Taking Our UU faith to Work

    Arthur Thexton

Do we take our UU faith to our jobs?Should we? How can we do so in a waythat is spiritually satisfying to us, and re-spectful to others?

Arthur is a lawyer for the state of Wiscon-sin who also completed his seminary edu-cation to be a UU minister. He lives in

    Madison.

    Taking Our UU Faith Home

    Arthur Thexton

Do we leave our faith here in the buildingafter services, or do we take it home withus and try to embody our religious faith inour relationships with our families? Do weinsist that our children have a religious ed-

ucation and participate in the life of thecongregation? Are we respectful of ournon-UU family members, especially if theyare formerly UU? How does a non-creedalfree-thinkingfaith like Unitarian Universal-ism get modeled in the home?

    Dont forget our food basket

    located in the coat room!

Our choir is always open to folks who like to

sing. If you can, and will be a part of a fewgood folk, we need you for our choir

Commit 2 Respond: Working for Climate Justice

Commit 2 Respond was launched on September 21, 2014 as representatives of the Unitarian UniversalistsAssociation (UUA) and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) participated in the PeoplesClimate March in New York City.

The UUA and UUSC are collaborating with other UU groups, including the UU Ministry for Earth,UU College of Social Justice, and UU Ministers Association.

Recognizing that the worlds most marginalized and impoverished communities are likely to be the first

to experience the effects of climate and environment degradation, Commit2Respond is an initiative forclimate justice awareness and action, and envisions a future where the most vulnerable are protectedfrom these consequences.

UUs and all people of faith and conscience are invited to commit to respond in three action areas:

    Grow the climate justice movement

Advance the human rights of marginalized communitiesShift to clean and renewable energy

Individuals, families, small groups, congregations, and community organizations are all invited toparticipate. UU members and friends are urged to think in larger terms about the commitments we canmake to climate justice, sign on to those commitments by Earth Day 2015, and to follow on through theJune, 2015 UUA General Assembly.

Commit 2 Respond is setting the period between World Water Day on March 22, 2015, and Earth Day onApril 22, 2015 to focus on explicit commitments in the service of climate justice.

GLOBEEnvironment Committee discussion is underway regarding what could be done to raise aware-

ness or take action to further initiative efforts. The Committee will keep the congregation informed ofour progress. Members of our congregation are welcome to join with us in discussion and/or action inservice of the Commit2Respond goals.

For further information on the collaboration, progress, or to add your ideas, go to the websiteWWW.Commit2Respond.org

    Respectfully submitted,

Judi Northen, LUUF GLOBE Environment Committee

    GREEN TIPS

Many of us use salt to clear our walks, outdoor steps, and driveways thistime of year. Unfortunately its bad news for your pets, the environment and your

garden. Pets get salt on their paws which causes cracking, the corroding effectof salt on metal damages vehicles, its hard on concrete and wreaks havoc on

    your garden.

With spring melt all the accumulated salt ends up in our waterways, ad-

versely affecting the local wildlife. Here are some green living alternatives tochase away the ice woes.

    Organic Salt-free Deicer

Its a little pricier than salt, but this product will help to keep your walk-

    ways and driveways ice-free.

You can also opt for more economical products that simply provideimproved traction to avoid falls, such as:

    Kitty Litter

Be sure to use a natural / biodegradable type such as Yesterday'sNews (made from recycled paper and available in 5-, 15- and 30-

pound bags) to Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Clumping Litter

(consisting of corn fibers and baking soda in a 10.5-pound bag).

    Other readily-available options include:

    sawdust,

    shredded corn cobs,peanut hulls,

    gravel,straw, and

    wood chips.

The day-to-day life of our fellowship is the glue that holds our spiritual community together. Unitarian Universalism ap-proaches the more "secular" aspects of fellowship life with the same religious intent as it's worship. Our religious edu-cation classes, adult activities groups, community volunteerism and building facilities committees are essential aspects

of our spiritual work. We believe it is our deeds, not our creeds, which are most important.

Every day we have people helping the Fellowship in ways thatallow our community to thrive. Whether you are a board member,on a committee, you make coffee, do dishes, vacuum, shovelsnow, rack leaves, plan a garden, help coordinate a service or youdo one of the other countless tasks, the time and talents you share

is incredibly important for our Fellowship community. Please knowyou are immensely appreciated.
