Chapter 2. Operating Instructions

Chapter 2

OperatingInstructions

Fundamentals

The Operating Instructions section providesinstructions for each aspect of machine oper-ation.

It is the operator’s responsibility to follow allthe safety rules and instructions in the oper-ator’s manual.

If more than one operator is expected to usea machine at different times in the same workshift, each operator is expected to follow allsafety rules and instructions in the opera-tor’s manual. That means every new oper-ator should perform a pre-operation inspec-tion, function tests and a workplace inspec-tion before using the machine.

Setup

• Check that work area is suitable accord-ing to the details given in the Site In-spection / Machinery Selection sectionof Chapter 3.

• Follow the Setup procedures in theFunction Tests section.

Raising Platform for Use

1. Position the machine directly below thedesired work area. Make sure castorsare locked in position by firmly press-ing foot operated brake lever. (If cas-tors can spin on vertical axis the castorlock is not fully engaged.)

2. Insert stabilising legs into back of MiniMonkey Monkey Tower.

3. Lock stabilising legs into position withthe spring loaded leg pins at base of lad-der.

6. Raise platform above desired height bylifting from side of platform and slowly

lower. Platform will lock into positionresting on runglocks.

7. Check rung-locks are fully en-gaged. If locks are not engaged repeatsteps 5 to 14.

Climbing Ladder & Enter-

ing Platform

Before the ladder is climbed the followingchecks must be made each time:

• Check that the assembly is still correctand complete including stabiliser legs inposition.

• Check that ladder locks are locked intoplace.

• Climb ladder using rungs and built inhandles for handholds and maintaining3 points of contact at all times.

• Climb through spring loaded door ontoplatform.

The pre-use inspection also serves to deter-mine if any maintenance procedures are re-

quired. If damage or any unauthorized vari-ation from factory delivered condition is dis-covered, the machine must be tagged and re-moved from service. Repairs to the machinemay only be made by a qualified service tech-nician, according to the manufacturer’s spec-ifications.

Frequency of inspection

The pre-use inspection should be made at thefollowing frequency:

• After installation in any position (note:-this does not mean every time that theMonkey Tower is moved on site)

• After exceptional circumstances whichare liable to jeopardise the safety ofthe Monkey Tower or other work equip-ment.

• At suitable interval not exceeding every7 days.

Function Test

It is the responsibility of the operator to per-form a function test. The function test is avisual inspection performed by the operatorprior to each work shift. By following theorder laid out here the funtion test can beperformed whilst erecting a tower.

Operators Manual Present

Be sure that the operator’s manual is com-plete, legible and readily accessible by users.

Chapter 3. Pre-Use Inspection

Decals Present

Be sure that quick reference decal, ce badgeand stabiliser leg warning decals are legibleand in place.

Damage, Dirt, Missing Parts,Corrosion, Unauthorised Changes

Check the following components or areas fordamage, excessive dirt or contamination, im-properly installed or missing parts and unau-thorized modifications:

• Base components.

• Legs.

• Stabilizers.

• Ladders.

• Counterbalance cables (check for kinks, frays, abrasions).

• Pulleys.

• Cable attachments.

• Castors.

• Nuts, bolts and other fasteners.

Check the entire machine for:

• Dents or damage.

• Corrosion or oxidation.

• Cracks in welds or structural compo-nents, missing rivets.

Be sure that all structural and other criti-cal components are present and all associatedfasteners and pins are in place and properlytightened.

Stabiliser Leg Function

Check the following function on all four of thestabiliser legs:

• Soring-loaded pins slide in and out ofholes easily.

• stabilisers slide horizontally withoutundue force.

• Friction locks on upright hold uprightin position.

• Spring on friction locks function.

• Castors function correctly (spinningand locking into position - caster shouldnot spin around vertical axis whenlocked in position).

Door Function

Check that the spring-loaded door swingsback into position.

Lock Function

Check that the locks on the ladders are ingood condition and move in and out of posi-tion easily and that the bungey cables are ingood condition.

Chapter 3. Pre-Use Inspection

Site Inspection / Machin-

ery Selection

The site inspection determines if the work-place is suitable for safe machine operation.Workplace inspection should be performed bya competent person prior to moving the ma-chine to the workplace.

Be aware of and avoid the following haz-ardous situations:

• Low ground bearing capacity.

• Drop-offs or holes.

• Bumps and floor obstructions.

• Debris.

• Sloping surfaces.

• Unstable or slippery surfaces.

• Overhead obstructions.

• High voltage conductors.

• Inadequate surface support to with-stand all load forces imposed by the ma-chine.

Check that the Monkey Tower Mini is suit-able for the intended job i.e. is there suffi-cient height to reach the workplace, can theworkplace be reached from within the plat-form.

Wind Speed Measurement

The maximum windspeed that a freestand-ing Monkey Tower shall be used in is 17mph(beaufort force 4). The windspeed should

be checked at the beginning of work andrechecked if any changes in the windspeed arenoticed. The windspeed can be measured byuse of an anemometer measuring the wind-speed in two perpendicular direction. Alter-natively the beaufort scale can be used (Beau-fort force 4 is described by dust and loosepaper being raised and small branches begin-ning to move. For Beaufort force 5 branchesof a moderate size move and small trees inleaf begin to sway.)

Be aware that local windspeed conditions canbe higher than surrounding areas especially incases such as working between buildings, onthe corners of buildings, open ended buildingsetc.
