FROM THE PRESIDENT RECORDING ORAL HISTORIES

The deaths this year of three of our senior members Maisie Cox, Ronald Sawkins and Amy Needham bring into sharp focus the importance of recording the personal histories and memories of our longtime residents. Maisie lived in Marrickville for more than 50 years while Amy spent almost all her 101 years in the area. They undoubtedly saw many changes in that time. Fortunately Ronald's son John has put his father's reminiscences on paper and we hope to publish these in the forthcoming issue of Heritage.

There is more to preserving our heritage than "saving old buildings". Although the built environment is undoubtedly Important, the social histories of the people who have lived and worked in Marrickville and their individual stories are just as Important, Such stories may not have great historical or political significance but they enrich our understanding of the past. I would like to hear from members who are interested in forming an oral history group, either to record their own life story or to help others record theirs. Please phone me on 560 1751.- Judith Matheson.
