Game 5
This was a disappointing loss, andwas essentially down to giving up8 runs in the second inning, andanother 8 in the ninth. AndyGilbert started for Great Britainagainst Goldberg who pitched forIsrael. Spalding offered tofinance baseball teams that wereassociated with professional soccerteams, however, only four clubsDerby, Stoke, Preston and Aston Villatook up the offer, with Aston Villa thefirst champions.

Trafford Saints this season havesome 50 children registered asplayers and as more children areexposed to baseball this number willonly rise. The Saints were asked byBBC TV to do a promotional film tobe shown on Nationwide TV last July, the film only lasted 5 minutes, buttook all day to record. As a result ofthis film the BBF received hundredsof 'phone calls and letters fromchildren enquiring about baseball.Trafford Saints are extremely proudthat they were chosen and of theoutcome..

All our children and coaching staffwould like to thank all the staff andplayers at St Paul Saints, and we willbe rooting for you in the comingseason.
Ih 1995 the Saints retained theleague championship. In 1996 theBBF teamed up with PONY andintroduced leagues all over GreatBritain. The Saints won the NorthWest Pony League and entered theNational play-offs, but were beatenby a very strong team from Scotland,Dundee Dragons, by 15-14. Dundeewent on to win the National title in
men in Stretford [now in the Boroughof Trafford] decided to form abaseball team and they were called'Stretford Sioux'. The team were notvery successful until they played oneday in North Manchester. When theteam arrived they thought there wasanother team in Stretford called the'Saints' until the groundsman said hedidn't know how to spell Sioux so thenearest he could think of beginningwith an'S' was Saints! The team gottheir first victory that day anddecided to keep the name Saints forgood luck. This proved to be thecase in 1963, '64 and '65 when theSaints were British Champions. TheSaints name disappeared for a fewyears when the team stopped playingin the early 70's..1was the last playerfrom the championship team stillplaying baseball. in Stretford andwhen a decision was made to start achildren's team, only one namecame to my mind, 'Saints'. TraffordSaints Baseball club started in 1993,playing 'friendly'games againstteams from all over the North ofEngland and sometimes we couldonly just manage nine players. In1994 an organised league in theNorth West was started with 5teams. The Saints won the leagueand also the North West Trophy.

TRACKING LOlTERYMONEY
Lottery projects need tocater for the widestpossible cross-section ofpeople, facilities must bewell designed andconstructed, and must bedurable. Above all, the
It is a legal requirement thatall projects funded by theNational Lottery aremonitored and evaluated toensure that public money isbeing spent as intendedand that projects aresuccessfully achieved. Atthe English Sports Councilwe also need to. be satisfiedthat we are funding theprojects that.best meet ourbroader aims.
During 1997, our monitoringofficers expect to visit all342 projects completed bythe middle of last year. Allprojects which received agrant of £250,000 or moreand a selection of smallerschemes will receive acomprehensive evaluationvisit covering the design, management, finance andsports developmentfeatures of the newfacilities. Small projectswith an award of less than£100,000 will receive abasic monitoring visit. Awritten report wi II beprovided following the visitwhich may containrecommendations foraction, which, in turn will beinspected by our officers.Monitoring visits areintended to be positiveevents, ensuring that wework with our manypartners to provide thehighest quality sportingfacilities.
Setting Targets
To track projects fromapplication through toconstruction and postcompletion we are askingnew applicants to be quitespecific about the aims, objectives and targets oftheir project. We will beusing these as criteriaagainst which to evaluatethe success of completedfacilities. A tennis club, forexample, which applies for agrant to build extra courts
will be asked tostate how manyand what kind of
players will be using allfacilities, both old and new, after one and three years.Completed schemes willthen have to submit actualusage figures to compareagainst targets provided bya questionnaire or a visitfrom a monitoring officer.

projects we fund shouldbring about a direct increasein participation in sport.
The whole point ofmonitoring and evaluatingprojects is to provide a sharpfocus on results. No matterhow good an application tothe Lottery Sports Fund oursuccess can only be judgedon the building of highquality sports facilities whichmake a direct impact onsporting participation andimprove access toprofessional coaching.

From an umpirE;l's point of view itwas an honour not only to umpirethe Series, buUo work with someexceptional officials who clearlyhad hundreds of games undertheir belts, and two of whom hadattended the famous JoeBrinkman Umpire School inFlorida. But the eventexceeded all my expectations, even if the 2-month longPennsylvanian drought endedthe moment Ian Smyth and Istepped off the aeroplane - thetorrential downpours pushed thetournament back by two daysand even then it was only thanksto two helicopters being used todry off the field that some gamestook place at all.
