The Mackay Gas Turbine uses open cycle turbine technology with two Rolls Royce Olympus jet engines. Commissioned in 1975 and recently refurbished, the gas turbine’s ability to start quickly and send electricity into the grid is important in ensuring a secure, reliable power supply for distribution to customers. Environment Several initiatives are in place at the Mackay Gas Turbine to minimise the impact on the environment, including the use of low-sulphur oil which minimises sulphur emissions. Fuel supply The thermal gas turbine uses 352 litres of low-sulphur oil to generate one megawatt-hour of electricity, enough to power 100,000 x 100 watt light bulbs. Fuel is delivered to the site by tanker trucks and stored on site in two 400,000-litre tanks.
