s Organization, All Saints Men's Club, the Fall Festival committee and our Lumen Christi Council and it’s auxiliary. This was primarily accomplished through the efforts of the recipient of this year's Leadership Award. This would never have been possible without his dogged promotion. This year we award this distinction to Doyle Kitchen.

Rookie of the Year This year we have two brother knights who have earned this accolade. Their willingness to serve is an excellent example for all our brother knights.

Even before he officially became a Knight of Columbus, Robert Mokry stepped up and became involved in many of our projects in particular Sunday Morning Fellowship and our Pancake breakfasts.

Mark Greim has stepped forward to serve as our Family Director, has chaired our family picnic and is actively working to start our new Squires Circle.

Family of the Year The Family of the Year is presented to a family who serves as role model of what a "Catholic family" should be to our council and parish. Jeff and Grace Snuggs were named Family of the Year. Despite undergoing trials that would overwhelm the best of us, they have consistently demonstrated trust in our loving God and in doing so they have certainly provided a great example to the council and parish community.

Knight of the Year When someone retires, they are often asked what they will do to fill their day. For the 2012-2013 Knight of the Year – John Meyer - the answer has been

simple - fill your day with the many tasks that the Grand Knight asks him to do. Without his help and willingness to jump in, many activities would not have happened. He has provided an example of the self-sacrificing service that a Knight of Columbus has for his family, his council and his parish.

Pope Francis Award for Charitable Service The election of our Holy Father and his call to the service of the poor prompted the creation of a new award for the council, the "Pope Francis Award for Charitable Service". This is a lifetime achievement award and is awarded rarely. There was little difficulty in deciding who the inaugural recipient of this award would be. The “Bread Run” is a significant element of the charitable work we do as a council. A small number of council members weekly collect food from area supermarkets (in this case Thom Thumb) and deliver them to the Missionaries of Charity. This is the “Triece Brigade” (see related article on page 10).

While the council has made this part of its program since 2009, it all started many years ago by Harry Triece and his wife Lorraine who spent many years performing this function with very few people knowing or assisting. It was because of his advanced years that Harry is not doing this today. But he ensured that he safely passed this important task on to his brother knights. Lumen Christi Council is honored to name Harry Triece as the first recipient of the Pope Francis Award for Charitable Service.

Other Recognitions During the evening program, the Grand Knight recognized retiring officers Vic Owen, John Arciniega and Chris Diaz for their years of service (two, four and nine respectively). Other retiring officers not present at the awards ceremony were Ron Schott and Steve Trax who each served two years.

Pro-Life SUMMERTIME We are now into the summer months and Pro-Life major activities are off in the distance. The next event is the Hike for Life in September. The weekly Rosary at Dallas abortion centers continues unabated by the summer’s heat. We are able to find welcome shade at four out of the five centers and the shade does help to keep us cool. The fifth center is right in the open and there is just no way to avoid the heat – so we dress as cool as possible and carry some water along. At the Robinson clinic, there has been a large open lot across the street from the clinic. On our last visit about 2/3rds of the lot had been paved with concrete and the old overflow parking lot next to it had all the asphalt torn up in preparation to put down more concrete. This is kind of a sad situation indicating that business must be good. When we are praying outside of this facility, it is not unusual to see multiple women enter and leave the facility. When the ladies leave the center they either walk out on their own or are brought out in a wheel chair. The wheel chairs are the sad ones as this indicates a fairly major abortion procedure has occurred. The ladies that use this facility cover the entire spectrum. Some are well off as indicated by the cars in which they arrive/leave. The complexions vary also. About 70% are African

American, 25% are Latino and the remaining are white. Robinson gives us the unique opportunity to see who the clients are. At the other centers we can only guess who the clients are. One of the prayers we use is said before the 4th Sorrowful Mystery and it goes like this: “Jesus was not condemned by the power of wicked people. He was condemned because of the silence of good people. Silence always helps the oppressor, never the victim. Let us pray that we may never be silent about abortion, but rather will clearly speak up to save babies from death.” (From the Rosary of the Unborn booklet.) Are you one of the silent ones??? Please contact Jim or Sharon DeSmet at 972-931-8405 or [email protected] with any questions or to sign up for Pro-Life events.

PRO-LIFE TIP OF THE MONTH July 2013

Is it legal to talk to an abortion-bound woman outside abortion facilities?

As long as one remains on public property and does not block the public right-of-way, it is perfectly legal to talk to a woman going into an abortion facility, to her companion, or to anyone else. It is not permissible to go onto private property in order to communicate,

unless specifically invited there by someone with the authority to make the invitation.

The right to free speech is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,

and does not depend on the hearer’s permission or interest in hearing the speech.

Pro-Life

MEMBERS DRIVE TO AUSTIN FOR HISTORIC RESOLUTION 2 VOTE

On July 9, 2013 the Texas State Legislature held a historic vote called House Resolution 2. The vote was held in a special session called by Governor Rick Perry. It was required because the pro-choice side deliberately mounted a successful filibuster in the Senate, which prevented the final vote on the bill during the regular session.

Two days prior, I learned that that Texas House was having this vote and decided that our Lumen Christi Council should have a presence at the vote to offset the resistance from the pro-abortionists. We sent out the call and we were able to get four knights and one “vacationing” knight to head to Austin and stand for the rights of the unborn. Members of the All Saints high school ministry core team joined us for the trip. Our knights were, Rex Anand, Josh Schwartz, Jim DeSmet, his wife Sharon and me. We were lucky to have Len Kiefel join us as well. He drove our motley crew down to the event and

back.

When we arrived on the Capitol steps, the first person we met was Jesus in the form of the Eucharist. A priest and several members of his congregation were there glorifying our Lord and asking his help. We all took part in the Eucharistic adoration and then the congregation joined in procession to walk around the Capitol.

Five of us chose to enter the Capitol to get an understanding of what we were going to need to do. Josh and his core team members went out to talk to the pro-choice people. They spent many hours among them, working with them to help them understand why we were pro-life.

The rest of us were determined to hold a position in the Texas House gallery so that the pro-choice people would not be able to dominate the session as they did in the Senate’s last session. The session started at 10:00 AM but we did not enter the chamber until 3:00 PM. The main reason was that we really did not know where to go or what to do.

The Lord guided us though. We thought the gallery was full so we went into an overflow room to watch part of the proceedings. A member of another church came into the room. He said that the pro-choice faction was marshaling forces and they were going to attempt to occupy the rotunda and dominate the gallery. He asked the people in the room to get into the gallery or rotunda. We all left and got in line to enter the gallery. We thought it was full but when people in the gallery left their seats, people who were outside immediately replaced them. The wait took about forty minutes but we all got into the gallery.

Again, God was good to us. We all had excellent seats to watch the proceedings. There were 25 amendments offered by the pro-choice side to stall the vote and many of them offered a back door to water down the new bill and allow a woman to abort her child 20 weeks after the baby’s conception.

Around 8:00 pm the Texas House finally voted. They chose to end abortions in the State of Texas at 20 weeks. Assuming the Senate votes to uphold this bill and the Governor signs it, no more abortions will be performed in Texas after a baby is 20 weeks in gestation

I fully expect that the opposition will immediately take the bill to court to overturn it as they do with so many pro-life and religious issues. This will give us another opportunity to stand up again as Knights of Columbus to support life. It could be very soon. I look forward to seeing our numbers increase at the next event.

HISTORIC RESOLUTION 2 VOTE – continued from page 7 -

When the vote concluded the members of the Texas House left the floor and entered the rotunda. As pro-life House members passed by they were greeted by pro-choice people shouting, “shame on you” which were magnified by the sounds reverberating off the granite walls of the large gallery. These supposedly compassionate people were filled with hate; there were at least 40 state troopers present to protect our legislators.

I believe I felt Satan himself in our Capitol that night. By being around some of the pro-choice people and hearing their reactions to the pro-life speeches I know that they have no respect for the unborn child and that they view a baby in the womb as an inconvenience at best and at worst just an unnecessary growth that needs to be removed. I heard many of these conversations with my own ears.

As we were walking out of the Capitol to go home a House member saw my Knights of Columbus shirt and came over to me and said, “you are a Knight of Columbus.” Another House member came over to me. We spoke for a few minutes. They thanked us all for being there. I wish we had 500 Knights there to support the members who choose life.

There are few days in a man's life that are memorable. Some of these are his first communion, confirmation, wedding, birth of a child, loss of a loved one, and graduations. In addition, July 9, 2013 is one of those days for me. I stood with my brother Knights and together we showed the world that the Knights of Columbus are one hundred percent, unequivocally pro-life. I also had an opportunity to get to know my brothers better and I am so proud to know each one of you.

LUMEN CHRISTI COUNCIL FAMILY GROWS BY FOUR During the final months of the fraternal year four council families welcomed gifts from God with new additions to their family.

At top left, Mary Agnes Salzman, the only girl of the group, arrived first – and unexpectedly early – on February 12. Parents Erica and Daniel welcomed her home in June after a lengthy stay in the hospital.

At top right is the only one of the group with siblings. Katie and Josh Schwartz hold Michael Joseph (yes, like Fr. McGivney) who arrived on April 7 while his dad was recovering from his mountain bike mishap.

At bottom left is Luke Joseph McGrane with dad and mom, Peter and Jennifer. Luke arrived on June 24.

At bottom right is the last of the group, John Paul Anthony with Matt and Megan Woyak who arrived a day later on June 25.

Please take time to congratulate the new parents and welcome the new members of our “extended family” to the world. -compiled by Chris Diaz; pictures submitted from various sources

Council BLINTZES RETURN ON JUNE MENU It was a mere two weeks before the event so I had to make the decision for what the feature menu item was to be (you know, bulletin insert and announcements from the pulpit). Rumblings from the crew at previous pancake breakfasts told me not to do it, but there was one individual who kept egging (no pun intended) me on- “Come on, you can do it”!

So, cheese blintzes it was, once again. The prep crew was confident that cooking eighty would go as smooth as last time – NOT! Someone brought the wrong sized pan, which cut our production by one third! The comments, the screams of burning fingers, the name-calling… one just had to be there to realize the camaraderie.

The toppings were a hit; there was blueberry/raspberry and blackberry/raspberry, which folks seemed to enjoy (these will both be “keepers” for the future). We served approximately 154 and no indigestion or nausea was reported, which is always a good sign!

Two more comments- “Presentation is everything?” and the person who pushed us to make Blintzes in the first place, did not get any leftovers, which must mean they must have been pretty good!

Thanks to all who came to prep and certainly those who came to cook and clean up, even if you came late, Pancake Breakfast is always worth it…

PARISH COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT UPDATE The first phase of the parish communications project is nearly complete thanks to the efforts of Larry Brennan. Stan Tax arranged for a donation of the cork

material from his distributor, Southern Wood Flooring. Larry provided the labor and expertise to transform the area.

At left, we see the bulletin boards with buckling cork and scattered posters open to the narthex prior to the renovation as well as a sample of the blind covering the

windows from inside the conference room.

At right, the pictures show the refurbished look after Larry built the bulletin boards on hinges that open into the conference room allowing for control of the material on display – all behind glass that already existed. Access to this “display case” type area is from inside the conference room.

Making blintzes is a multi-step process. Above Ed Munno is in the background cooking one side of the crepe while Doyle Kitchen finishes it off. Below Shirley Sammons has the task of filling and rolling the blintzes while Al Steindorf provides moral support.

Council THE WEEKLY BREAD RUN… aka THE “TRIECE BRIGADE”

The name is not so common but there is much history behind “The Bread Run” as it is now commonly called. This weekly activity started over 30 years ago by Harry Triece long before he was a member of our council. Harry became a Knight of Columbus in 1958 but never became very active with the Order as other priorities commanded his time after leaving the military service. He even let his membership lapse. After seeing the many charitable efforts of Lumen Christi Council in his home parish, he reactivated his membership in February of 2007 – and earned his major degrees. It only took him 50 years to become a full Knight! With advancing years making it difficult to continue his weekly trip down to south Dallas where the Missionaries of Charity are located, he asked the council if they would be interested in helping continue this tradition. Chris Diaz, Grand Knight at the time, of course said yes and in January 2009 the Triece Brigade was formed. Believe it or not, it takes more than 12 fellow Knights to replace Harry’s energy and commitment. (See related article on page 5 about Harry being named the first recipient of the Pope Francis Award for Charitable Service).

Those Knights who take the time out of their day on a rotating schedule include: Larry Milliken, John Meyer, Ron Schott, Henry Dominguez, Bob Wise, Larry Brennan, Bernie Crotty, Tobey Murphy, Ed Monaghan, Jack Ayers, Al Steindorf and Stan Tax. Others fill in when substitutes are required. Rain or shine the only issue is whether to take the Marsails exit or the Saner exit? Of course we feel much better if the load is plentiful, but we all put our vehicles on auto pilot and reach our final destination, regardless of traffic issues.

The Missionaries of Charity is a Roman Catholic religious congregation established in 1950 by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. It consists of over 4,501 religious sisters and is active in 133 countries. Members of the order designate their affiliation using the order's initials, "M.C." A member of the Congregation must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "Wholehearted and Free service to the poorest of the poor."

It is my pleasure to offer my services - along with the other members of the “Triece Brigade” - to such a worthwhile organization. Please consider signing up and sharing in this fulfilling experience as we do every week.

SUNDAY MORNING SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS At the strong urging of our pancake breakfast chairman and confirmed in the initial vote on the 2013-2014 calendar at our last business meeting, there was no pancake breakfast in July despite the pulpit announcement at the early Masses. Furthermore, in anticipation of the planned installation of our new Pastor and subsequent reception, the August pancake breakfast is moved to August 25. Therefore, we will have Sunday Morning Fellowship with coffee and donut holes as noted below (with captains in parenthesis). July 28 (Kevin Finch), August 4 (Jeff Stuart), August 11 (Kevin Finch), August 18 (Pat Heaney). Pancakes will return with coffee and donuts on August 25 with Mike Riley as captain. Please consider spending some time assisting with this very visible Lumen Christi activity. Help is appreciated during set up at 7 AM, clean up at 1 PM and immediately following all morning masses when the crowds are heavy.

REDEMPTORIS MATER SEMINARY TOUR AND DINNER A wonderful experience meeting several Redemptoris Mater seminarians, touring their evolving facilities, and sharing dinner and conversation was available to Brother Knights on Friday evening, June 21.

While my driving directions were excellent, I drove right past the gate the first time. It’s a little obscured by shrubs as you approach on a two lane blacktop road in South Dallas’ Cockrell Hill area, south of I-30, an area that in our 34 years living in Dallas we had never visited. But the Seminary sign appeared just as I was passing the gate. With traffic right behind me, I had to turn around at the next intersection.

Through the gate was a more than adequate concrete parking area, and a couple of large old trees in front of a several decades old, three story beige brick building. Carrying an iced case of soft drinks, Pat and I rang the doorbell, but no one answered. The door was unlocked, so we entered a wide hallway, floored with highly reflective hardwood floors and surrounded by glistening white walls and wonderful oak doorways, with two young men about 20 feet away. Dressed in casual work clothes, we were unsure who they were, and explained we were there for the K of C Seminarian Dinner. We were escorted down the hall through two large doors into…the back half of the building, which was undergoing serious remodeling. The Sisters of Charity, who own the building, had recently turned over the back half of the building to the Seminary, and the seminarians are providing most all of the construction labor.

A seminarian took us back up the hall, then a right turn down a short lateral hall to the dining room. High ceiling, an abundance of recessed lights, impeccable hardwood floors, doors and windows, and gleaming bright white ceiling and walls, with a variety of religious artwork. All restored in prior years by the seminarians. When Redemptoris Mater first obtained use of the building, there was old, soiled carpet on top of old linoleum on top of plywood on top of old hardwood (now magnificently refinished). Not much was said about the walls…which have all been replaced by new sheetrock.

Event Chairman Chris Diaz was already there, having brought the brisket, pulled pork, potato salad and cole slaw dinner from Woody B’s. We briefly toured the immaculate and adequate stainless steel kitchen, while other Knights and spouses arrived shortly after we did.

Then we were led on a tour of the seminary. Starting with a climb up two flights of stairs to the third level (no elevator luxury here), we were ushered into a recently remodeled prayer room. Beige-grey carpet covered the floor…reminiscent of the desert, where both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ went to pray before their public ministries. Individual “thrones” and desk-tables, made of mahogany by the seminarians in a benefactor’s workshop, lined both walls of a long, beamed,

low ceilinged room, facing the opposing wall. At the far end, the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a tabernacle; at the near end is a tall presider’s chair, flanked by a smaller chair on each side. And to the right, and just behind, the presider, a short alcove with perhaps six more individual “thrones” and desk-tables, used by the “sisters” who work cooking, cleaning, etc. in support of the seminary. The walls gleamed white and are deeply textured, somewhat like a raw sponge, symbolic of the nurturing texture of the womb. A moving, peaceful retreat from the cares and labors of each day, an upper room to share with The Lord in prayer and meditation. All crafted by the Seminarians themselves, replacing what had previously been a simple study area.

We descended to the second floor, visiting a chapel, also with the Blessed Sacrament reposed in a tabernacle and available to the seminarians for prayer and reflection even at unusual hours, for instance, late at night when unable to sleep. Smallish, but with beautiful windows, a gift from a northern church. And carpeted in blue, a reminder of the sea, when Peter got out of the boat to meet Christ. Peter walked safely on the water while he kept his eyes…and his faith…on Christ, but faltered when his attention was distracted. Again, the remodeling labor was provided by the seminarians.

In the library, which the seminarians thought would never have enough books to fill all the shelves they had constructed, religious and scholarly books nearly fill the space, thanks to numerous donations. It also houses three computers and, when we toured, was “storing” perhaps eight more computers that will be installed in a new computer room the seminarians are building as part of the remodeling of the back half of the building.

The second floor also houses the Rector’s office and a conference room, and somewhat separately, the sleeping rooms for the seminarians.

Then back to the first floor, to a prayer room in the front corner of the building, where we joined the seminarians in the solemn evening prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Part prayed, part sang, led by a cantor with response from the seminarians and ourselves as guests.

The evening’s highlight followed - dinner with the seminarians and the Rector, The Very Reverend Fernando Carranza (he prefers “Fr. Fernando”). For the seminarians, perhaps Woody B’s food was the highlight. For the Knights and their spouses, the opportunity to converse with these hard-studying, hard-working and hard-praying young men from various countries was simply awesome. Each seminarian has a unique story, both of his life before, and since, entering the seminary. Their acceptance of the Redemptoris Mater mission, participating in a lottery to determine which seminary they will attend, in which country around the globe, leaving home and family, dedicating themselves to the Diocese to which they are assigned, and embarking on a rigorous course of study (most at the Dallas seminary have to learn English before they can begin their studies at the University of Dallas), continuing spiritual formation and growth – so many life-changing scenarios embraced so willingly by each of these young men.

How fortunate we are, here in the Diocese of Dallas, in the wealthiest country of the world, with a culture that is, issue by issue, yielding to the new morality rather than to the New Jerusalem, to have these dedicated young men undergoing the preparation for the holy priesthood, to serve God and us in this land so far away from most of their homes, where we are not fostering enough vocations to maintain and grow our Church from our own society.

All of the Knights and spouses who attended, and especially those attending for the first time, certainly came away from this evening with a new reverence for God’s work among these young men, a greater appreciation for what the Redemptoris Mater mission is, and admiration for each of the young men we met during this experience. For a more first-hand view, ask Chris Diaz, Jack Ayers, John Doyle, Jim or Sharon DeSmet, Bob or Betty Wise, Mike or Rosemary Greene, Kevin Finch, Bob or Pat Weaver.

MISSION POSSIBLE FOOD SERVICE

Most of you know me by now; I do a little leg work to get a good bargain for what I buy! Extra-long hotdogs were bought at one place, buns were secured with multiple trips to another place because of limits on their purchase, pico components bought at different stores, and so on.

We prepped the pico de gallo the day before along with the beans and coleslaw. We steamed hot dogs and reheated the beans at All Saints in the morning before everything was transported via caravan to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The rest of the crew was waiting to wrap the dogs, prep drinks, and set up the tables. Hey, we just served 600+ adults for the priest’s farewell reception, 400+ kids were a piece of cake!

Thanks to all who helped chop, stir, blend, steam, wrap, serve, transport, and clean-up- including Bernie and Donna Ehrler, Jim and Shirley Sammons, John and Barb Myer, Steve Trax, John Leffingwell, Ron Schott, Rob Hewitt, Mary Klotz, Ed Munno, Al Steindorf, Chris Diaz, Gerry Rice. The mission possible youth group appreciated all of our efforts.

VBS FAMILY NIGHT ASSISTANCE

Kingdom Rock, the 2013 Vacation Bible School program at All Saints Church recently completed its short week program with a family night in Fellowship Hall. Ten members of the Lumen Christi family assisted in the program finale by distributing sandwiches to the young attendees and their families. Many thanks to Jack Ayers, Doyle Kitchen, John Leffingwell, Ed Monaghan, Greg Neywick, Jim and Shirley Sammons, Stan Schwieterman, Al Steindorf and Stan Tax for their commitment to this evening activity that has traditionally been supported by our council.

Liaison Reports LADIES AUXILIARY REPORT

Our June meeting was a very special one as we held a baby shower for Baby Mary Agnes Salzman and mom, Erica. They received many wonderful gifts as they celebrated Mary Agnes’ homecoming. We were all very happy to visit with Erica and hear about Mary Agnes’ progress after her lengthy stay in the hospital. We are happy that she is home with mom and dad, and thriving.

At our June meeting we also welcomed our newest member, Melinda Downey, whose husband Matthew is a new Knight. They recently came from the Cayman Islands where they were working for three years. She is a mother of five and a grandmother of eleven. We look forward to getting to know her and working with her in our many ways we support the Knights.

June was a busy month for the Ladies Auxiliary. Beside the shower, many attended the Corporate Communion and Installation Banquet on June 29th. Everyone enjoyed a great meal and wonderful fellowship. Grace and Jeff Snuggs were named Family of the Year for 2012-2013 at the banquet. We are very proud of them. What a special honor for a very special family. Many thanks to all who attended and helped with the set up and the cleanup for the banquet. The following day was the Farewell Reception for Bishop Mark and Father Vincent. Lady Knights were out in numbers setting up the tables, preparing and serving the food plates and cake, and of course cleaning up. Again, many thanks for all your help.

We will also be setting up a schedule to help Ann Fox collect donations for the Pancake Breakfasts. Help will be needed after the three Sunday morning Masses on the third Sunday of the month. More info will come on this at the next meeting.

Many, many thanks to all who provide meals for the Snuggs family. They are very thankful for the special care that we provide them. Grace has been going to Houston for more tests this month. Please pray for good news.

The officers for 2013-2014 were installed during the community meal before our July business meeting. We look forward to another great year.

Liaison Reports

SEMINARY AND SEMINARIAN ACTIVITIES During the months of June and July our seminarians at both Holy Trinity Seminary in Irving and the Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Missionary Seminary in south Dallas were busy and members of Lumen Christi Council were busy in support of these fine young men discerning God’s will for them.

As each of the seminarians completed their school work for this semester, they learned their assignments for their next year of formation. Ross Busby and Stephen Ingram will be moving on to Theology I at the Theological College in Washington, DC. (see related article on page 16). Tymo Ksiazkiewicz will return to the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Denver for Theology II. Samuel Martinez will follow in the footsteps of Michal Markiewicz and will stay in Dallas and start pre-Theology at the University of Dallas. Michal Markiewicz will begin his Itinerancy program at the Domus Galilaeae formation center on the slopes of the Mount of Beatitudes in Israel. The facility is used for studies and retreats, Christian seminars and conventions.

In early June, Redemptoris Mater Seminary held their first Fall Festival on the grounds of the seminary in Cockrell Hill. Similar to our annual event at All Saints, their festival served two purposes – fund raising and fun interaction with the area communities. The event definitely had a Hispanic flair as the music and menu items will attest. As a patron of the festival I

was witness to our own council members Michal Markiewicz in the dunking booth; Tymo Ksiazkiewicz on crutches and Samuel Martinez proudly displaying some of his handiwork for sale. From the size of the crowd in attendance, this seemed to be a very successful event.

The Lumen Christi Council annual dinner with the seminarians at Redemptoris Mater is detailed in a separate article submitted by Bob Weaver on pages 11-12. He writes about the seminary tour that highlights the work being done in the building and on the grounds of the Cockrell Hill campus – much of it by the seminarians. Bob also alludes to the “life-changing scenarios embraced so willingly by each of these young men” and goes on to speak of his “new reverence for God’s work among these young men…” For those who have not ventured out to south Dallas to join us on previous trips, please look out for details of the next outing to Cockrell Hill.

On June 28 I was privileged and honored to be invited to the Installation of Lectors and Acolytes at Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Missionary Seminary presided by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Kevin J. Farrell, DD, Bishop of Dallas. On this occasion, six men moved one step closer toward the priesthood. Tymoteusz Ksiazkiewicz and Branimir Pavelin were elevated to the lectorate while Juan Jose Hernandez, Radoslaw Michal Markiewicz, Roshan Fernandes and Giuseppe Spoto were made acolytes. Most reading this article will recognize Michal and Tymo as two of the seminarians we support through the RSVP program and are members of our council. At one time or another, each of the six also received assistance with travel arrangements through the generosity of council members.

SEMINARIAN ACTIVITIES – continued from page 15 –

Speaking of travel arrangements, did you notice how difficult it is to get seats via mileage with all the airlines merging and less flights going to fewer cities? Well it hit me pretty hard while trying to assist our seminarians at Redemptoris Mater complete their travel arrangement so that they could make their traditional World Youth Day pilgrimage. But after a lot of phone and computer time and through the generosity of a number of people in and out of Lumen Christi Council, WE DID IT! We were originally asked to help eight, but after learning of the scarcity of flights available for mileage this year, three seminarians found other benefactors to assist. That is five seminarians; close to 66,000 flying miles; over 125 hours of flight; 330,000 airline miles plus $365 in taxes and fees and an extra $4,000 in purchased tickets. Is it worth it?

During each World Youth Day organized by the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope summons youths from all over the world to a chosen city. The Neocatechumenal Way has been an active supporter of these, rallying its young members to attend. For instance, during World Youth Day 2008 held in Sydney, George Cardinal Pell said that of the 110,000 international visitors that attended, 40,000 were from the Neocatechumenal Way and some 300,000 attended Madrid World Youth Day.

During the event, young members of the Neocatechumenal Way meet for a "vocational call." In Sydney, for example, approximately 1,500 men answered the call for the priesthood and 850 young women stood up to show their willingness to a consecrated life, and in Bonn (2005) around 1,500 young men and another 900 young women answered the call. These young men and women begin a process of discernment in their own dioceses and communities, which may lead to priesthood (most of the priestly vocations go to a "Redemptoris Mater" seminary) or consecrated life.

Thank you Rudy Arciniega, Woody Berry, Chris Diaz, James Dudley, Reed Fontenot (13044), Pat Heaney, John Leffingwell, Larry Montz (13044), Ed Munno, Vic Muse (5052), Carl Ondracek, Huey Prater and Chick Young. If anyone else would like to make donations, we will still accept pledges and any dollars not used now will be earmarked for the next pilgrimage. UPDATES FROM THE ALL SAINTS SEMINARIANS

Ross and I will remain in Omaha through the end of July and we will be going up to DC in late August. The summer program we are in, the Institute for Priestly Formation, is focused on the unique spirituality of the diocesan priest. We are primarily studying various methods of contemplative prayer, relying heavily on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The program is a sort of spiritual 'boot camp', helping us to grow in our relationship with God, coming to know Him personally as opposed to intellectually; instead of trying to know more about God, we are trying to know Him more as a person.

When this program completes, we will return to Dallas briefly for the seminarian convocation, where we will get to catch up with the other Dallas seminarians who attend other seminaries and meet our new class of seminarians for the first time. After convocation, we have a few weeks to prepare for the move up to Washington, DC. We will spend that time unpacking, sorting, and repacking what we will take with us and spend some time with our families, whom we will not be able to see nearly as often in the coming years.

The seminary we will be attending in the fall is Theological College in Washington, DC. It is located just across the street from the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the Catholic University of America, where we will take most of our classes. Since we are entering the theologate, we will be refocusing our studies from philosophy to theology, and begin to learn more about the Church and how we relate to God. Ross and I will begin with another seminarian from Dallas, Wade Bass, a parishioner of Christ the King, and the three of us will join Michael Baynham, a parishioner of St. Ann in Coppell, who will be beginning his second year at Theological College. We are very excited to be attending Theological College, especially since it is the seminary that our own pastor, Fr. Lackland, attended for his theologate. We are blessed to be able to attend such a prestigious seminary and pray that God will do great things in us there.

God bless, Stephen Ingram

Different life stages, changing needs Dear Brother Knights, Paying for college for your children may be one of your family’s current needs. You may be concerned about a comfortable, worry-free retirement. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife, children or grandchildren. At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind. Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20, may not be at 30, or 45, or 65. What is the best way to be prepared for these changes before they happen?

One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come with different life stages is to meet annually with your professional Knights of Columbus agent, and address the needs that his analysis uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and issues on the road ahead. During that annual visit, I’ll take the time to review your needs, goals and budget. I’ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure your coverage meets your needs. I’ll recommend a program of life insurance, long-term care insurance and guaranteed income annuities that will help you rest easy at night. Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns,

whatever your stage in life, I can help. Call me – let’s talk. Remember that waiting to plan can cost us all dearly so don’t delay in getting your free Financial review. As always I welcome any questions you might have by way of email, phone or in person at a council meeting. I am proud to be your Field Agent. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. God bless you all. VIVAT JESUS!

From The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson We most likely think of Father McGivney as Pope Benedict XVI did in his 2008 homily in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral — as that “exemplary American priest” whose legacy is so much a part of the “impressive growth” of the Catholic Church in America during the 19th century. But we also do well to recall that many of the struggles Father McGivney faced were similar to those we face today. And like today, immigrants were a strong presence in the United States. At St. Mary’s, those immigrants

mostly Irish. However, Father McGivney had entered seminary in Quebec in part because it would help him better serve the many French-Canadian Catholics living in Connecticut at the time. In fact, Father McGivney responded in a very personal way to the problems confronting his immigrant parish community, including homelessness, substance abuse, violence and family break-ups. This is demonstrated, for instance, by his prison ministry to Chip Smith and his probate

court appearance on behalf of Alfred Downes. In his first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict wrote about the need to cultivate a “heart that sees” where love is needed. Such a charitable heart was at the center of Father McGivney’s ministry as a parish priest and was the basis for his founding the Knights of Columbus. VIVAT JESUS!
