I am writing in response to the ad seeking to fill the assistant buyer’s employment position at your company. I have substantial qualities to offer you and your company.

I am currently People Editor of my school’s award winning yearbook. Yearbook has taught me how to give and handle constructive criticism, how to work with different types of people and how to engage people I don’t know well. Yearbook has also taught me the importance of deadlines and how to work with a team to produce a finish product of something we’re all proud of. I am a consistent, hard working young woman always looking for an opportunity to learn and become more successful. I thrive the most when I am pushed by those around me. I’m looking for an employer that will recognize my talents and push me to work even harder.

I am currently a manager at Planet Smoothie. My job description means I’m always alone in the store; I have responsibilities with money, cleaning and customer service. I was a nanny full time last year and have volunteered with my church and in the Dominican Republic. I am also an active member of my school’s Always Wear Your Seatbelt Club.

s e l f a n a l y t i c A L As my story goes, when I was six I saw Overboard with Goldie Hawn and after that, I felt I had to write everything down. It became so important to me to document everything that I felt I want to be reminded of if I lost my memory. I really and truly have my sister to thank for starting my journalism career. All of her years at Boone, she did newspaper. I always thought it was so cool how she’d come home talking about the stories she wrote, but nothing compared to when she would bring the paper home. More than the stories or the fun that she had with her staff, I wanted the sense of accomplishment she felt when seeing her things published. I wanted the kind of pride she had in her work in my own. This year was completely different than last year; I was an editor! Not only was I an editor, but a co-editor, which comes with all kinds of different challenges than any other single editor. I was so blessed that my partner was someone I thoroughly enjoy working with everyday, but that doesn’t mean we never argued. It was challenging to make every single one of our pages because we have different tastes. In the end, though, that made our section so much better because there is personality from both of us on all of our pages. I have learned more in the past three years of this course than I ever thought possible. Not only about journalism, but about life. I got really lucky with Burke, she taught me everything I needed to know to be successful and more. I can’t think of a course I would’ve gotten more out of. I believe this is the most valuable class offered at Boone.

r e f l e c t i o n 1 This page kind of started of with Lindsey and I throwing around ideas of how it was going to look after it was completed. When we first started putting things on the page, it looked like a mess. It had no cohesiveness, it was just colorful words and a big black map. We probably recreated this page six or seven times and I think that’s why we loved the end product so much. We watched it evolve over and over again until it was finally the page we wanted. We were also really lucky to have Ballard as our staffer; he was so patient and helpful throughout the stressful process that was this page. I feel like this page might have been easier if it wasn’t in deadline one. This was one of the first pages we ever made together. It’s hard to have two people saying two different things about what to put on a page and we were still learning about how to do things for our section together. The way this page fits together so well is my favorite part. Maybe that’s because none of it fit together at all in the beginning and we fit it all together like a puzzle. I think this is a page students will actually stop and look at as they flip through their books. If we like something and people who bought books like it too, that’s all we can really hope for.

r e f l e c t i o n 1

r e f l e c t i o n 2 I don’t like these “Distinctive Details” at all. We created the original design on a Sunday, came to school the next day and realized we only had a very small amount of space to work with. Our original design became impossible to fit on any of our pages, so we kind of threw this very bland design together. I wish they weren’t in the book. They need more pull, I just feel like they are so boring. We originally thought of this idea our junior year because we loved the handwriting of whoever Cosmopolitan’s Cover Girl was. Their design is a full page, though. As I look back through the documents, these stand out to me as an outcast design. Maybe if they were bigger or had pictures on them, I would like them more. I think they are definitely our worst piece of work this year and they needed more time and effort than what we gave them.

r e f l e c t i o n 3ZIGLAR: I love this picture. Throughout all of this football season, I was trying to get pictures of Ziglar screaming at his players. I love the way that during a football game, his emotion is constantly written all over his face. I really wanted to get that in a shot, and football is my favorite thing to shoot because even if I get no good pictures, I had a ton of fun shooting. The emotion is definitely what attracts me to this picture. (Ads; Deadline 3; GFP)

IAN: This picture is only actually cool if you know the story behind it. I went along to a baseball game not needing or wanting any good pictures, I was just goofing around with the camera the whole time. So, when I got a good shot, com-pletely on accident, it was really cool. Baseball and lacrosse are two of the hardest things to take pictures of, for me. The action in this picture, how he is mid-swing is really cool. (YEARBOOK; 2013 Legend; Sports; baseball 4-16; Ian)

CONNOR: This picture doesn’t have great lighting, but I was just happy to get a picture of him in action. As previously stated, lacrosse is one of the very hardest things (I think) to shoot so any decent picture I get while I’m at a game seems like a huge accomplishment. r e f l e c t i o n 4 This year, I was a coeditor for what I think is an extremely important section of the book. I think we did a really great job with our section. There is room for improvement, now that we see the book there are things we want to change but overall, I think we did a swell job. We tried to make it as fun and colorful as possible. I think most students look at our section first or second because they want to see their picture, but i hope other things around their pictures that we made catch their eye. Being committed goes without question. Every Sunday for the first 20 weeks of school we sat and worked on our section. Placing those mugs over and over and over again, running around getting signatures for seniors that didn’t take their picture, designing pages that sometimes, were never even seen and we did all of that and more with happy hearts, because we are/were so committed to the book and to our section.

r e f l e c t i o n 5 The hardest part of this year for me was definitely designing. I felt really thrown into it because even though we learned design rules in J1, that was a year before I ever really had to design. After the editors went to the beach Lindsey and I just sat down and kind of played around with pages until I felt comfortable. One of us would start a page, send it to the other one to have them change stuff and then kind of just keep going back and forth until we liked them enough to turn in. I was really lucky to have Lindsey because she was patient and we like a lot of the same things. There was rarely disagreement on what looked good. Other than design, I just hated placing the mugs. I would do it all again if I needed to, but that was just so not my thing.

r e f l e c t i o n 6 My three goals were continue to meet all deadlines, be available for staffers/J1 students that may need help and make all edits in proofs perfectly. Looking back at this is upsetting because I didn’t achieve my first goal. My last deadline was the first deadline I didn’t meet. It was the lacrosse page. I’m so annoyed about it still, I just don’t understand how it happened. Looking back I guess it was all just one big miscommunication. Even so, I should’ve never not met a deadline. My second goal went over well. Lindsey and I came in a few mornings to help J1 students with their quote pages and I tried to make myself more available when I could for staffers. My third goal was easy to do because it was just a part of my job. I still don’t quite understand how our edits in our proofs weren’t done, it should’ve never happened that way. Maybe because it was deadline one and we were still figuring everything out together, I don’t know. But we corrected all of the rest of our proofs perfectly.

r e f l e c t i o n 7Y3: I love this story because I feel like it’s different than most sports stories. It was really easy to write; it all just kind of spilled out. I was lucky that the lacrosse team had such a unique season, making my job a little easier. It’s fun to write stories about fun things like winning a game for the first time ever. I love the quote in this story, I fought hard for them to stay in place. I think the story was captured well because I was able to incorporate the closeness of the game into my story and also the importance of the rivalry.

Y15: It’s always fun to get picture of someone in their element, doing what they love and I think that’s why I love this picture so much. Coach Ziglar is/was known for his speeches and his yelling. This photo really shows him in action, doing what he loves. There is emotion all over his face and on some of the player’s. That’s the best thing about this picture. With the coach off to the right, you can see a few of the players. I’m so glad it was printed because there aren’t more pictures that sum Ziglar up more, I’m happy I caught it.

Y36: I think this is one of the funnest pages in the book. It demonstrates our abilities well through the design. At CSPA’s annual spring conference, one of the speakers I had said, “Use color and use a lot of it but make sure it doesn’t look like Crayola vomit.” That really stuck with me while I was designing because I love color so much, I believe it’s what makes a page. I believe color makes this page. It all kind of fit together like a puzzle piece once we got everything together and threw our ideas up, down, back and forth. This was the first page I really loved.

r e f l e c t i o n 8 If you look at my portfolio from 2012, it goes without saying I’ve grown in the class. Last year I had no design responsibilities, it was a whole section of the class missing from my job(s). This year was completely different, I did design and hardly any writing for the book. I’m sad I didn’t get to write much because that’s what I really love but I’m also glad I learned how to design. Now I have both skills to use throughout my life. Last year I cobbed and used color for my portfolio and this year I actually made things and used knowledge from the year to create my portfolio. Both portfolios look a lot like me, but one looks way cleaner. I’m glad both have my personality because in my opinion, that’s the most important part of a portfolio, not the design of it. I love the portfolio because it really does show how much we’ve all grown. This year, I used color like last year but it also looks so much more grown up which is exciting. I’ve grown more throughout the last year than I ever thought I could in this class.
