THE AVM STORY - 96

Thirulokachandar was now on a good wicket and his nextfilm for Meiyappan, “Athey Kanngal” (1967), was also a box-office success.

Interestingly, it was a different kind of film for Meiyappanand his AVM Studios, because it was a crime and suspensethriller, a murder mystery, a whodunit. Meiyappan alwayschose family melodrama, comedy, mythology or folk tale anddid not go for crime tales since it was not his cup of tea! But,with changing times and shifting preferences of moviegoersand his sons taking to production in full steam, he gave hisnod for this thriller.

An absorbing film in which the identity of the killer is kepta secret till the climax, it had the James Bond-type of starRavichandran and the attractive air-hostess-turned-moviestar Kanchana in the lead roles. Tautly told, the film was abox-office success.

The film was remade in Telugu as “Avey Kallu” (1967) withthe Telugu film star Krishna and Kanchana in the main roleswith Thirulokachandar directing this version too. It alsofared well at the box office

In 1967 Meiyappan produced in Tamil and Telugu thepopular mythological tale of the demon king Hiranyakasipuand his son Prahalada and the Narasimha Avatar of LordVishnu. This epic tale has been a great favourite with film-makers in India and has been produced many times in manylanguages.

It all began in 1917 when it was first made as a silent filmby the Elphinstone Bioscope Company, Calcutta. The nextfilm, again silent, came in 1920 with the title “NarasinhaAvatar” made by the Indian film pioneer, S. N. Patankar. Thethird silent film followed in 1926 as “Bhaktha Prahalad” inwhich one of actors was the celebrated Indian filmmaker V.Shantaram. It was directed by another pioneer of Indiancinema, Baburao Painter.

In the same year, the founding father of Indian cinema,Dada Saheb Palekar, filmed the same story under the sametitle. In those days it was common for Indian producers tomake one and the same tale in an unhealthy competitivespirit. Very rarely both versions succeeded.

It is a matter of regret that these silent films have been lostin the limbo of time and not a frame from them has survived.

When movies began to talk Tamil and Telugu in 1931, notsurprisingly, the tale of Prahalada was taken up for filmingby producers. Indeed the first Telugu-talking picture was“Bhaktha Prahalada” made in Bombay by the Grand OldMan of South Indian Cinema, H.M. Reddi. It was a hit.

In Tamil, the first talkie version came out in 1933 with twofilms being simultaneously produced in the studios ofCalcutta. In 1934, “Dasavatharam”, a film about the tenavatars of Lord Vishnu, was produced and one of segmentswas the Narasimha avatar.

The next film rolled out of the cans in 1939 with the title“Prahaladan”. Later no such film was produced for nearlythree decades until Meiyappan took up the story for produc-tion in Tamil and also Telugu in 1967.

Why did Tamil producers not take up the story for such along period? There was a reason of some sociological signifi-cance.

After the impact of the Dravidian political parties likeDravida Kazhagam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and oth-ers, its leaders Periyar E. V. Ramasami Naicker, C. N.Annadurai, Mu. Karunanidhi, M. G. Ramachandran andothers, the cult of rationalism with its daub of atheism wasfelt deeply in the Tamil society. Epic tales were denouncedand ridiculed as irrational, illogical and improbable fictionand film producers felt rather apprehensive of taking upstories like Prahalada. Indeed, after the punch-powerfulimpact of the watershed movie of 1949, “Velaikkari”, only afistful few of mythological Tamil movies were made until1967 when Meiyappan, with his characteristic drive and dynamism, took up the Prahalada story for production in twolanguages

Identity proof must for AC railpassengers from February 15

Indian Railways have made it compulsory for all passengers trav-elling in AC classes to carry an identity proof with them with effect fromFeb. 15. If not, they will be treated as travelling without ticket andpenalised.

Currently, only electronic and tatkal tickets require such IDs andcounter tickets sold from passenger reservation systems are notcovered.

The Railway Ministry is introducing this condition to prevent misuseor transfer of tickets by travel agents, according to an official.

From Feb. 15, AC I, II and III class passengers will have to producea Government-approved identity card even if he or she has purchaseda ticket from the counter. If more than one passenger is travelling onone ticket, any one passenger in a group is required to carry the originalID proof.

The ID proof could be a voter ID, PAN card, passport, driving licenseissued by a RTO, nationalised bank passbook with photo, credit cardissued by banks with laminated photos, student ID card with photo orAadhaar, the official said.

The railways have issued a circular to this effect, saying carryingproof of identity has been made compulsory to prevent travelling ontransferred tickets, blackmarketing of tickets and involvement oftouts.

Cases of blackmarketing and transfer of tickets have been risingalarmingly. During 2008-09, 20,240 cases of ticket transfer werereported and 2521 persons were apprehended. In 2010-11, 63,854 suchcases were detected and 2480 persons were caught.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems has been asked tomake necessary changes in the software to incorporate the messagein the rail tickets.

About 25 per cent of the reserved train passengers travel in the air-conditioned segment. Though the Railway Ministry would like toimplement this scheme for all segments of travel, it has not done so asmany of the lower segment train users including migrant labourers donot have an identity proof.
