En Theos
What do I tell my child about heaven and hell?
There is nothing more vivid than a child's imagination in
describing to you what heaven, hell, angels, even God
look like. The scary details are surpassed only by the
child's sincerity. Building on the things that children know is
the best way to teach them.
When families are close, especially when
gathered together for a meal or special occasion, children
feel the love, acceptance and closeness. They want to feel
it over and over, and gatherings are something that they
look forward to with excitement and joy. It is a great
metaphor for heaven, where people experience the love
and closeness of God all the time, a feeling that we want
to have and look forward to with excitement and joy.
Conversely, when we are alienated from each other and
feeling lonely and very much unloved, we experience a
little bit of what hell is like. Apart from God's love, we
feel very empty and abandoned. It is not a good feeling
and we try to avoid it. Reconciling with each other, going
to confession, and doing nice things for others helps
restore the love and closeness we desire.
Heaven and hell are best described in the context
of relationship. The closer we are to God, the more we
experience his love and peace. The further we are from
God, the more we experience isolation and loss. Those are
feelings on which children can put a face as well as build
a life.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM BISHOP FREDERIC BARAGA
“I exhort you to pray everyday — many times remember
God; never neglect Him.”
A HUGE THANK YOU to Donna Brisson
for her generous donation for the new
Rectory furnace. The new furnace has
been purchased and installed and is
working great. God Bless You Donna!!
Do you know of any non-Catholic
adults who are interested in
learning about our Catholic faith or
are considering joining the Catholic
Church? If so, please contact Joe Wallace at 202-3618
for help with any questions. We will be starting our
annual Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) for Adults
classes in late September with weekly meetings
continuing through April at Sacred Heart Munising.
Also, beginning soon CATHOLIC RETURNING HOME.
Please contact Joe Wallace at 202-3618.
Inspiration for the week
“What God has joined together.” We are all familiar with
these words. Because man and woman are essentially of the
same substance, although also distinctively different, there is
an innate desire to be connected and united. Admittedly,
marriage covenants can be extremely difficult to negotiate
and, at times, very painful to experience. But they can also
be celebrations of great union and happiness. This is proven
by couples who have been married for many years who still
have the same twinkle of devotion in their eyes that was
present on their wedding day. God designed it to be this
way. By God’s power, the two become one. This is not of
human design. The true intimacy of marriage is a Divine
Intimacy. It is a bond created by a power far greater than
any found in the two people who are joined. Marriage is
where the virtue of love is most fully expressed.
ATTENTION: There is a Lost & Found located in the Ushers
Room in back of church. If you have lost anything in the
church or hall please check to see if it is there. The box is full
and any unclaimed items will be thrown out soon.

SPIRIT LIFTERS
October 3 The Blessed Virgin did not speak many
words…[S]he remained, silent, in the adoration of
her Son; she lived on the contemplation of the
ineffable mystery wrought in her and through her.
Let us then live in recollection and try to remain
closely united to our Lord.
  Blessed Columba Marmion
October 4 Holy Virgin Mary, there is none like
you among women born in the world. Daughter and
handmaid of the heavenly Father, the almighty
King, mother of our most high Lord Jesus Christ,
and spouse of the Holy Spirit, pray for us to your
most holy Son, our Lord and Master.
   St. Francis of Assisi
October 5 O name of Mary! Joy in the heart,
honey in the mouth, melody in the ear of those
devoted to her! St. Anthony of Padua
October 6 In a singular way [Mary] cooperated by
her obedience, faith, hope, and burning charity in
the Savior’s work of restoring supernatural life to
souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the
order of grace. Lumen Gentium
October 7 With the rosary, the Christian people
sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate
the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience
the depths of his love. Through the rosary the
faithful receive abundant grace, as though from
the very hands of the mother of the Redeemer.
   Pope John Paul II
October 8 Divine love so penetrated and filled
the soul of Mary that no part of her was left
untouched, so that she loved with her whole
heart, with her whole soul, and her whole
strength, and was full of grace.
   St. Bernard of Clairvaux
October 9 Who could have given me our Lord,
but the Virgin Mary? It was easy to pray to her,
repetitious though it may seem. Saying the rosary
as I did so often, I felt that I was praying with the
people of God, who held on to the physical act of
the rosary as to a lifeline. Dorothy Day

Cycles of Faith
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “It takes three to make love, not two:
you, your spouse, and God.” Apart from the incarnation of God in
Jesus Christ, nothing speaks better of God’s incarnate love than
marriage. God designed it this way. We place great value on love
and rightly so. What we fail to realize, however, is that love, its
very presence and place in our lives, is not simply part of the human
package deal. Love comes from God. It is one of God’s greatest
gifts to human beings. When we begin to realize that our very
ability to love is sacred, it changes up how we see the essence of
life, and purpose and sanctity of marriage.
God is love. It stands to reason then that if we follow the path
of unconditional, self-emptying love we will then stumble upon God.
It is precisely this intimate wedding of God with love that gives such
eloquence and honor to the love between husband and wife. As a
living sign of Christ’s love for the Church and for humanity, husbands
and wives speak volumes of God’s unconditional incarnate love for
all of his children! The Divine power that brings unity and life to
marriage is so strong that once joined, it really cannot be
separated.
Admittedly, marriage covenants can be extremely difficult to
negotiate and, at times, very painful to experience. God’s perfect
divinity always meets our broken and imperfect humanity. God is
okay with this setup as he created it this way. Our loving is never as
unconditional as God’s and often tainted by our own imperfections,
needs, memories, hurts, sinfulness, and weakness. All of this
baggage negatively impacts even the most well-intentioned
marriages, causing them to be hurtful and empty. We are love
works in progress. God can succeed in perfecting our love only if
we keep our eyes fixed on him as the source of that love. That’s
why marriage is always about three and not just two.
The Divine intimacy at the heart of marriage is what can make
them celebrations of great union and happiness. Couples who are
still madly in love with each other after many years, still looking at
each other with that timeless twinkle in their eyes, best tell the story
of God’s oneness with humanity. Honor, celebrate, and support
those who have accepted a vocation to marriage. Living in a world
that easily pulls relationships apart, may they find hope and
inspiration from their faith companions who are on the same
journey!
