After the city’s rain-fed pot-holes, the transition to smoothroads within the campus of theThiagarajar College of Engi-neering (TCE) is more than atreat. The man behind the tar-topped tracks is known asMadurai’s ‘Plastic Road Man’.He is as much at ease when heexperiments with chemicals inthe science lab as he is under apeepul tree teaching studentsslokas from the Bhagavad Gita.

But R. Vasudevan (Deanand Head of the ChemistryDepartment) is on a mission.“Clean India” is his campaign. He says, “I want to change thegeneral garbage culture of thepeople.” After a decade’s hardwork and persistent efforts, hissimple invention of a technol-ogy to use plastic waste to lay

Madurai’s ‘Plastic Road Man’

roads, patented by TCE, finallygot a shot in the arm last monthwith the Union Governmentapproving its wider applica-tion.

Following a special gazettenotification of the Ministry ofEnvironment & Forests datedFebruary 4, 2011 directing allmunicipal authorities across

the country to “encourage useof plastic waste by adoptingsuitable technology such as inroad construction...” he waselated. “This is the first respon-se of its kind to waste manage-ment,” he said.

It was in 2002 that Vasu-devan laid the first plastic tarroad within the TCE campus. It remains intact.

His interest in the subjectbegan when he heard a doctoron a TV program mistakenlysaying that plastic ‘dissolved’in water bodies and causedpollution.

“It set me thinking … afterall, plastic’s raw material ispetroleum only. I immediatelycame to my lab and startedmixing some waste plastic inheated bitumen (tar).” And theidea was born.

When the then President A.P. J. Kalam visited TCE in2001, the professor presentedhis project on the good bondingand binding factor of plasticand its potential use as a coat-ing over pebbles for layingroads. He recalls, “Kalam toldme, ‘one day your test will be-come the convention. Don’tworry if people don’t approveor get convinced. You just doyour work at your place. As asample, lay a plastic road

within your campus first. Oncethe results are there to see, people will come automati-cally’.”

Kalam’s words proved pro-phetic. With full support fromthe college correspondentKarumuttu T. Kannan, Vasu-devan laid the first 60-ft-longplastic road within the cam-pus. Getting his technologypatented was the next hurdle. After four years and numer-ous visits to the Chennai of-fice, the technology was regis-tered in 2006. “An officer ad-vised me that I should not ap-ply for the product’s patentbecause it is not new, the roadis already there. Instead, Ishould patent the process,” hesays.

It took years of discussionfor Vasudevan to be acknowl-edged by organizations suchas the Central Pollution Con-trol Board, National RuralRoads Development Agency,Central Road Research Insti-tute, Indian Centre for PlasticEnvironment and the NationalHighways Authority of India.

Even as his technology wasbeing debated in the govern-ment, Vasudevan started re-ceiving offers from privatecompanies both within andoutside the country to sell thepatent. “But I think it my dutyto serve my country first andtherefore, I gave it free to theIndian Government”. Some years ago, an American media expert went onrecord that M. G. Ramachandran was the second mostwell-known Indian after Indira Gandhi. No movie staranywhere in the world had created so much history as hedid.

The top superstar of Tamil cinema, he turned politicianand became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu more thanonce. M. G. Ramachandran acted in hundreds of films andhis box-office track record is amazing. The percentage ofhis flops is extremely low when compared to those of starsof his day.

He was born in Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in alower-middle class family that had been looking forwardto a happy life in that island country when tragedy struck. His father died suddenly and his poor deprived widowSathyabhama decided to return to her native land withher three small children and little else. She settled in thetemple town Kumbakonam where her sons Chakrapaniand Ramachandran attended school. But life forSathyabhama and her kids was a long struggle. Moneywas scarce and making both ends meet was a dailychallenge.

One day she realized that she could not send her boys toschool anymore and they would have to make their ownway in the wide world.

Left with no other option, she got her two boys into atheater troupe, Madurai Original Boys’ Company. Thetroupe was then under the tutelage of a teacher-turned-theater person, Madaras Kandaswami Mudaliar, whotrained the boys to act in plays which he staged day afterday in towns and villages. One of the boys in the troupewas M.K. Radha, Mudaliar¡¯s son, later a leading star ofTamil cinema.

Mudaliar nursed MGR like his own son through thickand thin. Life as stage actor growing into manhood was nobed of roses, and young MGR worked hard to his bones tobring cheer into his toiling mother’s life.

(“I have seen and known my mother struggling to feedus and it was my ambition to see that no mother everunderwent such hardships.” MGR told this writer yearslater in a chat.)

After much struggle and shocks, MGR faced a moviecamera in the amazing American Tamil filmmaker EllisR. Dungan’s maiden film ¡°Sathi Leelavathi” (1936). Heplayed a minor part, that of police inspector. Dressed inkhaki uniform, with shorts, laced turban, stick and all, itwas a modest debut for a spectacular career!

Initially roles in movies were few and far between but, undaunted, MGR toiled playing minor roles. And the firstsigns of the MGR charisma were beginning to be noticed. He was no star yet but was drawing attention. His un-usual handsome looks, his sinewy physique, his sword-fighting skills, all these and a dash of personal magnetismmarked him as a man destined to go places.

At last his opportunity came in 1947. The man who wasto be known as MGR for the rest of his life and thereaftertoo, was selected to play the hero in a Jupiter Picturesproduction “Rajakumari’. Written and directed by A. S. A.Sami, it was a swashbuckling tale which turned out to bea hit when released in 1948.

Interestingly, the film was almost not made! With theGovernment of India’s restrictions, imposed during theSecond World War (1939-45), no film could be more than11,000 feet in length and a producer was allotted only44,000 feet of film stock. Sami, making his debut asdirector, began shooting the film at Central Studios,Coimbatore. When he had finished shooting, a part of thefilm was seen by the producers. One of the Jupiter bosses,S. K. Mohideen, did not like what he saw and told hispartner M. Somasundaram that the project should beshelved!

Chennai Corporationstarted re-laying roads usingplastic-mixed bitumen on Jan.4

The work was launched onLakshmanan Street in T.Nagar by Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy and R. Vasudevan(Dean and Head of the Chem-istry Department, ThiagarajarCollege of Engineering,Madurai), who invented thetechnique and holds a patentfor it.

Duraisamy announced thatall roads in the city will haveplastic content in future. Atotal of 1,616 roads to be re-laid in 2011-2012 in the citywill have 10 per cent plasticcontent in addition to bitumen,

he added. The initiative to re-lay roads

with plastic in the city followsa gazette notification by theMinistry of Environment and

Forests in February 4, 2011.Plastic waste generation in

the Corporation limits is at therate of 9% of 3,711 tonnes ofgarbage a day. This amounts

to 334 tonnes per day whichcan be used for re-laying ofroads if all the residents co-operate with the civic body byleaving their plastic waste incollection bins.

The civic body has put inplace bins in every ward office. The plastic will be shredded toa size of 2-3 mm using a scrapgrinder before use in road re-laying, according to Vasude-van. The bitumen mix, afteraddition of plastic, will have atemperature of 140 degreesCelsius before the paver ma-chine is operated.

The quality and strength ofthe road increases manifoldafter mixing plastics and pot-holes formation can be pre-vented, he added.
