Music for the movie ‘Udayanan Vasavadatta’ was composed byPapanasam Sivan and the up-and-coming music director C. R.Subburaman. The film had fifteen songs, out of which GNB sangseven in addition to a couple of duets. Those had, in fact, beencomposed for M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and some had evenbeen recorded by him, but the recording exercise was again gonethrough with GNB. But somehow the music did not jell and createdno impact.

And then GNB bade goodbye to movies. Even though he was morehandsome than most heroes of his day and sang well, he did not makean impact as a film actor. “He took direction well and, as we wentalong, he was improving as an actor. Actually I expected him tobecome a successful hero but somehow it did not seem to happen”,Ellis R. Dungan, who directed him in ‘Sakunthalai’, told this writer ina long chat in 1994.

A major drawback of GNB was his predominantly Brahmin accentwhich he could not shed in spite of his best efforts. With his looks, charm, singing talents and skills, GNB could have gone a long way inTamil Cinema but sadly he did not. Well, that’s the way the ballbounces in movies, and in life!

MLV - A HOMAGEMadras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari was born in 1928 into a

musical family. Her mother was Lalithangi, a noted musician of herday and father was Ayyasami Iyer, a scholar and teacher of music. Thus music was in her genes and she began to learn classicalCarnatic music even as a tiny tot. As an attractive lass sheaccompanied her mother in her concerts singing seconds (‘pinpaattu‘). In her teens she became the disciple of GNB and it was a turningpoint in her life and career. She imbibed all that was best in her guru’smusical genius and added her own to the inheritance.

(During the early 1990s, this writer made a two-part (60-minute)TV Serial on MLV, ‘Thiraivaanil Oru Isai Thenee!’ telecast byDoordarshan Kendra, Madras. It was very well received and wonmuch praise. In it, R. Krishnamurthy (her husband) and Srividya (herdaughter) spoke on camera about MLV with much emotion. V. N.Sundaram, P. Leela and Tamil film star G. Sakunthala (for whomMLV sang in Ellis R. Dungan’s hit and cult film ‘Manthiri Kumari’) alsospoke recalling their association with MLV.)

MLV was to have acted in M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar’s ‘comeback’- movie ‘Raja Mukthi’ (1948) which was made in Poona (nowPune). After Bhagavathar was arrested in December 1944 for hisalleged involvement in the sensational and historic Lakshmikanthammurder case, he underwent a 30-month term in prison and wasacquitted as ‘Not guilty’ in April 1947. Then he promoted his own filmunit ‘Narendra Pictures’ and the first film was ‘Raja Mukthi.’ MLVwent to Poona for acting but, for many reasons, she chose not to actand instead she took her bow as playback singer in this film. She sangduets with Bhagavathar and the songs became popular while themovie itself flopped in spite of its prophetic title.

MLV sang ‘ Kulakodi thazhaikka’(raga Ramapriya); ’EnnaAanandham’ (Simhendramadhyamam, duet with MKT);‘Santoshamaai anbar’ (duet with P. Bhanumathi); ‘Araro ’(Yamankalyani) and ‘Ingum angum’ (Madhyamaavathi, duet withMKT).

The lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and C. R. Subburaman wasthe music director. Unusually in this film there was a ‘song trainer.’That was Alathur Sivasubramaniam, one of the two famous AlathurBrothers. The director was the well-known filmmaker of 1930-1940s,Raja Chandrasekhar who had directed MKT in the hit film ‘AshokKumar’ (1941).

One of the immortal classical Carnatic music-based melodies ofTamil cinema is the evergreen hit song ‘Ellaam inba mayam’, sungas a duet by MLV and P. Leela in the film ‘Manamagal’ ( 1951)produced and directed by the cult-figure and comedian supremo, N.S. Krishnan.

Roadside eateries must follow hygienic practicesBureau of Indian Standards

(BIS) has announced guide-lines for roadside eateries andfast food shops in the countryand sent it to the National FoodSafety Authority. (MambalamTimes had carried a report onroadside eateries last week).

If implemented, street foodvendors will be forced to adoptbetter hygienic practices.

All mobile and fixed roadsideeateries will come under thepurview of guidelines under IS2492, the hygiene standard forrestaurants. Quality of rawmaterials for food preparation, transportation and storage offood items, locations of streetfood stalls, etc will be checkedunder the new guidelines. Cur-rently, street food vendors donot adhere to any guidelines orstandards for food safety. Many of them are situated neardrains and dustbins. Even thecooking oil is procured fromeateries which sell their usedoil to roadside vendors. And thefood is stocked in shabby con-ditions, putting at risk thehealth of consumers.

K Anbarasu (Deputy Direc-tor General, BIS, SouthernRegion) said that hygiene indensely populated areas is stilla challenge for health initia-tives. “The new guidelines andstorage rules for water, milk,

tea or coffee powder, fruits, vegetables and meat are ex-pected to bring an importantchange in street food opera-tions”.

“Kitchen utensils and cut-ting tools should be clean anddisinfected. Personal hygieneof vendors will also be checked.Use of newspapers for pack-aging will be stopped,” said aBIS official.

BIS officials said food inspec-tors from local bodies should

enforce these guidelines forthousands of such shops in thecities. However, senior officialsin the Chennai Corporationsaid there is a huge shortage ofmanpower in the Food Safetyand Control Department. “Weare short of staff to even con-duct inspections based on writ-ten complaints. Without ap-pointing adequate officers, itwill be difficult to enforce thenew guidelines,” said a seniorofficial.

In Chennai, a majority of thepoor depend on street food asrestaurants are beyond theirreach. Sumesh Jha, a con-struction labourer who hasbeen staying in Chennai forfour years, says he gets achicken biriyani for Rs. 35 froma street vendor in Egmore.“When I get Rs. 350 for a day’swork, how can I spend Rs. 100or 150 for a biriyani from arestaurant?” he asked. To those fellows like me who hate deathsentence as the lurking bestiality from thestone age, whether it is Surjeet Singh orSabarjit Singh who escaped the noose, a roundof rasagolla to the accompaniment of thebirds chirping at dawn is an energiser.

I love life so much that I can’t squash evena dirty cockroach stealing in through thebathroom drain cover to start a hundred pluscolony in my home.

When our TV media fell over each other togladden my heart with the news of Sabarjit’simminent homecoming after his Pak jail so-journ of dozens of years, all they perhapsheard was “Singh” and assumed that allSinghs in Pak jails will be exchanged for thebrave new world’s heroes like Kasab, the lonesurvivor of the killer squad. Well, somebodymade an ass of himself by emulating good oldShakespeare and asking himself “What’s ina name ? Sarabjit is as good or bad as Surjeet.”This mix up of killer names must have plungedthe Sarabjit family to the depths from thehope so artificially created. Do I hear somefame hunting lawyer smelling a juicy P.I.Lsuit against the TV and other news media forthe soap bubble hope that they created whilethe Pak chaps were laughing themselveshoarse and silly at the joke.

Whatever be the hangee’s name, he de-serves the commutation as an act of recom-pense and grace from Pakistan which, of late,is fencing with its Supreme Court. The gradu-ation from the rule of flaw to the rule of law,now that soldiers are not rulingPakistan, would turn would-be-Kasabs tosaner ways to earn a living, without follow theRoman hero Casca who plunged the daggerinto Caesar with the salutation, “Speak handsfor me”.

Sir, - Traffic in Postal Colony3rd Street, West Mambalam hasbecome chaotic. Buses plying onArya Gowda Road turn into PostalColony 3rd Street to reach AshokNagar and K. K. Nagar. Shareautos stop at the entrance of thestreet near the post-office.

People, especially senior citi-zens who come to the post-officeto collect their pension find itdifficult to cross the road becauseof the heavy traffic.

I request the transport authori-ties to make the road ‘One way’.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORChaotic traffic

I suggest that vehicles comingfrom Ashok Nagar and K. K.Nagar go straight to 7th Avenue,Ashok Nagar and turn into 2nd or1st street of Postal Colony andreach Ayodhya Mandapam to easethe flow of heavy traffic.

There have been quite a fewaccidents due to continuous flowof vehicles. Recently, an elderlywoman fell down when she failedto notice a vehicle turning fromLake View Road into 3rd Street. -Gemini Shyam, 102/194, LakeView Road, West Mambalam

Sir, - Of late more and moreprivate organizations, tourist taxioperators, textile showrooms andbeauty parlours are installing ‘Noparking’ boards in front of themain entrance of flat complexesand along fences. Even schoolsand places of worship are notspared.

Unauthorized ‘No parking’ boardsThis practice is rampant in West

Mambalam. The police should keep a close

vigil and initiate stringent actionagainst such acts. Meanwhile, flatowners can themselves removesuch boards. – R. Ramadurai,35/2, Chakrapani Street, WestMambalam

With work on grid system ofroads under the mega city develop-ment mission gaining momentumin various parts of the city, ChennaiCorporation commenced trainingfor all its engineers by creating amodel of a standard speedbreakeron the premises of Ripon Build-ings.

The model speedbreaker hasbeen constructed according to In-dian Roads Congress (IRC) stan-dards and all new speedbreakerswill adhere to them.

The civic body had identifiedover 400 speedbreakers for rede-sign by incorporating safety fea-tures following the death of StateCo-operation Minister Sellur K.

Corporation createsmodel speedbreaker

Raju’s son in a motorcycle acci-dent at a speedbreaker on NSCBose Road a few weeks ago.

Most of the identified speedbre-akers were found to be badlydesigned and not adhering to IRCstandards. Over 30 speedbreakerswere found to be badly designed inSholinganallur zone. In northernzones such as Tiruvotriyur, mostof the 30 identified speedbreakerswere found to be unauthorised.

Work on new speedbreakerswill start after the training ses-sions. The Corporation is likely tocommence identifying spots alongthe newly-developed road gridswhere speedbreakers are required.Report courtesy The Hindu

In a bid to crack down onadulteration of petrol and diesel, the Tamilnadu Government autho-rized officials of several depart-ments on July 17 to take actionagainst those involved in fuel adul-teration, hoarding and other re-lated malpractices.

Assistant Commissioners of theCivil Supplies Department, all of-ficials of the rank of Tahsildarsand above in the Revenue Depart-ment, all taluk supply officers, inspectors and above in the LabourDepartment and Deputy Superin-tendents of Police and above in thePolice Department are authorisedto initiate action against the fuelmafia under the provisions of theEssential Commodities Act andMotor Spirit and High Speed Die-sel (Regulation of Supply and Dis-tribution and Prevention of Mal-practice) Order. The order is theoutcome of a proposal sent by theCommissioner of Civil Suppliesand Consumer Protection Depart-ment in this regard.

Adulteration of petrol and die-sel, both at points of sale andduring transportation, is rampantacross the country as there areseveral close substitutes for these

Crackdown on petrol, dieseladulteration

fuels. While kerosene is the com-monly used adulterant for diesel, naphtha is mixed with petrol. Atopen market prices of these fuels, adulteration of petrol helps save 20per liter and diesel 15 per liter. Various surveys have shownthat much of the petrol sold throughoutlets is adulterated and has amuch lower octane level than thespecified 87%. Many customersbuy fuel only from select pumps, most often from outlets owned andoperated by petroleum manufac-turing companies. It is estimatedthat pumps selling adulterated fuelearn a minimum of Rs. 25,000 aday. A study conducted by aprivate agency a few years agoestimated that about 30% of kero-sene supplied through the publicdistribution system in the countryfor domestic use is diverted foradulteration of diesel andblackmarketing. Apart from wreck-ing engines of new generationvehicles, adulterated fuel is also adrain on the State’s exchequer as itloses on sales tax. Theft of fuelfrom supply tankers is anotherrampant menace on highways. This is done by local outlaws inco-ordination with lorry crew.
