THE AVM STORY - 61

During the 1950-60s, there was a distinct trend in Tamilcinema of seeking story material from Bengal, the land of theNobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat ChandraChatterjee and such literary giants. Many Bengali stories, novels, plays and films were adapted for Tamil cinema. Indeed,in that period there were even ‘Bengali story brokers!’ hoveringround Madras studios.

‘Kula Deivam’ highlighted the joint family system, the needfor family unity and widow remarriage. Thus, it was a sociallysignificant film and met with success. Directed by Krishnan-Panju, it had S. V. Sahasranamam, Pandari Bai, S. S.Rajendran, Mynavathi and stage comedian V. R. Rajagopal. He made a splash and came to be known as ‘Kula Deivam’Rajagopal. For some years he was a top comedian but latersadly slid down the grease pole and faded away.

The film won a Certificate of Merit awarded by the Govern-ment of India. In 1957, Meiyappan remade it in Hindi as‘Bhabhi’ and it proved to be a phenomenal success.

While films in South Indian languages Tamil, Telugu andKannada were being steadily produced in his studio, Meiyappanset his sights in expanding into the larger and more lucrativeHindi film market. S. S. Vasan had already showed the way tothat market with his bonanza ‘Chandralekha’ in Hindi, and healso remade his Tamil movies into Hindi with much success.Madras was fast emerging as a Hindi film production centerand others in South India like Jupiter Pictures and PakshirajaFilms in Coimbatore and Modern Theaters in Salem toojumped into the stream. The lead was shown by Vasan andMeiyappan.

The invasion of the Hindi film market by South Indianproducers would have far-reaching consequences in the devel-opment of Indian cinema in many ways. Ever since moviesbegan in 1913, films made in Bombay and other film-makingcenters like Kolhapur, Calcutta, Poona and distant Lahore(now in Pakistan) had been screened extensively in south. When cinema began to talk Hindi in 1931 with Ardeshir Irani’shistoric ‘Aalam Aara’, the sprawling Madras Presidency andthe rest of South India became a vast and fertile market forHindi cinema. Movies produced by celebrated glittering namesof Hindi cinema such as Prabhat Pictures, Bombay Talkies,Ranjit Movietone, Rajkamal Kalamandir, New Theaters, SagarMovietone, and others were warmly welcomed in South India, and many of their movies enjoyed long runs in the south. MostSouth Indians did not understand Hindi but they saw the filmsmainly for the melodious music and catchy lilting songs and forthe story content. Singing stars like K. L. Saigal, PankajMullick, Noorjehan, Kanan Bala, Shantha Apte and otherswere as popular in South India as they were in the rest of thecountry. The box-office takings flowed in plenty from the southto Bombay and other centers. And for many long years it hadremained a one-way traffic!

Vasan changed all that, followed by Meiyappan. For the firsttime the flow was reversed and box-office collections nowflowed from the North to Madras! A historic achievementindeed! Even though many South Indian producers producedHindi films, the leaders were Vasan and Meiyappan.

After ‘Ladki’ (1953) Meiyappan did not venture into Hindicinema and he launched his second project only in 1956 with‘Bhai Bhai’. It was remake of the Tamil film ‘RatthaPaasam’(1954) which was, in turn, based on a successfulstage play with the same title. The Tamil playwright andscreenwriter was C. V. Sridhar - a person who subsequentlycontributed in good measure to Indian cinema as writer, producer and director of success and merit.

Chithamur Veeraraghava Sridhar, who created film historywith his melodramatic love stories in Tamil, Telugu, Kannadaand Hindi began his life as a clerk in a State Government office. He had written plays even as a schoolboy. One of his plays was‘Rattha Paasam’ which was staged by TKS Brothers withsuccess. This was later produced as a movie and Sridhar tookhis bow in cinema, the impressive beginning of a spectacularlysuccessful career in Indian cinema.
