TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

    G. RAMANATHAN - 13Another filmwhich had melodious music composed by the

Tamil movie music charmer G. RamanathanwasSudharshanwhich was released in 1951. The back-story ofthis production is interesting and worth narrating at somelength.

The popular folk myth of the potter saint Gora Kumbhar ofPandaripur has been filmed in many languages, and more thanonce in Tamil. This version titled Sudharshan was made by thewell-known Madurai-based production unit of yesteryears,Rayal Talkie Distributors, in association with Jupiter Pictures.

In those days, there was an unhealthy practice in the southIndian movie world of a story being filmed by more than oneproducer simultaneously in a competitive spirit. The story ofthe Panduranga devotee Gora Kumbhar in Maharashtra wassimilarly used by S. S. Vasan and Jupiter Pictures with bothlaunching their productions almost simultaneously. Vasanwith his drive and dynamism brought out Chakradhari (1948)much earlier, which reaped a rich harvest at the box office, whileSudharshan was in production for a long time and was releasedonly in 1951.

This film had major stars P. U. Chinnappa, PasupuletiKannamba, (Yogam) Mangalam, Lalitha, T. S. Balaiah, D.Balasubramaniam, P. B. Rangachari, and C. K. Saraswathi inmajor roles with the singing star of Tamil cinema of the earlydecades Chinnappa playing the potter saint. The excellentactress Kannamba played his first wife while Mangalam ofYogam-Mangalam Sisters, played the potters second wife. Her casting has an interesting back-story!

Not many are aware that the iconic Classical Carnaticmusician M. L. Vasanthakumari was cast in this film as thesecond wife of the potter saint. For many reasons (which sherefused to divulge even to her good friends like this writer!), MLVopted out after some reels were shot and Mangalam wasbrought on board to play that role.

(MLVs only on-screen appearance was in Krishna Bhakthi(1948) in a royal court song sequence, where she sang thepopular Entha Vedukonthu O Raghava in raga SaraswathiManohari.)

The film was written by noted writer-director A. S. A. Samiand Elangovan, the first star writer of Tamil Cinema, with Samiwielding the megaphone. However, differences arose and SundarRao Nadkarni who had made the box-office bonanza Haridas(1944) for Rayal Talkie took over replacing Sami. Nadkarnialso took credit for the screenplay, which was actually writtenby Sami. The final product carried both their names as direc-tors.

Chinnappa, the singing star of the 1940s, played the lead roleand sang many songs, some of them becoming popular. Lyricswere by Papanasam Sivan and K. D. Santhanam while G.Ramanathan tuned the music.

Kannamba as the first wife was brilliant, proving to be aperfect foil for Chinnappa with whom she had acted in quite afew movies. Despite the cast, melodious music and the storylinedrenched in bhakthi, the film did not fare well because of itsdelayed release and paled into insignificance compared toChakradhari.

Regretfully, Chinnappa passed away at a young age beforethe film was released. Viewed today after more than half acentury, the film still sustains interest.

Master A. L. Raghavan (later M. N. Rajams handsomehusband and noted playback singer) played Lord Pandurangaand looked cherubic in that role.

There were quite a few songs in the film mostly rendered byChinnappa including Unnadiyil anbu vaithen KannaParamathma (Raga Maund), Damodara (Hindustani tune)andEnna seidaayo Appa (RagaSindhubhairavi),a hit

Lalitha played a professional dancer who tries to seduce thepotter. A song and dance number was filmed on her Unnaikandu mayangaatha. This song was a straight lift from theM.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathars song in Ashok Kumar towhich Kannamba dances. (More about this song later in theseries). In spite of impressive performances by Chinnappa andKannamba and melodious music by Ramanathan, the film didnot do well because it came too late in the day after Chakradharihad swept the box office in 1948.

However, for Ramanathan this film was a success for hismelodious music score - one more feather in his cap!

    LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Sir, I appreciate the efforts of the civicauthorities in re-laying the roads in theneighbourhood which were for a long time inbad condition. However, care is not beingtaken to ensure that the openings of thesewage manholes which are often found onthe middle of the road are also raised to thenew road levels. The manhole covers areoften found a few inches below the road level. This not only poses a risk to 2-wheeler riderswho can skid and fall while going over them, but also leads to the manhole covers gettingdamaged under the weight of the vehicles.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation to adviseits contractors to ensure that the manholecovers are also leveled to the surface whilerelaying roads. R. Shankar, WestMambalam, Ph: 94449 57893
