NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

DEATH TO DEATH SENTENCEChief Justice P. Sathasivam of the Supreme Court of

India and his two companion Judges have, by denying therope to be the arbiter in cases where the killing of the felonis mandated by the cruel Indian Penal Code devised byIndia’s erstwhile conqueror England, done a greatintellectual, moral and human service to the holy Bharatrung in by our apostles of love, peace and spiritualism, which I hail as the best that the Supreme Court has donein its self-propelled journey of untrammelled delivery ofjustice.

Thank you, Chief Justice Sathasivam and your brotherJudges whohave upheld the right of the worst among us tolive. The Bench knew that the mind of man is unfathomableand nobody can kill another for the quirks of the latter’smind.

So, killing through the judicial routefor self-aggrandisement, for love, hate or sheer joy of war, specialised by Hitler, Attila the Hun and Truman (who seta world record of about a million with his two atom bombsthat ended the Second World War) stand on the samepodium which Sathasivam and Sadanand discern asequal.Given the chance, had I been appointed a Judge ofthe Madras High Court, I would have long ago abolished thedeath sentence. Life is meant to enjoy, not to destroy.

VADAPALANI

Sir, I regularly visitJeeva Park with my chil-dren and a couple of daysago I was shocked to seea 5-foot-deep trenchwhich was left uncov-ered and not barricadednear the children’s playarea.

It poses a grave dan-ger to the children whocrowd the play area.

I appeal to the con-cerned authorities to im-mediately close thetrench or barricade theportion to avoid any un-toward incident. – M.S.

Trench in children’s play area posesdangerSir, We tirelessly complain and quickly point fingers at civic

authorities on various issues, some justifiable and some exag-gerated.

At the same time, one should also look at our own lack of civicsense and irresponsible behavior, before criticizing the authori-ties!

Here is one glaring instance. We complain of the poor conditionof the roads but we are not prepared to put up with the difficultyfor even a few hours as they are being laid. The surface of PinjalaSubramanian Street was recently concreted. If one observesthe road near the entrances to houses, in a number of places deeptyre marks are visible which were obviously made by thevehicles belonging to the residents while the surface was stillwet! Does it not show our own disregard for public property?

In my street, residents living in flats compete with the slumdwellers in throwing garbage “around” dust bins! Who is going toeducate them?

I appeal to my fellow denizens to follow the civic codes inhelping the authorities to create a better environment for living.– S. Rajagopalan, Pinjala Subra-manian Street, T. Nagar

Keeps count of your LPG refills to avoid getting cheatedSir, We received a complaint from one of our residents about the inordinate delay in the supply of LPG refills by the

Indane TUCS located on Kuppaiah Chetty Street, West Mambalam. When our association member met theconcerned official at IOC, he immediately called the concerned agency and was told that the delay was on account thatthe refill was processed under the non-subsidized category.

When we said this was incorrect, the official checked the refill details of the consumer online from April 2013 to dateand found that a total of 9 refills had been supplied under the subsidized category. In reality, the complainant had orderedonly 3 refills during the said period and we produced the receipts to prove the same. It was clear from the above factsthat the agency had followed the consumer’s usage pattern and had illegally sold the subsidized refills meant for herto someone else.

We then lodged a written complaint with IOC. When we next met the officials of TUCS in its head office, heimmediately realized the gravity of the situation and arranged for immediate delivery of the refill at subsidized rateand also assured that all future deliveries too would be made at subsidized rate. I am writing this letter to enlightenconsumers and advice them to keep a count of their refills and also preserve the receipt so as to put at naught anyfoul play by the agencies. I also appeal to the oil companies to keep a tab on the agencies to ensure that the dealingswith the consumers are just and fair. – Motilal Street Residents’ Welfare Association, Old No. 31, New No. 57,Motilal Street, T.
