I’m going to share with you today, a body of work on our CULTURE and employee experience that as a team, we’ve been working on since last summer. I want to tell you the story about how this statement, made for this, came to be. It’s a story about US, who we ARE and what we DO. I want you to pause on these words for a moment. Made for this.

I’m going to share with you today, a body of work on our CULTURE and employee experience that as a team, we’ve been working on since last summer.

I want to tell you the story about how this statement, made for this, came to be. It’s a story about US, who we ARE and what we DO.

This work demonstrates how powerful our peoples’ voices can be when we REALLY listen. It’s a bold statement, made for this, because it intends to provoke a feeling, a connection, and a sense of certainty that being made for this is what sets us APART.

It also provokes a question we have perhaps asked ourselves from time to time during our tenure at Northwell Health, and that question is…am I REALLY made for this?

We talk a lot about building the culture we want. We talk a lot about being a bestplace to work.

And as leaders we own our culture. That means then, that we must first own our OWN experience, and then equally important, we own the experience for the teams we lead. That’s why, we know that expressing our culture proudly yet honestly, while acknowledging… the good days and the bad days…

Enables us to create the most AUTHENTIC employee experience for all. Because when WE get it right, it has massive pay-offs… So, with the help of many of you in this room and also your team members - we’ve created a VERY powerful description of the Northwell Health experience.

The technical term for this is an EVP, which stands for employee value proposition. It’s also known as an employee promise. And, having this type of statement is a proven way to express our promise to our employees.

Simply put, it’s the deal we make with each other. It’s what you get, for what you put in. So, think of it this way, when you really know who you are and you can truly describe that to people, folks can understand what is expected of them and they are able to make an informed choice.

They can really answer the question for themselves, am I made for this?

As leaders, part of the Northwell experience is about challenging the status quo, being comfortable with change and striving to be BETTER every day. So in the good times and the hard times, we need to know if the people we choose and the people who stay are “made for this.”

We all make a deal with ourselves about what it’s like to work here.

For me, and I suspect for all of you… the rewards FAR outweigh the tough days. But, IMAGINE how much faster people would be up to speed, productive and able to fully contribute on day one… if they understand what is REALLY expected.

So to do that, we’ve talked and listened to thousands of colleagues at all levels of the organization. Asking them questions about what it means to be a team member here.They told us what it’s like to work here on their BEST day, and what it would take to have MORE of those best days.

Our EVP then, in essence, is the catalyst to enabling more and MORE of those best days for everyone.

So our goal was to describe in clear and impactful terms – just what the Northwellexperience is.

How GREAT it is, but how HARD it can be. And just how HIGH our expectations TRULY are. So just imagine if you could bottle that…

And, for my data loving friends out there. Don’t just take my word for it.

A strong EVP can improve the commitment of new hires by up to 29%, and improve employee commitment by close to 40%.

So… back to our story. We decided to take an INNOVATIVE approach. Typically a bunch of executives together, behind closed doors, would come up with what THEY thought would best represent who they are.

But that’s NOT what we did. We spoke to more than 2,000 team members to understand what Northwell Health meant to each one of them.

We are SO happy that we engaged our team members in this way. We trusted our people – and they told us what motivates them and what frustrates them.

We truly listened.

We talked to our physicians, our administrators, our clinicians and our nurses from ALL over the place. And maybe some of you were even in some of those chats.

And we learned that no matter your role, or where we work, there are a couple of things that bind us all together. It’s our work ethic, and our willingness to go above and beyond…and that we’re team players, when it counts. And we felt over and over, the pride come through, when they talked to us about putting patients first, caring for one another and the way that we provide opportunities for growth.

People really believe that when they work hard here, they can be anything.

Even more profound, were the sound bites and comments we heard when we asked the question, what do you tell your friends and your family about working here?

…you better get yourself some comfortable shoes because boy, you’ll be running!

And you know what, you definitely need a strong bladder to work here. I guess that means that underneath it all, you don’t even have a minute to go to the bathroom. Kind of like our break today… right?

But what also struck me was the PRIDE. People said I’ve got a job that makes my kids PROUD…

…and that you have to have a HEART

and always remember why you do, what you do.

We also asked people to tell us what a great day at work felt like, and what a difficult day felt like. And you know what? We found that actually, when all was said and done, every day has its ups AND downs, its highs AND lows.

THIS is our reality. Powerful, emotional, hard, funny and WONDERFUL everyday moments that make up our culture. We took care not to glamorize what people said. We’ve simply captured what’s REAL – to develop our employee promise.

Every word has mattered. Because every word has come from OUR people. All those everyday moments captured in the film are the very essence of WHO we are and what it’s like to work here.

So, I want you to indulge me for about 60 seconds.

I want you all to close your eyes. And I want you to REALLY listen. Listen to our newly created employee promise. And, as you listen, I want you to imagine yourself doing what you love at work, doing what you are called on to do, on your very best day. So, let’s close our eyes together and listen to our employee promise.

From the smallest gesture to life-changing treatment and research, we always actwith intent, with heart and with passion to make people’s lives the best possible. It’s not a normal 9 to 5. We’re flexible, hardworking and not afraid to push boundaries to go the extra mile for our colleagues, our patients and their families. We are true toour beliefs and our quest to define the health care industry of tomorrow. Caring runsthrough everything we do. It’s who we are.

Northwell Health was not made for just anyone. Here we aren’t satisfied with settling,so we search for innovation in everything we do. Our people got it RIGHT…

Those words are SO meaningful. I’ve probably heard those words a thousand times. And listening to them now, with you… they capture everything I believe we are on our best day, and every day.

There’s one more important piece that has emerged from what our people told us. And that is, that there were five themes that emerged to anchor our employee promise. These themes were consistently heard and shared as what we hold true in all 74 sessions, and across 2000 people. And those themes were…

We are truly: Compassionate, innovative, ambitious, together, and ourselves.

And so, with Michael’s blessing, these five themes, which represent the voices of our very own people, will now become the NEW way we articulate our values.

But just before you think this is just another campaign, remember THIS.

Our mission, our vision and our values remain central to the success of our brand and who we are. THAT will NEVER change. We will always be committed to our community and patients we serve. That is our mission.

And we will always strive to innovate and transform the future of health, wellness and quality of life. THAT is our vision.

So now we can simply say… that our brand is our promise to our consumers, our culture of care is our promise to our patients, and our employee promise is simply our promise to one another.

So this is what we need from you…

We’ve put together a plan, from now to May 1st that simply asks you to get familiar with the research and content of the employee promise. And as we get closer to May 1st, we’ll give you more tools and resources to help support the full launch plan.

Because, much like with the Brand launch just over a year ago, central to our success in leveraging the promise, is YOUR active leadership and engagement. Because as with everything else at Northwell, and as we heard many times today, the possibilities are ENDLESS.

This work has always been about WHO we are and WHAT we do. Earlier we listened to our new employee promise. And while perhaps powerful to hear from ONE voice, it is best said from the voices of some of our people who helped shape it. It’s only right therefore that you hear it from them.
