Hello and Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday – filled with family, friends, and lots of good cheer. Our schedule has changed for TCT days only to allow for a later lunch.

P1 8:30 – 9:10 P2 9:13 – 9:53 P3 9:56 – 10:36 P7 10:39 – 11:19 P4 11:21 – 12:01 P5 12:04 – 12:43 P6 12:46 – 1:26 P8 1:29 – 2:10

GRADE LEVEL UPDATES: 5th Grade: Language arts completed their informative writing CPA. Science just finished a research project on invasive species in the United States. Social Studies classes are learning about Colonial America and the events that lead to the American Revolution. Math classes just recently finished decimal operations and will begin fractions in January. 6th Grade: Science: In December we are wrapping up the Weather and Water Unit. To do so, we are combing all the knowledge that we have learned thus far about weather and water to create a 3-D Water Cycle project. The students are working in groups to demonstrate the processes that are taking place around us everyday. They have also been challenged to investigate how the human consumption of natural resources impacts the water cycle and depict this in their projects as well. They are doing a great job! In January, we will begin our Diversity of Life Unit, in which we will explore cells, microorganisms and multicellular organisms. This is a really fun unit as well. We love 6th grade Science! Social Studies: Students will present their Country Reports in a Parade of Nations on Friday, Dec. .21st. We are also exploring Ancient Egypt. In Mrs. Bradley's class students carved their name in a Cartouche using the ancient Hieroglyphic alphabet. We will be completing the unit on Ancient Egypt when we return from winter break. We will then move into our exploration of Ancient India. Also, students will begin to learn about ancient Rome and Greece; and Ms. Whitney's classes will read selected chapters of The Odyssey. English Language Arts: Students are reading Esperanza Rising and focusing on the five elements of literature which are character, setting, conflict, plot and theme. We also continued reading selected excerpts from Studysync. Students also completed the district benchmark which focused on Explanatory Essay writing. Math: Throughout December, 6th graders have learned about Pre-Algebra. We’ve discussed concepts like varia-bles and how they show up in the real world. Demonstrating how to use mathematical operations to solve for an unknown number has been a new way to look at math. In class, we’ve used Algebra Tiles to illustrate how to build and solve one-step equations. In January, we move to two-step equations and begin our next IB project. 7th Grade: Science is finishing up Earth Science and moving on to Ecology! We will be learning about animal adaptations and environmental changes! Social Studies is finishing a unit on the Civil War and presenting projects. Math is learn-ing about integers, equations, and systems of equations. Language Arts is doing presentations about a memory that students wrote about in an essay. AEP language arts is doing presentations on utopias and dystopias. Continued on next page….

8th Grade: Science classes are studying the chemical reactions of both synthetic and natural resources. In order to physically test these reactions, students made polymers, which is a fancy word for slime. Thermoenergy will be the next unit, and students will be creating a device that either emits or contains energy. Barbie dolls have been bungee jumping in Math class with the help of students’ calculations on height, weight, resistance, and distance. With the glass walls, it has been an interesting sight! Next week students will get an integer review, since integers seem flee from the minds of students like thieves in the night! If you want to help out at home, ask your child about integers and marvel at the response. All Social Studies classes are finishing up government and moving on to World War II after winter break. Both English classes are focusing on expository writing, after having finished novel studies and media comparisons. Wednesday guided studies are now devoted to the IB Community Project. Students are able to work with their groups on research and development of their service learning projects — a major grade in social studies classes. Exploratory: Digital Design 5/6: 5th & 6th grades participated in Hour of Code along with millions of others around the world on December. 5th. 6th grade has focused on photo editing and 5th grade has spent time learning coordinates in spreadsheets. PE 7/8: All 7th and 8th Grade Physical Education classes have been participating in Flag Football and Softball. Upcoming sports include Badminton and Paddle Ball. PE 5/6: All 5th and 6th grade students are completing our jump rope projects and a basketball unit. IB criterion are being done for each activity. We are finishing with some lead-up activities and just for fun activities. Spanish 7/8: Students are learning to identify and describe food items. They are using verbs (conjugating them correctly) to order food and drinks. They are also learning about the food pyramid used in Latin America. Spanish 5/6: 5th grade finished working on the verb “Ser” in the present tense and being introduced to asking and telling time. 6th grade is working on learning and using stem changing verbs in the present tense and verbs with irregular “Yo” forms. We are all looking forward to a successful second semester. Thank you for your continued support! Sincerely, Pat Carney M.Ed Principal Madison Meadows Middle School (602) 664-7601

This includes a special field trip, dance, awards ceremony, commencement ceremony, panoramic picture of entire class, commencement pictures, a memory USB, a student designed t-shirt and more! None of this is possible without the help of our volunteer parents who do all these extra things for the students! We can use volunteers for many different things but here is a list of the main needs:

sun safety Bridget Bell! • Volunteers’ Chair: Gets volunteers for commencement ceremony and dance. Becky Nieto! • Picture Day Chair: Sends notices out about picture day, provide clothing options if needed, help on

picture day Needed! • Dance Lead: Oversees 8th Grade Commencement Dance Needed! • Food Lead: Collects food for dance by donations and budget, help set up at dance Needed! • Dance Photo Lead: Reserves photo booth for dance, help get ready at dance Needed! • Awards Event Chair: Orders certificates, fill in student information, set up parent sign in table at as-

sembly. Needed!

• Theme/T-Shirt Chair: Order and arrange design for Commencement shirts. LeiLani Ward!

8th grade parents are not allowed at the dance, so 7th grade parents this is your chance to see what it's all about! Also 8th Grade parents will want to be able to enjoy commencement so we need other grade level parents to help on commencement day! Please contact me with any questions you have, all help is greatly appreciated! A committee meeting will be scheduled for later this month! Please come get an idea of what it's about, give your input and see where you can help! Bridget Bell 8th Grade Commencement Chair [email protected]
