Thomas Casey will be making his 16thswim this year to raise money for peoplebattling cancer.

Casey, 57, flies to his hometown ofBridgeport, Connecticut each summer toparticipate in the annual SWIM Across theSound — a 15.5-mile swim marathonstretching from Port Jefferson, New York toBridgeport — helping to raise $2.5 millioneach year.

It wasn’t until 2012, though, that hefound out that he also is dealing with thedisease.

When he was diagnosed with Stage IVrenal cell carcinoma — the most commonform of kidney cancer — it came withoutwarning.

The Lutz resident said there was “no his-

tory of cancer” in his family.He was diagnosed shortly before he was

scheduled to make the trip to Bridgeport. “Six weeks before the event, I went to

the doctor’s (office) because I was havingpain in my left side, and I found out I had di-verticulitis, and he said, ‘Oh, and by the way,your left kidney is filled with cancer,’” Caseysaid. “Being told you have cancer, everybodysays the same thing: ‘It’s like you got hit by afreight train,’ and it’s true.”

Casey acknowledges it’s a strange feeling— to know he is the only member of hisfamily to be stricken with the disease.

“I’ve got three brothers and a sister withno cancer,” he said. “I’m the only one...out ofmy family that does any kind of (cancer)fundraising, and I get it. But, I don’t take itthat way, and I never say, ‘Why me?’ I don’t

Swimming against all odds

Whether they’re supporting young girlsthrough scholarships to Space Camp, orhonoring women pilots who served inWorld War II, there’s an organization ofwomen that supports the joy of flying in allof its forms.

The group, which calls itself The Ninety-Nines Inc., got its start in 1929.

It began when some female aviatorswanted to have to a long-distance race, saidMarilyn Shafer, of Land O’ Lakes, who is amember of the Florida Suncoast Chapter ofthe group.

“It was supposed to start out inCalifornia and go over the mountains,”Shafer said.

“The men didn’t want the women doingthat because it was too dangerous forwomen to be able to get over mountainssafely,” Shafer said.

The women decided: “We’re going to doit anyway.”

Through the race, the women discoveredhow fantastic it was to have the support ofeach other, and they decided to form an or-ganization of female aviators.

“They sent out formal letters to every li-censed woman pilot in the United States. Iwant to say there was about 129, and 99 ofthem replied,” Shafer said.

They tossed around some names.In the end, they chose to honor the

women who wanted to be part of the neworganization. So, they called themselves TheNinety-Nines.

Amelia Earhart was the group’s first pres-ident.

Over time, the group has spread itswings — substantially. It’s now an interna-tional organization with about 4,900members, Shafer said.

“Our mission is advancement in aviation,through scholarship, education and support,

while we keep in mind where we started —our history,” Shafer said.

The Suncoast chapter includes a wideswath of territory, including Pasco County

and going from Crystal River to Sarasota,from Ocala over to Winter Haven.

A lawsuit shuttered Hot Rods CountryBBQ in 2013.

Two weeks ago, the quirky Lutz restau-rant, locally famous for ‘swamp bat’ and hotsauces, met the wrecking ball.

County records show the propertychanged hands in December 2015 whenSunset Livingston LLC bought Hot Rodsfrom Champor Corp Inc., for $525,000.Winter Park-based Alton Lightsey is listedas the registered agent for SunsetLivingston; Lutz real estate broker Jerry

Shaw is manager.Plans are to build a new restaurant with

an outdoor patio. The as-yet-unnamed restau-rant will serve beer and wine, and couldhave a few barbecue items.

Co-owner Jerry Shaw said, “It’s going tobe home-cooked, family style food.”

The beer and wine license received ap-proval in January.

Next comes settling on a restaurantname, drawing up construction plans, andgetting the building permits, Shaw said.

No ribbon cutting is set, but Shaw hopesto open the restaurant within six months orso.

“It’s a matter of getting the drawingscompleted and approved,” he said.

Hot Rods became legendary in Lutz forits offbeat menu items and rustic décor.

It opened in 1998. A lawsuit over debtled to the restaurant’s closure in May 2013.

Rod Gaudin started Hot Rods with a bar-becue pit, next to a country store he had atSunset Lane and Livingston Avenue. He laterconverted a wood-frame house into therestaurant. Customers walked onto theporch and opened the front door with awater-spigot handle.

Two task forces are grappling with criti-cal decisions on the future of State Road 54and State Road 56.

The final meeting of the West Task Forcewas scheduled for March 28, after TheLaker/Lutz News’ press deadline.

The East Task Force is scheduled to meeton March 31 at 5:30 p.m., at RasmussenCollege.

Eighteen transportation alternatives forthe state highway corridors are expected tobe whittled down to five alternatives, alongwith a no-build option.

The Pasco County Metropolitan PlanningOrganization is the sponsoring agency forwhat is a three-part review of how to ad-dress growing transportation needs on oneof Pasco County’s busiest thoroughfares.

The second phase of the review will be a“drill down” into the selected alternatives,said James Edwards, transportation planningmanager for the MPO.

The goal is to focus on options that ap-pear reasonable and feasible, Edwards said.

But, the next phase likely won’t getunder way until mid- or late-summer.

The task forces will remain in place, butEdwards said there will be additional publicmeetings in the second phase to gatherinput from the community at large.

The task forces had the first of threemeetings for each group in September.

The West Task Force focused on StateRoad 54 from U.S. 19, in west Pasco, to U.S.41 in Land O’ Lakes. The East Task Forcelooked at State Road 54/State Road 56, fromU.S. 41 to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, east ofInterstate 75.

Citizens Advisory Committee, local cham-bers of commerce, community leaders,developers or their representatives, and resi-dents from east and west Pasco.

In preparation for the upcoming meet-ing, task force members completed surveysgiving their views on the 18 proposals.

Much of the East Task Force discussionhas centered on the intersection of StateRoad 54 and U.S. 41, where state highwayofficials are proposing to redesign StateRoad 54 as a flyover crossing above U.S. 41.Toll lanes also are being considered.

Some favor the design, but others strong-ly oppose the plan as harmful to thebusinesses that could be displaced.

“I just want to see them stay at grade asmuch as possible,” said Sandy Graves, chair-woman of the East Task Force and a memberof the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

At a prior meeting, some task force mem-

bers pushed for at-grade solutions andgreater use of frontage roads to ease conges-tion at the intersection.

Suggestions also have been made thatthe CSX railroad tracks could be adapted forcommuter stops.

All options are being looked at, includingpublic transit, Edwards said.

About $150,000 in federal grants fundedthe initial phase, but the cost could doublefor the next phase.

Edwards said the county hopes to sharecosts with the Florida Department ofTransportation.

“It’s a state highway,” he said. “What we’redoing will benefit DOT.”

But, final decisions are a long way off, andpresently no construction funds are available.

“There’s time to sit back and reflect,”Graves said. “It’s important to get State Road54 and U.S. 41 correct.”

A ribbon cutting in August 2015 signaledthe completion of a $2.4 million makeoverthat added new ball fields, a concessionbuilding with restrooms, two shelters, newparking lots and a remodeled patio.

And now, at 7 p.m., on the first Friday ofevery month, families again can grab blan-

kets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets for anevening with their favorite Hollywood stars.

The April 1 feature is “Shrek the Third,”the last installment in the adventures ofShrek, Princess Fiona and Puss ‘n Boots.

The movies are hosted by the Land O’Lakes Community Center and the nonprofitHeritage Park Foundation.

The movie screenings have been upgrad-ed from an inflatable giant screen to aJumbotron, with crisper, sharper images.

“It’s a good family thing to do,” said SandyGraves, the foundation’s president. “It takesadvantage of the open space there, withoutbeing sports oriented. It’s a nice little venue.”

On average, Pasco County residents areslightly healthier than they were last year.

Out of Florida’s 67 counties, Pasco ranks37th in health outcomes, according to theUniversity of Wisconsin’s 2016 CountyHeath Rankings & Roadmaps tool.

That’s four spots better than the county’sranking last year, when it came in at 41st inthe state.

The rankings are a broad measure sum-marizing county residents’ health status andquality of life.

Comparatively, Hillsborough Countyranked 28th in health outcomes in the lasttwo years.

The main reason for the rankings jumpcan be linked to improvements in the “qual-ity of life” indicator, said Mike Napier, PascoCounty’s health officer.

The county leaped from 45th to 24th inthe “quality of life” category, which consistsof four elements — percentage of residentsin poor or fair health, number of poor physi-cal health days per resident, number of poormental health days per resident and lowbirth weight percentage.

Napier noted county residents have re-ported “feeling better than in the past.”

“Part of good health is people feel good,”the health officer said. “That may not meanthey’re as healthy when you look at theirblood work or all the things they should be,but if you feel healthy, that’s definitely agood sign.”

Napier hopes the county can rise intothe “20s” or the top third of the health out-comes ranking by 2020.

To reach that goal, Napier said the de-partment is focusing on creating betteraccess to care—like a mobile dental bus —and decreasing the prevalence of chronicdiseases, such as smoking and obesity.

“The big overarching issues are access tocare and chronic disease,” he said. “Then youdrill down into that a little bit—smokingcontinues to be a concern that we havepeople working on, on a daily basis. Obesitycontinues to be a problem for Pasco, as well

as the nation. Obesity is just a symptom.There are a lot of factors that go into obesi-ty, like getting people to eat healthier, andget physical activity.”

According to the rankings, the percent-age of adult smokers in Pasco decreasedfrom 26 percent in 2015 to 17 percent thisyear. However, adult obesity (Body MassIndex of 30 or more) increased slightly, from29 percent to 30 percent.

In an effort to make the county’s roughly485,000 residents “healthier,” Napier’s de-partment is working to create collaborativeefforts with “nontraditional” partners, suchas local chambers of commerce, rotaryclubs and private businesses.

Napier hopes these partnerships willhave a greater “collective impact” on thecommunity in raising awareness about thenegative effects of smoking, promoting bet-ter health through healthier eating andperhaps by instituting more exercise op-tions, such as building more bike paths.

“A lot of us are working on the samethings, but we don’t always talk to eachother about those same things, so we’re try-ing to bring groups together that areworking on common problems,” Napiersaid. “It’s organized a little better, so we’re all

While the health department is trying todo its part to raise the wellness profile ofPasco residents, Napier pointed out that itwill take collaboration and buy-in to achievethe desired results.

“If we get into the 20s ranking, it will bebecause the community came around theidea, and we collectively made that happen,”Napier said.

The 2016 health outcome ranking forFlorida’s 67 counties was recently released.The measure focuses on a county resident’saverage length of life and quality of life.

Delivering help for the vulnerableKiddy Up Ranch was the charitable organization for the month of February for the offices ofPasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano. Kiddy Up Ranch is an equine therapy program forchildren and veterans with disabilities. The therapeutic ranch uses a nationally known pro-gram called ‘Horseboy’ to help children with a wide range of disabilities. The ranch alsotreats veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions related to militaryservice. Mike Fasano, center, made a check presentation of more than $9,300 to Kiddy UpRanch, the funds raised through the hard work of the tax collector’s staff and the donationsof the community.

Eggs are an excel-lent nutrient-richfood that also are areasonably pricedsource of protein.

Over the years, advice about eggconsumption has changed. Newertesting has proven that eggs containless cholesterol than once believed.

Consumers who have been advisedby their doctor to limit intake to onlythree “visible” eggs a week, most likelyhave heard they can now enjoy four.

Of course, recommended intakeand actual consumption can vary. Theaverage American consumes approxi-mately five shell eggs a week, and thatdoesn’t count for “invisible” eggs con-sumed in other egg products.

Changes in lifestyles have led to adoubling of egg consumption over thepast 20 years, as more women haveentered the work force and people, ingeneral, have had less time to cook.

How to boil eggs• Place large, eggs in a saucepan (Besure they are not cracked; also, to helpwith peeling later, pierce the large endof the egg with a needle or tack)• Fill the pan with water approximately1-inch above the top of the eggs. Donot add salt.• Bring to a rolling boil. • Cover pot, turn off heat, and let sit onburner for 15 minutes. Add three min-utes, if eggs are extra large; subtractthree minutes if the eggs are small ormedium.• Drain pot. Add ice and cover withcold water. Let sit/chill before peeling,or remove and place cooked eggs inrefrigerator to peel later.

DIRECTIONS:• Prepare pie crust (if using refrigerated prod-uct).• Cook spinach in microwave and drain well incolander/on paper towel.• Toss shredded cheese and flour in bowl. Addspinach, milk, eggs, bacon, pepper, and mixwell.• Pour into pie crust and bake at 350-degreesF., for approximately one-hour (baking is donewhen a knife inserted in center, comes outclean). the cancer had spread to his arms, where tu-mors were virtually breaking the bones inhalf.

With the help of Dr. David Cheong, an or-thopaedic oncologist, Casey had bothtumors removed. To reinforce the upper-armbone, known as the humerus, in both ofCasey’s arms, the doctor inserted two 10 ½-inch plates to provide both mechanical androtational stability.

“Humeral shaft tumors can be particular-ly devastating because they run the lengthof the bone,” said Cheong, a surgeon withOrthopaedic Associates of West Florida inClearwater.

“Patients generally need extensive thera-py to regain normal function,” the surgeonsaid.

However, Casey was a rare case.The Lutz resident’s recovery went so

well so quickly that he is able to swim amile (72 lengths) three to four days a week.

“The doctor that has rebuilt me is totallyamazing. I can not thank Dr. Cheong andthe other professionals enough that haveworked with me,” said Casey, who’s alreadybooked his trip for the 2016 SWIM Across

the Sound event.“I don’t know if any other person could

have done what he did. ...For what he’sdone for me, I am totally, wholeheartedlygrateful.

“If you see me, you would not believethat I have these rods in my arms, and amstill able to swim and raise money for thefoundation up there,” he said.

While he knows the clear cell carcinomais still in his body and “isn’t going any-where,” Casey uses swimming as a copingmechanism.

“You think, and you kind of dream whenyou’re in the water. I think a lot aboutwhat’s coming up,” said Casey, who’s been aswimmer for more than half his life. “I can’twork anymore; the one thing I can do isswim. Not to be able to swim anymorewould probably upset me.”

According to Dr. Cheong, it’s importantfor cancer patients like Casey to have an ac-tivity where they can focus their energy.

“I have always known Thomas to be ahighly motivated individual with goals andaspirations to beat cancer and maintain an

active lifestyle,” thesurgeon said. “I be-lieve that this attitudeis the single most im-portant aspect to apatient’s recovery andsuccess.”

Casey also puts iton himself to speakto others about thedeadly disease. Hesaid that having open

discussions about cancer has helped himdeal with it.

“I don’t like sitting at home all day. I tryto do things, but I don’t let this (cancer) de-press me at all,” Casey said.

Casey has had radiation three times, buthas never undergone chemotherapy.

Casey acknowledges that with Stage IVcancer, “the worst is yet to come.”

But, he doesn’t let the thought disturbhim.

“Technically I should be dead now. But,it’s not killed me yet, and I keep fighting it,”he said, noting the typical life expectancy istwo years for someone with his type of can-cer.

What bothers him most is seeing chil-dren who have cancer, Casey said.

“I’ve lived 57 years and these children,basically, have not lived,” Casey said.

The chapter has roughly 60 members, in-cluding commercial pilots, military pilots,general aviation pilots and student pilots.

The group sponsors two scholarships ayear for girls, in grades four through six,who would like to attend Space Camp. Thisyear’s deadline for applications is April 2.

The chapter also is involved in other edu-cational activities.

“We just finished a Girl Scout AviationDay over at Clearwater Air Park. Girl Scoutscame in. We had different stations. They gotto build an airplane. They got to set off rock-ets,” Shafer said.

The girls also had a chance to learnabout experimental airplanes and to seehow an airplane is built.

Besides all of that, they were able toclimb into an airplane, put on the head-phones and have their photo taken whilethey were sitting at the controls, Shafer said.

Every year, the chapter honors membersof the Women Airforce Service Pilots, also

known as WASPs, at the annual Fun ‘n SunInternational Fly-in & Expo, an event inLakeland.

The number of WASPs is dwindling,Shafer said.

“They were the women who served dur-ing World War II. They flew airplanes, trailinga target for the men on the ground to prac-tice live ammunition training in shootingthings out of the sky,” she said.

They delivered newly built airplanes tothe East Coast, so men there could use themin Europe,” she said.

“We have very few left. We try to bringeach of them that are interested, and a com-panion, and put them on Sun ‘ N Fun Radio.We have a luncheon for them, where theyfield questions,” she said.

This year the luncheon is on April 7.Besides supporting female aviators, mem-

bers of The Ninety-Nines have beeninvolved in creating air markings — to helppilots in the air to know where they are.

“They divided themselves up into differ-ent sections of the United States, and theywould climb up on barn roofs and paint the

name of the town on the barn roof.“Or, they would put up something on

the ground with a mark, to denote their lo-cation, if you saw it from the air,” she said.

They still do that kind of work at air-ports, she said.

“Our big thing is our compass rose. Wewill do (paint) a compass rose with the car-dinal points, North, East, South and West. It’spainted to magnetic north. It has to be ap-proved. It has to be gridded by the airportauthority,” Shafer said.

Shafer’s own fascination with aviationbegan very early.

“My dad was a Navy pilot and was killedwhen I was 5. He was taking up a plane fora test, and it crashed on takeoff.

“I’ve always been enthralled with air-planes,” she said.

She wanted to learn how to fly, but usual-ly she didn’t have the time or money, orboth, to pursue it.

“It’s not cheap to get a pilot’s license. It’s$5,000 or $6,000, depending on how dedi-cated you are and how fast you want to getyour hours in,” she said.

At age 50, though, she decided to go forit.

She’s delighted she did.“It’s absolutely wonderful. When you fly,

it’s so freeing. You have your headphoneson, and yes, you have contact with theground. But, you don’t have that cellphoneringing, and ‘Oh, I should be doing house-work …

“All you do is think about flying,” she said.She does regret one thing.She wishes she had joined The Ninety-

Nines sooner.“I thought I had to have my pilot’s li-

cense first to be able to join. And, that’swrong.

“You can join the Ninety-Nines as a stu-dent pilot, and there are scholarshipsavailable,” Shafer said. “The Amelia EarhartScholarship from our International Office inOklahoma — if you get that, it pays foreverything.”

Darin Kilfoyl has been on a tear this sea-son.

The Academy at the Lakes junior right-hander is sporting a 1.84 ERA with 45strikeouts in 19 innings pitched — statisticsbuoyed by an incredible performance onMarch 3, when the 6-foot-8 flamethrowerfanned 19 batters in a complete game, onehit shutout against Victory Christian(Lakeland).

“All my stuff was working,” said Kilfoyl,who once recalled throwing a one-hitter(which turned out to be a home run) inLittle League. “I was throwing really, reallyhard in that game...and the batters couldn’tcatch up to it.”

Equipped with a four-pitch arsenal —fastball, curveball, changeup and cutter —the rangy righty has the ability to keep eventhe area’s top hitters off-balance.

Despite having a sturdy assortment ofpitches, Kilfoyl powers the strike zonemainly with his fastball, which ranges from86 to 88 mph.

His pitch speed has jumped considerablysince his sophomore year, when inactivityand recovery from a broken leg led to hisprimary pitch topping out at “only” 79 mph.

“Before last season...I hadn’t done any-thing for a few months, so all my (pitching)mechanics weren’t how they were sup-posed to be,” Kilfoyl explained. “I went backto my pitching coach after the school sea-son last year and got everything back set. In

the summer, I was getting back into the low80s, and at the end of the summer, I wasthrowing mid-80s; it’s been going up since.”

His performances on the mound havestarted to catch the eye of several Division Icollege programs from all over the country.

Blue bloods like the University of Virginiaand the University of Florida have shown in-terest in the towering righty. Academicpowerhouses like Dartmouth University andStanford University are also intrigued byKilfoyl’s size, potential and GPA.

“They said they know that I can already

get so much better because of how big Iam,” Kilfoyl said about college coaches’ in-terest. “They also like that I have really goodgrades, so the academics will help theirteam GPA, or help me get more scholarshipmoney for school.”

His high school coach, JohnDiBenedetto, noted Division I coaches werefascinated by Kilfoyl’s stature and his abilityto further develop.

“He’s still extremely raw,” DiBenedettosaid. “He can grow; he’s going to get better.That’s the scary part about it. He’s finallystarting to grasp certain things...on themound, where he’s starting to thrive.”

Kilfoyl’s long stride and release pointfrom his 6-foot-8 frame makes it difficult foropposing batters to catch up to his pitchesor make solid contact. As opposed to short-er pitchers, Kilfoyl’s length allows him torelease pitches closer to home plate fromthe mound, causing throws to jump on hit-ters more quickly.

“When I was at the (University of)Virginia camp, coaches were saying how be-cause of my length and how weird the(pitching) angle was, my fastball — eventhough it was only about 84 or 85 when Iwas there —played out at 89 to 90,” Kilfoylsaid.

Currently, Kilfoyl is working to fine-tunehis accuracy, and improve his athleticismwith the hope of getting stronger to in-crease his velocity. He said coaches at theAcademy have given him tips along the waythat have helped him “a lot” in those areas.

This summer, Kilfoyl will have the oppor-

tunity to showcase his skills in travel ball.The pitching standout is set to play for theAtlanta Blue Jays, an elite travel club for 15year olds to 18 year olds.

The experience should buoy Kilfoyl’s de-velopment and help him become noticedby more college programs, especially sincehe plays prep baseball at a smaller school.

Since it’s inception in 2003, the travelclub, led by Anthony Dye and SteveLoureiro, has produced several first roundpicks in the MLB Draft, including TimBeckham (2008), Delino Deshields Jr. (2010)and Touki Toussaint (2014). According to itswebsite, 90 percent of Blue Jays’ playershave either received collegiate scholarshipsor signed to play professional baseball.

“Their (travel club) is different...becausethey have only one team per each agegroup,” Kilfoyl said, “because they want tofocus on those players and get those playersto be the best they can be, whereas other(travel clubs) will have multiple teams fortheir different ages.”

Kilfoyl is also a standout basketball play-er for the Academy (9.1 points per gameand 7.8 rebounds per game in 2015), butsaid he prefers America’s pastime, knowinghis college future is likely tied to the lattersport.

“Baseball has the edge. I feel a lot moreconfident, and I feel I know the game ofbaseball much better than basketball, be-cause I started basketball later,” said Kilfoyl,who’s major growth spurt occurred after hestarted high school. “Baseball is just who Iam and what I excel at.”


A summer trip to Hawaii has become anannual tradition for the Sunlake High varsitycheer team.

From June 22 to June 29, Sunlake cheercoach Pennye Garcia and five of her cheer-leaders will participate in the 15th annualCheer Hawaii USA Summer Invitational atthe University of Hawaii.

Coach Garcia will be joined in Oahu bySunlake cheerleaders Taylor Broderick,Lauren Gobea, Maddie Frazee, Hailey Parksand Mikiah Peeples.

About 100 cheerleaders from all 50states are selected to participate in the pres-tigious camp each year.

Since 2006, Garcia has sent at least fiveof her cheerleaders — at every school she’scoached — to the weeklong college-prepcheer camp. She is one of just eight coachesthat will be attending to provide additionalinstruction and guidance.

Each year, Cheer Hawaii focuses on de-veloping four main competitivecheerleading areas: cheer motion and spirit,dance, stunting and leadership skills.

Typically, nominations for the camp areopen to current high school sophomoresand juniors that exhibit certain qualitiessuch as basic cheer skills, leadership abili-ties, a positive attitude, and a desire to learnand improve.

Sunlake senior Amanda Slozer, who at-tended the camp last year, said theweeklong affair benefits cheerleaders whoaspire to be team captains and role models

for younger teammates.“It’s a really good experience,” she said

about the camp. “I had a good time.”With a limited number of spots, Garcia

opts to nominate cheerleaders that haveshown her leadership-like qualities duringtheir career at Sunlake.

“I choose the ones...that show me indi-vidual characteristics that I would be proudof to send to Hawaii to represent our skills,”said Garcia, the 2016 East Pasco Coach ofthe Year. “If they have any disciplinary is-sues, they probably won’t get selected, andthey know why.”

With camp instructors such as Penn

State’s Curtis White, both high school cheer-leaders and their respective coaches learnabout advanced-level techniques and cheersthey can take back to their prep squads.

“Coach White brings his male cheerlead-ers and teaches everyone how to coedstunt,” Garcia said. “They all are collegecoaches that come in and teach high schoolshow to do sideline cheers and chants.”

Garcia added that Sunlake has altered itsentire cheer format based on what they’velearned at Cheer Hawaii, aligning theirsquad to perform cheers similar to some ofthe premier Division I cheer programs.

“It has been really beneficial for us in

competition and for sidelines,” Garcia said.The results at Sunlake speak for them-

selves. This past season, the Seahawks hadthe highest scoring average in Pasco County— 74.51— and finished third in the Class1A Small Division FHSAA (Florida HighSchool Athletic Association) state finals. In2014, Sunlake won the Class 1A MediumDivision state title.

According to Garcia, the weeklong campalso benefits high school cheerleaders whohave aspirations of cheering in college, byteaching them the steps needed to makethat drastic leap.

“There’s a lot of Cheer Hawaii kids thatgo on to cheer in college, and they get a lotof pointers from them,” she said.

Additionally, high school cheerleadersand coaches alike learn several positive rein-forcement techniques to use during theseason. For example, after every practice,the Sunlake cheer team will do an activitycalled ‘Celebrations and Reminders,’ whereteammates will ‘celebrate’ each other’s ac-complishments— like a perfect stunt inpractice — and provide ‘reminders’ of whatthey need to do for their next practice.

Garcia noted the activity is beneficial forempowering her team.

“It’s kind of like a ‘grab you, hug you’type of thing,” she said, noting that team-mates remember each other’s kind words toone another. “It’s just a positive way to sayeverything.”

For Sunlake, the camp kicks off the sum-mer season, and serves as a kick-start intrying to remain as one of the top competi-tive cheer teams in Pasco.

Cyclists from across the nationmade the trek to PascoCounty to ride in the GranFondo National Championship

Series, which began and ended in SanAntonio, on March 26.

The event is one of eight across the na-tion as part of the cycling series.

The Gran Fondo Florida race had 35-mile, 55-mile and 100-mile routes.

Unlike a ‘start to finish’ race, each routehad timed segments at specific mile mark-ers.

The cycling route is 100 miles, but thereare also 35-mile and 55-mile routes for lessavid riders.

While much of Florida is synonymouswith flat roads, the bike race travels alongPasco County’s rural rolling hills, with cy-clists riding by horse farms and clear springsthroughout the scenic route.

The 100-mile course had nearly 3,000feet of cumulative elevation gain, accordingto Reuben Kline, president and race directorof the Gran Fondo National ChampionshipSeries.

The gran fondo format is “less con-tentious” than other road races, because iteliminates the “peloton dependency,” wherecyclists ride in a tight group, drafting off oneanother to conserve energy, Kline said, in aprevious interview with The Laker/LutzNews.

The event helps boost Pasco Countytourism.
