EDITOR’S LETTER

Time really flies when you are having fun. I can't believe we are already in mid-February. I am sure a lot of people are looking forward to the valentine's weekend; I see red and white already. I had fun at the end of January, thanks partly to Soulbee and DJ Skeelo for inviting me to their events. I am disturbed by the growing attacks and looting of foreign-owned shops. Is this fueled by xenophobia or is it just opportune for criminals. Whatever the reason this thing must stop now. Congratulations to Ivory Coast for winning AFCON. Let me thank Kgolo Trust once more for funding the printing costs of this edition, we really appreciate your assistance. We are on Facebook: Mabopanesun and Twitter@Mabopanesun please follow us.

ANC Tshwane Region offers financial assistance to disadvantaged students

Words: Staff Reporter

The African National Congress Tshwane Region has embarked in a program to offer financial assistance to the disadvantaged students pursuing their studies in institutions of higher learning in Tshwane. ANC Tshwane Region acknowledges the historical challenges of financial constraints that continue to negatively impact on our people's access to higher education, which therefore denies them their right to learn, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic. Our approach is guided by the prescripts of the Freedom Charter, which says: “the doors of learning shall be opened to all” is undertaken in cognizance of the incessant burden that is annually placed on vulnerable students through financial exclusions As the ANC, we acknowledge the inherent legacy of apartheid economic structure, which entrenched high levels of inequalities, which continueto lead to high levels of poverty, unemployment, and therefore contributing towards making education

people. As the organization which is deeply-rooted in the black and poor communities, we witness on daily basis the struggles of our people as they try to survive within these difficult economic conditions. The ANC has noted that the Department of Higher Education and Training's first annual statistical report, published in 2013, which looked at the “size” and shape of post-school education and training in South Africa” said that only 15% to 20% of students graduated in record time. Some of the reasons for these low rates include financial constraints, where students enroll for courses but don't have funding to see them through or worse don't have funding at all or even enter the gates of tertiary intuitions. Universities tell us that usually if students can get funding and support to access higher education they are at least likely to go on to finish their qualifications. The ANC through the PYA in Tshwane has made available R300 000. 00, which will be utilized in assisting the targeted number of 200 students from disadvantaged background, to pay for their registration fees in various tertiary institutions within the Tshwane region. This intervention has been mobilized by the ANC primarily from the private sector organizations, with the sole purpose of providing financial assistance to disadvantaged students. We invited all disadvantaged students to visit the PYA desks in their respective campuses as well as the ANCYL regional offices to be provided with financial assistance and temporary accommodation.

Soul Sessions and Capital Good Vibes Rocked

Words and Images: Frans Malatsi

February is a long month for most people; for not so obvious reasons so I was not surprised to see so many people go out in numbers at the Early of the month of February to have fun. We attended two exciting events on the 31 February and the 01 February at the same venue, Andy's Industrial Chisanyama. Both events were well organized although the latter event had a late start but it soon picked up. A big well done to DJ Skeelo and his company Remoakantse Holdings for a well-organized Sunday Soul Sessions, as well as SoulBee and CGV for a great picnic. I had my doubts about the venue, since it was my first time there. The security was tight thanks to our brothers from DRC, the sound was also crystal clear, the ladies were gorgeous (Hi Ladies next time when you see me don't be shy to hug me ne.). I give both events a 9/10 you guys rocked.

for supMatric candidates, who were implicated in-group copying during the National Senior Certificate (NSC) 2014 examinations, can register for the 2015 Supplementary examinations, says the Eastern Cape Education Department. The department has requested candidates to register, following an approval from Education Minister Angie Motshekga for them to get a special concession in their respective schools or districts.“This approval for them to register is granted on the basis that these candidates were assisted by the Chief Invigilator, Invigilator, or Subject teachers and did not act on their own [They] did not act on their own accord,” the department said on Wednesday. However, in cases where candidates initiated the copying, the department said special concession would not apply.“These candidates will be allowed to write the supplementary examinations in the subjects in which they are implicated in group copying. It needs to be noted that this is a 'once off' dispensation given the special circumstances,” said the department. - SAnews.gov.za

CAREERS

Once you have uploaded something to the web, it could very well be impossible to remove it. You're lucky if it hasn't yet been downloaded or screen grabbed and reshared. The fact is that social media platforms are being used as a recruitment tool by employers – a practice that is becoming more popular – and it is your responsibility to know what content is associated with your name on the internet. It doesn't matter how impressive your CV is, you will not get called for an interview if your online persona puts recruiters off. Your online footprint is a reflection of your personal brand and your profile, status updates, threads and pictures form a picture that may influence a potential employer's hiring decision.

Deal-Breakers:

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development Ruth Bhengu has called on the Department of Small Business Development to help cooperatives by investing in the machinery they require.“Capital investment will be a better option than giving out grants, as they do not empower people but promote a culture of dependency,” Bhengu said. She said the country needed businesses that are effective, self-sustaining, income generating and contribute to job creation. The Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development visited spaza shops and cooperatives meant to empower people with disabilities in Soweto, Kagiso and Jeppestown, as well as developments designed to grow small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Riversands and Midrand. Small business owners raised challenges such as the lack of financial support, unfair competition from foreign nationals, late payment of invoices by government and policies that stifle the process of starting a business. “Government officials need to be in touch with people on the ground if they want to address the poverty question in the country. Business plans should also be informed by visits to small business enterprises and not by perceived needs,” Bhengu said. – SAnews.gov.za

Doug Harris is a loveable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: He has no best man. That's the dilemma Doug (Josh Gad) is facing. He has asked the woman of his dreams Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) to become his wife. Jimmy runs the Best Man Inc a company that specialises in 'being a best man when you need it the most'. In just a few days Jimmy will attempt to pull off the biggest job of his career, a 'Golden Tux' which includes a best man, groomsmen and a bachelor party. Jimmy hires a set of misfits to pose as Doug's friends. One of them is Jorge Garcia from Lost fame. The guys go about creating fake stories and fake memories and it doesn't take long for the friendship to become real.

.

L.A. rapper Kid Ink stormed the charts in late 2013 — not as a unique hip-hop voice but as a conduit for DJ Mustard beats and Chris Brown guest spots. On his second major-label album, he has more artistic aspirations, though they're mostly flat Kanye retreads: obscure prog-rock samples ("Faster"), "All of the Lights"-style horn arrangements ("What It Feels Like"), and recruiting today's hot young regional sensations (Dej Loaf, Young Thug, Migos) as supporting cast. But excellently crafted radio fare — the candy-coated "Body Language," the Snootie Wild-inspired "Dolo" and the Nineties-R&B-steeped "About Mine" — sticks out, even if Kid Ink doesn't.

Soul Candi is fond of their themed compilations, especially the love series. House for Lovers is aimed directly at the 'sucker for love' house fan and lands the perfect killer blow. The double disc compilation is filled with most of the more recent love infused deep house ballads that we've been singing along to over the past couple of months. Split into a local and international disc, Soul Candi manages to find a balance between sticking to the lovers theme and still offering a smooth flowing blend of house. The album features tracks from Zano, DJ Whisky, Andyboi, Cueber and many more.

Ivory Coast crowned AFCON champions

Early February 2015

Veteran Ivory Coast goalkeeper Copa Barry saved a penalty and then got up and scored for his team during a sudden death penalty shootout to win the 2015 Africa Nations Cup. After the cup final ended goalless after 120 minutes of tense football, the penalty shootout went to sudden death and in the Early the Ivorians won 9-8 with goalkeeper Copa Barry netting the decisive kick. Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah was the man whose penalty was saved by Barry, who then got up and netted the very next kick to win the contest. In the 11th minute Yaya Toure went down inside the danger area after a challenge, but while he was looking for a penalty the match official was having none of it as the game recorded some tough tackles in the early stages. In the 16th minute Max Gradel missed the target after Ghana had made an error in defence to allow the midfielder to slip into space and fire a shot wide of goal. The impressive Christian Atsu came very close to the opener in the 25th minute when he let rip with a left footed drive from outside the 18 area that cannoned off the upright. Then in the 36th minute Andrew Ayew looked to cross from the left by-line, but the angle was too tight and his cross effort took a slight deflection and squeezed off the outside of the upright. In the 53rd minute Atsu cut inside from the right wing and passed inside for Asamoah Gyan, but he shot high and wide from the 'D' outside the big box. A minute later Ghana centre back John Boye made a vital challenge to win the ball ahead of Gervinho, who would have been in on

goal otherwise. In the 69th minute John Boye rose well and headed just wide of goal following a half chance for Ghana in the Ivorian penalty area. Three minutes later and Atsu made an impact once more, this time he beat his man down the right of the box, but his pull-back fell behind Gyan, who could not get a clean shot on target. In the final minute of regulation time Serge Aurier's low cross forced a save from Braimah and his defence cleared the loose ball as the Black Stars were close to allowing the Ivorians in to score. No goals at full time and the game moved to the thirty minute extra time period. Three minutes into the first half of extra time and Atsu came close when he controlled a long ball brilliantly on his chest before acrobatically volleying wide of the target. Atsu was again at it in the second half of extra time when his left footed half volley zipped wide of goal in the 111th minute. The extra time period still could not separate the two teams as neither side could score in 120 minutes of play. The tie went to the dreaded penalty shootout and it was the Ivorians who came out winners 9-8 after sudden death spot kicks. No score after extra time.
