GRAND KNIGHT’S FINAL MESSAGE Brother Knights,

We began the month of June celebrating the ordination of four new priests for the Diocese of Dallas and in particular of Fr. Martin Mwangi who celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving with us here at All Saints on June 1. The reception that followed went off without a hitch, and I would like to thank everyone who helped make it such a special day for the parish.

This month we also see the change of leadership in the council as we install our new Grand Knight and officers for the next fraternal year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers who served with me over these past two years. Without your support and that of the program directors I

would not have been able to perform the duties of my office. I would also like to express my thanks to the members of the council and the Ladies Auxiliary for all of the support you provided to me during my term as Grand Knight.

As I look back over the 10 years since Lumen Christi Council was chartered, it is heartening to see how much our council has become a cornerstone of the parish. We have grown from just over 58 Knights to almost fivefold and our council's reputation within the Diocese of Dallas for being active and well run is a testament to all of your hard work and dedication.

I know that you will join me in giving our support to our new Grand Knight, Harry Storey, and his officers as we move forward into our new fraternal Year.

We are Called to be the Light of Christ.

Vivat Jesus Gerry

MONTHLY RECOGNITIONS Family of the Month The Family of the Month for April is Harry and Jan Storey (pictured at right). Harry has been very supportive to the Grand Knight over the last two years, something that would not have been possible without the support of Jan. Outside of the council Harry and Jan are very active in our community both with The Society of St Vincent de Paul and the Catholic Pro Life Committee.

Knight of the Month The Knight of the Month for April is awarded to Larry Milliken (pictured at right). As well as driving our membership efforts in this last two fraternal years Larry recently stepped up to help a new knight who needed both transport and fellowship as he was treated at Parkland Hospital. Larry sets an excellent example of the fraternal nature of the Order for all of us.

Youth COLUMBIAN SQUIRES ACTIVE IN MAY AND JUNE On June 1, the Squires assisted All Saints Women’s Organization (ASWO) with “Help Your Neighbor Sunday” after morning masses. Many thanks to Connor Thomas, Doug Hailey, Jacob Bulmer and Ed Schwieterman for assisting and loading parishioner donated items on to Catholic Charities truck by the St. Francis garage.

A number of Squires and families were able to make this year's Lumen Christi Council family picnic on May 31, and enjoyed Woody B’s BBQ and other fun events.

Columbian Squires J.R. DeFina and Jacob Pellegrino also served at Mass for Fr. Alfonse during the Lumen Christi Council sponsored Major Degree ceremonies held at All Saints Catholic School.

Supreme Council provided our official Charter certificate for the Columbian Squires Fr. Paul Gray Circle 5717. The Squires and Counselors are working on details for a memorial mass to recognize the naming of Fr. Paul Gray Circle 5717.

Please note that our Squires circle is open to all Catholic boys 10 to 18 years old. Have your son, grandson, and their friends join the Squires to enjoy the service and fun events that they plan each month. The Squires have five levels of advancement that challenges them and provides recognition for the accomplishments completed. If interested contact Counselor Stan Schwieterman (972-239-5830) or see more Squires information in All Saints Welcome Center or at the following link (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/squires/). We meet once a month and plan one fun or service event each month.

Membership MEMBERSHIP CORNER By Larry Milliken Co-Membership Director, Lumen Christi Council

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as membership director. Welcome to incoming Membership Director Kevin Finch. I ask all brother knights to join me and double your support and efforts for membership in the coming fraternal year.

The last two years opened my eyes to areas which, with enhanced effort, will contribute positively to membership growth and an increased number of active knights. This will lead to more family participation, and more knights active in parish and community activities. But most of all, this will assist you and your family in achieving real and rewarding progress in your journey of faith as a Catholic man.

One area where immediate impact is most positive is that of the proposer of applicants for membership in the Knights of Columbus. Often, the proposer is the first person to talk with an applicant about the Knights. Here are some suggested actions that if taken by future proposers, will assure that the Knight’s experience is a win-win for all involved:

Proposer: Arrange to attend, with your candidate, a meeting with the

membership committee. Wives should be invited to attend. Proposer: Introduce candidate to council officers, fellow knights, and

families. Proposer: Promote and attend First Degree and Major Degree ceremonies. Proposer: Discuss with candidates/new Knights their area of activity

interest. Introduce them to event chairmen. Proposer: Be available to answer questions. Sit with the new Knight at

meetings if possible. Proposer: You are developing a long lasting relationship. Set the example.

WELCOME TO NEW KNIGHT Congratulations to Matt Atkinson (pictured above) who was exemplified into the First Degree on June 25 at Prince of Peace. Fellow UTD student, Adam Carr, who recently completed his First Degree, placed the Knights of Columbus pin on Matt. Matt and Adam often attend the 11 AM Mass as well as the pancake breakfasts. Please give Matt your congratulations and welcome him to the Lumen Christi Council.

-article and picture submitted by Larry Milliken

Do all of the above and more and you will find that the knight you helped learn the ropes will do the same for his candidates. You will find being a proposer to be very rewarding. The council and you as a knight will grow. Did RETENTION just become that much easier?

Community FISHER HOUSE LUNCHEON On May 29, 2014, the council provided lunch to the guests and staff of Fisher House. The council Master Chef, Stan Tax, prepared the main course, smoked chicken Alfredo. Preparation and service were provided by Jack Ayers, Barb and John Meyer, Rob Hewitt, and Ed Munno. We served 18 and provided a few “to go" boxes for patients and left plenty for dinner that evening. Our home cooked meals are really appreciated.

Council DOGS FOR 300? MISSION POSSIBLE! Many thanks to those who showed up at All Saints for food prep and/or to Elizabeth Ann Seton for the wrapping and bagging of this years’ Mission Possible luncheon. Those folks included John and Barb Meyer, Jim and Shirley Sammons, Doug Hakala, Larry Brennan, and Ron Schott.

Our prep time to steam 300 dogs was a little off since we discovered that only one of the steamers was operational. There was also some car key issues that caused a few additional delays. With a little help from the Mission Possible staff, we were ready for the young carnivores! Once again we received an ovation for our efforts, which makes events like this well worth it! Hope to see some new faces at these events next year.

As your new Chancellor, it will be my duty to get more members involved in such events. If anyone has any suggestions, please forward them to [email protected] with the proper “subject” line!

CASSEROLES DEVOURED AT MAY BREAKFAST The May pancake breakfast featured a new item, Eggs Benedict Casserole, which was a smashing success! For casserole Sunday our menu also included Crème Brulee French Toast and Sausage Spinach Delight as well as our normal fare. We served 176 hungry patrons.

Because Greg the caterer had a large dinner to prepare, our usual prep time was moved to Saturday. The team who faithfully show up prior to the event and create these dishes, worked Saturday morning and were finished in less than three hours. Shirley Sammons and Barb Meyer joined forces with John Meyer, Jim Sammons, Doug Hakala, Jack Ayers, Ed Munno and Doyle Kitchen to get everything done in record time.

On Sunday, another group of dedicated Knights, some the same as the Saturday prep team, assembled at our kitchen to prepare and serve breakfast. There were a few conflicting events going on so an urgent plea went out to the membership and we were able to get the job done. Pictured on the Sunday support team picture are (l-r) : Bob Pitts, Joe Mock, John Leffingwell, Chance Barkley, Martins Esubl, Curtis James, Doug Otte, Doyle Kitchen, Ed Munno and Greg Taylor.

Others not shown included Steve Patterson, Ann Fox, Barb Meyer, Stan Schwieterman, Bob Weaver and Larry Brennan. (Forgive me if I left anyone out). One of these days, I am going to find out who is munching on bacon all day long! Thank You all for your fine, hard and dedicated work!

Church RECEPTION FOR FR. MWANGI On June 1, 2014, Lumen Christi Council 13520 sponsored a reception following the Mass of Thanksgiving for Fr. Martin Mwangi who was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Dallas the previous day. Council members and family planned the event and prepared food for this very important day for Fr. Mwangi and his family. Additional manpower was supplied by the Ladies Auxiliary, All Saints Women’s Organization (ASWO),

Fr. Martin Mwangi reads inscription on chalice presented at reception while Harry Storey, John Meyer, Barb Meyer amd Sharon DeSmet hold the four chasubles

the Fall Fest Team, the All Saints Men’s Club and members of the All Saints staff. Over 250 family, friends and parishioners were served a light lunch at All Saints Fellowship Hall and gymnasium.

During the reception, Lumen Christi Council presented Fr. Mwangi with several gifts for his Priesthood. These included four chasubles in proper liturgical colors (Red, Green, White and Purple) and one of the chalices used for our Chalice for Vocations Program (see picture, above right). This chalice held many prayers as it was in service for over five years, with many parishioners sharing prayers for vocations from our parish.

ASWO members keep table of plated snacks full. Bottom: Mackenzie Triana and Diane Musha from Fall Fest serve cake.

As with any endeavor of this size, preparations started weeks before the event. Ordering gifts, securing decorations, purchasing food and set-up of both the Fellowship Hall and Gymnasium was coordinated and ready for show time by Saturday morning (with one exception – see sidebar below). On Sunday morning, the Ladies Auxiliary and ASWO started the food preparation and plating. Matt Adams and Don Essmiller hooked up the sound system and a group of knights handled the heating of the meatballs and quiche. This was another team effort, with numerous participants too many to name individually. Special thanks are offered to Barb Meyer who coordinated the effort of the Ladies Auxiliary; Linda Gorman and Mackenzie Triana who did likewise with the ASWO and Fall Fest team respectively; Warren Norris and Al Bush from the Men’s Club and all of the “usual suspects” who worked the KC side of things. Chris Diaz and Jerry Cayce recorded the events - The Mass and Reception - with pictures and video can be viewed on the All Saints parish website (http://www.allsaintsdallas.org)

Personally, I would like to thank our parish staff for their help and participation in planning, setup of tables, chairs, the stage and the tear down of the stage. I most of all want to thank Fr. Martin for coming into the kitchen area to provide his priestly first blessing to Ed Munno and me who were busy “praying with Betsy” - I only wish I thought to ask him to bless Betsy too!

-article submitted by Doyle Kitchen; pictures taken by Jerry Cayce and Chris Diaz… more pictures found on our website. .

YES… IN SUPPORT OF OUR PRIESTS The Friday before the reception after the staff and a few volunteers set up the Fellowship Hall, the gym and the stage, Fr. Tony came in check out final details. He looked at the stage, which was made up of portions of the stage used for the Fall Festival. Out of the four selected for the smaller stage for the reception, one was painted a dark gray and the other three had no paint on them at all. He stood there, he looked, he paused, and then he said, "That looks so ghetto…and I can say that because I came from the ghetto. That looks ghetto." You could imagine the look on our faces. After a couple of seconds he said, "That could use some paint." We asked, "What color?" Thus began an unplanned small project for the reception.

That evening we purchased paint and supplies. On Saturday, we painted the stage. All went well and thanks to Kevin and Mignon Finch for bringing food and beverage to us from the Knights Picnic gathering held at the gazebo that day.

Liaison Reports LADIES AUXILIARY REPORT Barb Meyer, President, Ladies Auxiliary of Lumen Christi

As the 2013-2014 year comes to a close, I would like to thank all who have helped with the many activities that the Ladies Auxiliary has participated in this year. Thanks to the other officers, Vice-Presidents Betty Wise and Sharon DeSmet, and Secretary-Treasurer, Vera Richard, for all their hard work all year long. And thanks to Anne Stuart (Communications), Helen Brennan (Sunshine), and Linda Gorman (Called By Name) for all their hard work during the year. None of us could do our jobs if it weren’t for the support and help from all of our Lady Knights. You are an awesome group of ladies. As I always say, “Nobody can do everything, but everybody does something” and we get everything done that we are asked to do. Thank you again for all that you do, not just for the Lady Knights, but for what you do for your families, our Parish, our Diocese, and our communities.

Installation of the 2014-2015 Officers took place at the Installation Dinner held on June 28. Installed were Barbara Meyer- President, Jan Storey-Vice President, Mary Baldy Klotz-Vice President, and Vera Richard-Secretary/Treasurer. We are looking forward to another very successful year. Thank you to Vera Richard and Pat Weaver for helping with the set-up for the banquet and to Maureen Morel for the pretty table decorations. Congratulations to the Family of the Year recipients, Anne and Jeff Stuart. Both of them are involved in many areas of the Knights and Lady Knights. Anne has served as Communications Director for several years and is the one who gets all the emails to us in a very timely manner, keeps the roster up to date, and volunteers for many of our various projects. She and Jeff make all the name tags for the Ladies Day of Reflection each year. We are very proud of both of them.

We have to say good-bye to Cindy and John Doyle. They are moving in mid-July to Cindy’s hometown of Sandusky, Ohio. They’ll be only 6 hours from DC, so she can help her daughter and they will be near all her family. We will miss them, and wish them well as they get settled in their new home. Thanks to Cindy for all she has done for the Lady Knights and to John for all he has done for the Knights. We also send our thoughts and prayers to Shirley and Bernie Crotty. Shirley’s sister, Teresa, recently passed away. We pray, also, for a speedy recovery from surgery for Mary Baldy Klotz. And last, at our June meeting, we watched a wonderful video on Saint John Paul II.

Young Adult Insurance offers an easy, affordable annual, renewable term insurance to Knights and their spouses ages 18 to 29. Now is the perfect time to build your financial portfolio. Here are several reasons why you may need Young Adult Insurance: Debt, protect loved ones, to meet your budget needs, saves time, you are a Knight, Catholic and we won’t live forever.

Debt: Maybe you have student loans. Maybe you’re paying off your car. Maybe you have some credit card debt. Not all debts are forgiven when you die. Depending on the type of debt, the state you live in, and whether or not the loan is cosigned, your family could be responsible for that money. And, if you don’t have any debt, what about funeral

costs and final expenses?

Protect loved ones: You don’t want your parents and your family to be saddled with your debt if something happens to you. So why not make sure they won’t be? It’s easy. It’s affordable. It’s what Knights do.

On a budget? Young Adult Insurance is affordable. How affordable? Really affordable. The amount you pay is based on your age and medical history, but you could get $25,000 of coverage for as little as $1 a week.

Young Adult Insurance is quick and easy. It’s an annual, renewable term insurance product, that renews each year, up to age 70. It’s designed with Knights ages 18 through

29 1/2 in mind, to maximize affordability and flexibility.

There’s an advantage to buying Catholic. You get the comfort of knowing that your money is going to an organization that performs tremendous works of charity, that stands resolutely behind the Church, and that conducts its business in an unapologetically Catholic way, with strict rules on ethics and investments. Let’s face it, you are going to die. Hopefully not soon, of course! But what if you do? What will happen to those you love? Would you protect them if you could? You can call me or go online at kofc.org/youngadultins to learn more and even get a quote. God bless you all. VIVAT JESUS!

From The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson

As Pope Francis reminded us, these saints refused to be overwhelmed by the terrible events of the 20th century. For them, faith was more powerful. They were not afraid to “open wide the doors to Christ” by opening the Second Vatican Council and by bringing its message throughout the world. During the 26 years of St. John

Paul II’s pontificate, our Order had unprecedented opportunities to cooperate with him in this task. One of our most enduring pastoral initiatives was the establishment in 1988 of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. Therefore, it was heartening to hear Pope Francis say during the canonization

Mass: “St. John Paul II was the pope of the family. He himself once said that he wanted to be remembered as the pope of the family. I am particularly happy to point this out as we are in the process of journeying with families toward the synod on the family. It is surely a journey which, from his place in heaven, he guides and sustains.”
