Dear Meadows Families,

I taught language arts for 16 years. I used to tell my high school students that the two most important things they could learn in school were how to write well and how to speak well (As an English teacher; what else would I say?) However, I still think it is true. Communication is hugely important to every aspect of our lives. The introduction a prospective employer receives is typically in written form: a letter, resume, or job application. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar count! A face to face interview is some-thing every job seeker desires. No one wants to blow the opportunity to appear poised, confident, and – most importantly – articulate.

Communication is also important to our relationships. Our ability to share thoughts, feelings, ideas, and fears in a clear fashion can make or break our friendships, courtships, and family relationships. We are reminded (as if we need to be) of the need to talk to our children from commercials and talk shows. There are a veritable plethora of books and programs designed to improve our understanding of and communication with the opposite sex. Some people might feel that we are encouraged to share everything with everyone and perhaps it’s gone too far – I might actually be one of those!

However, when it comes to a child’s education, communication between parent and teacher is a critical ingredient to student success. Teachers need to learn about students from parents. They need parental input and parental support. It’s very similar to the support one parent gives another: united we stand, divided we fall. It’s very important that students not view their parents’ relationship with teachers as adversarial. No good can come of that. If disagreements arise, they should be settled out of sight and hearing of the children. Positive, productive communication though, is never a bad idea.

All of us have different opinions and ideas, and it is okay to share them. Sharing them appropriately is crucial: speak respectfully and thoughtfully, and – please – provide your name. We do not respond to anonymous communication. Our teachers welcome your questions and concerns and want to respond to them. We are professional people and can be trusted to conduct ourselves thusly. We want to understand you and your child better; therefore, communicate early and often with your child’s teachers. Thank you for your communication and your confidence as we continue to provide Extraordinary Learning for ALL!

Dear Parents, We need your help. After school we have anywhere from 25-50 kids hanging around in the back of the school waiting to be picked up. We do not have adequate supervision for these children after 3:55 PM. Therefore, be aware that the back gates of the school will be locked at 4:00 PM and students will need to wait for you in the parking/marquee area. School ends at 3:40 PM on non-TCT days. Please make arrangements to pick up your child at that time. There is also an after school MAC program available for after school child care. Thank you for your support!

MEADOWS FALL FUNDRAISER This school year, the Parents and Teachers at Meadows (PTM) are having a cash fundraiser to benefit the students and teachers (NO MAGAZINE SALES THIS YEAR). The Parents and Teachers at Meadows (PTM) will be in charge of this fund-raiser. The cash drive will last for 3 weeks beginning August 18th through Sep-tember 5th, 2014.(donations received after this date will not apply towards competitions).

Our goal is to raise $38,000. Your donations will provide funds for: teacher’s re-quests, 8th grade commencements, staff gifts, teacher’s meals for parent-teacher conferences, costs for positive behavior & intervention support program, teach-er’s IB training, art masterpiece & many more!

All you need to do is choose at least 5 family members, friends or business own-ers. You can even ask your neighbors or family doctors! Get creative! If 5 people you know donate $9 each, then we meet our goal! How easy is that!!. The back of the pledge form can be used as an envelope that can be folded to send to 5 peo-ple you know and they can refold it and send it back to the school. For an extra incentive, if during the 1st week of the fundraiser you bring back to school your 5 pledge forms with the names and addresses of whoever will make the donations, student’s name, 1st period teacher, and 5 stamps, you will get a prize and the PTM will drop it in the mail for you. It will also give the recipi-ent of the letter more time to mail it back or to go on line.

PRIZES

The top 3 individual students that raise the most money will each get an iPad mini!

The top 4 homeroom classrooms that raise the most money (one from each grade level) will have a Flip Dunk party on September 11th (5th and 6th grade) and Sep-tember 12th (7th and 8th grade). The teachers from those classes will each receive $50 restaurant gift card.

The 2nd place homeroom classrooms (one from each grade level) will have a pizza party.

Madison Meadows National Junior Honor Society is

Accepting Member Candidate Forms

8th grade students who wish to become NJHS members are encouraged to apply by com-pleting the student activity information form attached here:

or pick up the form in the front office.

The deadline for submitting the NJHS student activity information form is Friday, September 5, 2014 at 12:00pm (noon). The student activity information form must be completely filled out, signed by the student and parents, and personally returned to Ms. Poginy in room D33. Candidate information forms must also be accom-panied by copies of the 7th grade end-of-the-year report card. All grades from the beginning of 7th grade count in calculating the grade point average.

Requirements for membership to NJHS are as follows:

1. A cumulative grade point average, at grade level or above, of 3.625. Each class is weighted differently. Core classes carry a heavier weight than elective classes.

2. Good citizenship, character and leadership qualities are also required. One of the steps in admitting new members is to survey the Meadows staff to determine the candidate’s suitability.

3. The final step for membership is approval by the NJHS Faculty Council. Membership approval is by a simple majority vote. A unanimous vote is not required.

4. All member candidates will receive a letter advising them of their admission or their denial of membership by September 15, 2014.

The expectations for NJHS members are as follows:

1. After admission, members are expected to attend NJHS meetings faithfully. Most meetings will be held during the school lunch periods, however, there may be additional meetings necessary before or after school hours.

2. NJHS is a service organization. We expect our members to be doers, not merely joiners. Therefore, members are also required to perform at least 12 hours of community service work per semester (in addition to other community service require-ments) and to submit that information in writing to the NJHS Advisor. The group will organize several service projects throughout the school year to help meet this requirement.

3. Annual dues are $10.00. This money will be paid to the NJHS Treasurer within two weeks of being admitted to member-ship. If a student faces financial hardship, dues can be waived after consultation with the NJHS Advisor.

If you have any questions or require additional information regarding NJHS, please contact the NJHS Advisor, Ms. Poginy at 664-7633 or [email protected].

DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014, AT NOON.

CANDIDATE FORMS ARE TO BE GIVEN DIRECTLY TO MS. POGINY IN ROOM D33 BY NOON - NO EXCEPTIONS

IB Corner of the World

August, 2014

Dear Parent,

We have been busy on campus as we prepare for our authorization of becoming an IB World school. Teachers are beginning to teach their fall IB unit planner and will be focusing on more inquiry in the classroom with an added emphasis on Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL) plus continue to enforce the learner profile.

As more work is coming home, your son or daughter may start using some of the IB language. Below is a brief description of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills:

ATL – Approaches to Learning skills – skills of the self-regulated learner that teachers employ within the IB units:

Setting learning goals Planning out/organizing a project Processing information effectively – sifting, sorting, comparing, verifying, trying out different ways to learn Working to deadlines Reflecting on achievement both process and content Making changes to students’ learning processes where necessary

Here is the ATL chart that lists the organizers and the skill clusters:

Please be sure to visit our Meadows IB website if you want to learn more about IB at Meadows.

Ms. Kuhlman’s 5th Grade Social Stud-ies’ class is very busy making a map of the world.

A glimpse into Ms. Mellen’s lesson of the day in Language Acquisition Class (Spanish).

The learner profile is emphasized in Mrs. Lawton’s Spanish class.
