No respite from sidewalk encroachersdespite complaints to Corporation

Sir, Chennai continues to fight against vehicles scurrying orparking on footpaths. Efforts to curb this menace has hit a deadend as the Chennai Corporation’s newly launched onlinegrievance system has failed to redress the residents’ complaints.Since its launch in December, the Corporation claims to havereceived and resolved 200 complaints. B. Kannan, Secretary(T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association) had filed futilecomplaints about three sidewalk encroachments, namely asteel scaffolding blocking the footpath, a street name boardthat had been shifted from the road entrance next to a showroomand a permanent encroachment by a showroom that displaysitems on the pavement. Registering complaints with the zonaloffice has also not invoked any response. The Association hasalso filed a RTI petition with the Corporation to extractinformation on the measures taken by it to removeencroachments. The Corporation should take punitive actionagainst the encroachers if it has to find a long term solution tothe problem.—V.S. Jayaraman, Rangan Street, T. Nagar.

Inlets to storm water drains blockedby tar

Sir, A year ago, a storm water drain with sufficient inlets wasconstructed on Habibullah Road (T. Nagar). However, a coupleof months ago, the entire width of the road was tarred, blockingthe inlets to the drain. This led to heavy water logging during therains thereby defeating the very purpose of constructingdrains. Some months back, a storm water drain was constructedon Giri Road without providing any rainwater inlets. To add tothe problem, Corporation workers tarred the road including theslabs covering the drain. Is it any wonder that our roads getinundated after even a small shower? Gokulam Apt. residents object to shiftingof transformer

Sir, TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and DistributionCorporation) is proposing to shift the transformer and otherequipment located at the eastern end of Rangan Street, T.Nagar, to near Gokulam Apartments. As per the rules, theshifting/erection of major EB equipment should be done onlyafter obtaining consent from residents, if they are to be locatedvery close to a residential complex. The residents have alreadyfiled their objections with the concerned authorities. Furtherthere is an avenue tree at the proposed location which too wouldhave to be cut unnecessarily. Appeal for speed breakers at7th Avenue junction

Sir, There is an urgent need of speed breakers to slow downvehicles at the 3-way busy junction of 7th Avenue (AshokNagar), 27th Street (Ashok Nagar) and Balakrishna Street(West Mambalam). Ever since 10th Avenue was made one-way, motorists coming from T. Nagar and Saidapet are forcedto use the already busy 7th Avenue to reach Vadapalani. Thejunction has become very dangerous for pedestrians to crossas motorists do not slow down or stop. There are four majorschools in the vicinity and the students are put to greatdifficultly daily. When the woman was busyfilling up a form at the bank,Mathiyazhagan, who wasstanding next to her, unzippedher handbag, stole the cash,immediately deposited it in hisaccount and left the bank.

When Vijayalakshmi foundthat the money was missing,she filed a case with the police.When police checked the CCTVfootage at the bank, they foundthe man pocketing the curren-cy notes. From the time recor-ded in the CCTV footage, policegot the details of the transac-tion and traced Mathiyazha-gan.

Corporation officials saidthat the halls would have allthe basic facilities, includingair-conditioning, toilets, can-teens and ample parkingspace. It has also been pro-posed to price the tickets uni-formly at Rs. 25.

The theaters will have ad-vanced sound system and seat-ing capacity ranging from 100to 600, depending on the spaceavailability.
