LYSAGHT® fences are stylish, economical,strong and durable. And they’re easyto install and maintain.
Designed to Australian wind loadingstandards, LYSAGHT NEETALOK® cyclonicfences are available in standardheights of 1500 and 1800 mm. Theycan be installed on flat and slopinggrounds, and are complemented byaccessories.
This is a step-by-step guide for theselection and installation for NEETALOK®
cyclonic fences.
This publication covers LYSAGHT
NEETALOK fences which are designed forinstallation in the tropical cycloneregions as defined in AS 1170.2—1989SAA Loading Code, Part 2: Windloads.
We have a similar publication forinstallation of non-cyclonic fences usedin wind regions A and B (see map onPage 4).
NEETALOK fences are specificallydesigned not to fly apart during acyclone. This means they are muchsafer than standard fences.
However cyclonic wind conditions canbe so extreme that NEETALOK fencescannot be guaranteed to survive acyclone.
Gates and their installation must beengineered for each individualapplication.
NEETALOK is the superior steel fencesolution for cyclonic regions.

Selection of posts for NEETALOK
fencesThe panels of NEETALOK fences aresupported by brackets attached torectangular hollow section posts.
On sloping ground, NEETALOK fencescan be stepped, or sloped parallel tothe slope using NEETALOK rakingadaptors.
On stepped installations each panelmust have two posts. Adjacent panelson a level installation may share acommon post (Figures 4 and 5).
At the ends of a fence run and atsteps in height, the ‘free’ end of apanel is trimmed and stiffened by aNEETALOK standard fence post, fixed tothe fence rails (Figure 4).

Check the number and type of postsyou want. Mark them on a sketch ofyour fence site (Figure 4). You willneed to consider:
• The first post, in a fence run,that doesn’t form a corner;
• Intermediate posts;
• The configurations of posts atcorners (Figure 4);
• If the fence is to be stepped orsloped;
NEETALOK fence post materialsizesNEETALOK posts are rectangular hollowsteel sections.

If the ground is not all level, considerwhere the fence will be stepped orraked (Figure 5).
If some of the ground is level andsome sloping, or if the slope variesmarkedly, you might need posts ofdifferent lengths.
Standard post lengths are 2400, 2700and 3000 mm.

u Determine basic post lengths(Refer to Figure 6).
Basic post length = (Footing depth– 40) + (Height above ground)
Get the footing depth from Page 10,and height above ground from:
Height of post above ground =
A + B + D
Where:
A = Height of infill sheet (Figure 6)
B = 50 mm ground clearance (Figure 6)
D = If a stepped installation: heightof the step (Figure 5)
v Select standard lengths
Use the table below to select thelengths you need to order. Thestandard lengths are 2400, 2700 and3000 mm.

2 Wind region: Region D
3 Soil type: Firm earth
4 Fence height: 1800 mm
Solution
Footing required is: 250 mm diameter x1000 mm deep (Figure 9).
Depth of footings
Select your minimum footingdepthYour fence posts must be embeddedin concrete footings of adequate size.Footings must not be placed inuncompacted fill. All footings in thefollowing table are 250 mm diameter.The footings are suitable for all terraincategories and both fence heights.
Post capsInstall post caps on all fence posts togive the perfect finishing touch and toprotect against any sharp edges.Choose your post caps based on yourpost configurations and personalpreference. Post caps must be screwfixed to NEETALOK standard posts.

Mixing your concrete
Thoroughly mix ingredients: 3parts 20 mm blue metal; 2.5 partssand; 1 part cement. Add waterand mix well before use. Premixedconcrete (20 MPa min.) may alsobe used.
w Place the first postIf the ground slopes, start at the highend.
Place the first post in its hole, fill thehole with wet concrete and firm inplace. Use a spirit level to ensure thepost is vertical. Check that the top ofthe post is at the calculated height.
Contour the top of the concrete sothat water flows away from the post.
Be careful that concrete doesn’tcontact the posts or rails aboveground.
x Place remaining postsPlace the second post in its hole andengage a bottom universal rail withthe first and second post.
Chock the bracket at each end toalign it with the stringline.
For raked NEETALOK fences, tighten therake adaptor nut.
Concrete the post as describedabove.
Check that the post is vertical and atthe correct height (Figure 12).
Continue installation of posts andbottom rails for the remainder of therun.
u Layout stringlines to positionyour fenceStringlines mark the outside line ofyour fence posts (Figure 11), and helpto set your fence posts at a uniformheight.
Determine the exact location of yourfence and setup a stringlinesupported by pegs. Keep thestringline taught and set at 50 mmabove the ground. Place the pegs500 mm beyond the corners of thefence, so as not to obstruct the holes.
v Layout posts and dig holesMark the position of fence postsalong your stringline at centres thatsuit your fence type and lay the postsbeside the stringline.
A fence panel can be reduced fromthe nominal width, without cuttinginfill sheets, by the increments shownin Figure 10. Rails and lattices mustbe cut to suit a narrow fence panel.
Dig the holes using the hole sizesdetermined from Page 12. The depthof holes shown excludes the top soil.Check that the top of each post willbe at the correct height.

w Fixing infill sheets to rails
For all NEETALOK fences, fasten infillsheets, from one side, to both railswith screws at every rib (Figure 14).
u Allow concrete to dryWait for the concrete to dry beforeinstalling infill sheets. A minimum of24 hours is recommended
v Insert the infill sheets
Insert infill sheets into a bottomuniversal rail. Ensure that all sheetsoverlap correctly (Figure 13).
Insert a top universal rail between twoposts and over the top edge of theinfill sheets (Figure 10).
Place a rail support bracket to clampthe rail and fix it with four hex headscrews (Figure 10). If using rakingadaptors, tighten the nuts (Figure 10).

EnvironmentOur fences have good resistance toaccidental spillage of solvents, howeverthey should not be installed within onekilometre of marine, severe industrialor other corrosive environments.
Both freshwater and saltwaterswimming pools contain corrosivechemicals, and COLORBOND® pre-paintedsteel is not recommended for use inthese environments.
Fences must be installed clear of theground.
Post capsPost caps must be installed onto fenceposts to prevent water building upinside the post. LYSAGHT post caps are‘press to fit’ into the post.
MaintenanceMetal, timber & chemicalcompatibilityLead, copper, bare steel and greenor chemically-treated timber are notcompatible with this product; thusdon’t allow any contact of theproduct with those materials, nordischarge of rainwater from themonto the product.
Take care to avoid harmful chemicalscoming into contact with the fence—they include swimming pool or borewater, garden sprays, poisons,fertilisers and solvents. If there is anaccident, wash the fence immediatelywith fresh water.
If there are doubts about thecompatibility of products being used,get advice from our informationservice.
FastenersAll screws must conform to
AS 3566—1988, Class 3 or better.
Cleaning upIt is most important to sweep allmetallic swarf and other debris fromfence components at the end of eachday and at the completion of theinstallation. Failure to do this canlead to surface staining when themetal particles rust.
Be sure that the drainage slots in thebottom rails are clear.
Maintenance of your fenceMake sure that the posts and bottomrail of the fence are not in contactwith the ground and are kept free ofdirt and debris.
A regular hose down of your fence,at least at six-monthly intervals, willkeep the fence in good conditionand looking its best.
Storage and handlingKeep the product dry and clear ofthe ground. If stacked or bundledproduct becomes wet, separate it,wipe it with a clean cloth and stack itto dry thoroughly.
Handle materials carefully to avoiddamage: don’t drag materials overrough surfaces or each other; carrytools, don’t drag them; protect fromswarf.
Care of paintDo not touch up minor damage, suchas scratches, with paint. Minorscratches will not affect theperformance of your fence, becausethe coatings effectively protect anycut edges or scratches fromcorrosion.
CuttingFor cutting thin metal on site, werecommend a nibbler or power sawwith a metal-cutting blade becausethey produce fewer damaging hotmetal particles and leaves lessresultant burr than does acarborundum disc.
Cut materials over the ground and notover other materials.
