DESCRIPTION

Made in Japan: 2009 Akabeko Game Issue was created in an English language Student Collaborative Class Project (SCCP) in Fall of 2008 at the University of Aizu. We met once a week for a semester to play, discuss, and write about our favorite games. We made this magazine to share these games with the rest of the world. We hope that you will find something interesting to play from these pages. Akabeko was a 9th Century cow devoted to Buddha. Akabeko is a symbol of the Aizu region in Japan. 2009 is also the Year of the Cow. The University of Aizu was established in 1993 and is located in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, Japan. The University is bilingual; students learn about computer science in Japanese and English with professors from around the world. Learn more at http://www.u-aizu.ac.jp

DRAG-ON DRAGOONSQUARE ENIXPlay Station 2 (JP) Release: 09/11/03 6,800 yen(new), 2940 yen(ULTIMATE HITS) Value score 9/10 Official Site: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/games/ps2/dod/ Players: 1 Reviewer: Satoru YamaguchiScore 83/100

This is an action game in which you fight with hundreds of enemies with a dragon. There are two modes: story and free mode. In the story mode, player clears the stage according to the story. There are some missions in each stage, and when they are all achieved, the stage is clear. In the stage, there are three modes: the ground battle, the low sky war, and the upper sky war. In the free mode, you can choose the stage. However, it should be what you have already cleared. You can foster the character here. And, the fostered character can be used in the story mode. To want you not to make a mistake here is not to be fostered my favorite character. This is hero only.

In the ground battle, the player can use the hero and the subcharacter.

In the low sky war, the player can use the hero, dragon and the subcharacter.

In the upper sky war, you can use only the dragon.

Explain about the battleThe subcharacter is selected before the stage starts. The subcharacter increases whenever satisfying conditions are met. The abilities are also various. The player can use the subcharacter during the stage. There is a time restriction in the subcharacter, and it returns to the former character when time passes. And, there is a limitation also in the frequency that uses the subcharacter. In the upper sky war, you can use only the dragon. The upper sky war is not an action game but a shooting game differing from the previously described one. You can use three weapons in the upper sky war. The first is a lock system that hits easily though it is low power. The second is a usual bullet that does not hit easily though is high power. And, large magic attacks powerfully without fail. You defeat enemies who crowd the sky by making good use of them.

Score RankingStory and Character Score (7/10)

The outlook on the world is dark. It is a wonderful game. However, it is difficult to give it a high score because it gives the player a very mysterious feeling.

Gameplay Score (9/10)

The exhilaration one feels for "Musou" series is present, and are still tedious, and systems do not allow it to be felt. The new elements of magic and dragons are wonderful.

Graphics Score (10/10)

The overall outlook on the work and design of the world is very wonderful. The dragon is especially wonderful.

Music and Sound Score (9/10)

Famous classical music tunes are arranged and used as BGM. The music has the power to invite the player to the world of the game and also the outlook of the game world.

Controls Score (9/10)

There is a free mode, and even degrees of the stage done once can be done many times in this mode. It is also possible to foster the character in this mode, and to use it in the scenario.

Performance/ loading Score (8/10)

This score is not high, as it is part of the ultimate series. The game is quite early for its time, so the load times are quite long. The screen also sometimes lags during combat or other processing times.

Difficulty Score (5/10)

It is necessary to note that the combat method is different in the ground and in the air. Especially, there is a possibility of dying with surprising swiftness when riding on the dragon in the ground battle. It is possible to enjoy it especially without trouble if you become accustomed. However, the latter half of the game has very strong enemies.

Learning curve Score (8/10)

The game is not difficult, so the player can become accustomed at once.

Originality Score (9/10)

The combat system is wonderful, taking magic there with the dragon, and getting the one that is already. It is a scenario that is wonderful above all else in this game. The pros and cons of the game do not continue. The game shows love for a favorite person, and also shows the unpleasant work of a hated person.

The GoodThe battle is wonderful. You can have a new experience of fighting against a large army on a dragon.

The BadThe outlook on the world is dark.

Summary I recommend this game to someone who likes dark fantasy. I would never recommend this game to a person who dislikes dark stories.

Fushigi no Dungeon2 : Fuurai no Shiren DS

Developer: Chun soft Publisher: SEGA

Price: 5,040 yenRelease: December 14th, 2006Reviewer: Takenobu Kazuma

Score:

83/1001. Story and Character (5/10)

The aim of this game is "Go to Table Mountain and Meet Golden Condor". The story hardly appears while playing a game. There are also not so many conversations, even though the character is attractive. 2. Gameplay (10/10)

Every time you play this game, this game gives you dramas and thrills. 3. Graphics (7/10)

This game is a port of "Fushigi no Dungeon2 - Fuurai no Shiren(SNES)", so the graphics are retro.

4. Music and Sound (8/10)

The Music composer is "KOUICHI SUGIYAMA"(The DQ's). The songs are very beautiful and impressive but they have a PCM source. 5. Controls (9/10)

There are many shortcuts, and you can see them anytime. At first, the DS's controlling is not so good. 6. Online/multiplayer/other (10/10)

There are online rescue, enrescue, WiFi ranking, and many kinds of Records.7. Comfort/performance/loading (9\10)

Playing is very comfortable, and it loads very quickly. But you must pay attention to the DS battery. If the battery runs out while playing, that will be considered as dying in the dungeon. 8. Difficulty (8/10)

If "Shiren" dies, his Level becomes 1, and all items are lost. You can save items only in the stockroom. In this port, "Shiren DS" is easier than SNES's. 9. Learning curve (from easy to difficult learning) (7/10)

Maybe you will have some troubles in the first several hours, but you will enjoy it after that. 10. Originality (9/10)

This game is Rogue-Like game. All Japanese Rogue-like games (e.g., Chocobo's dungeon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon) are based on "Fuurai no Shiren".

■ Fuurai no Shiren DS reviewsThis is a game that has continued to receive full support in the part that the player can be amused with the process of the adventure. The content of the game is "Shiren searches for the dungeon of different automatic generation whenever playing, and reaches the final floor (and, defeat the boss)".When going out to the adventure for the first time, the only property Shiren has is the rice ball (food) to satisfy his hunger. Finally, Shiren has weapons, the shield or neither bracelet with a special effect nor many of a convenient item at all, they are found in the dungeon of automatic generation, and he takes it after defeating the final boss.By the way, Shiren's physical strength recovers little by little in exchange for "hunger" that decreases because it strolls in the dungeon though the medical herb to cure the wound is often not able to be picked up. That is, the physical strength that decreases because of the combat in this side has recovered completely as long as you don't meet the monster very frequently while strolling in the dungeon. Moreover, this game is turn-based movement and combat system, so Shiren moves by one step while the monster in the dungeon also moves one step, and Shiren has the adjacent monster, if Shiren does the attack etc, the monster also attacks in the following turn.Turns can be passed (without moving in the place) in the action, the turn can keep being consumed only by repeating the action (holding the button used to pass a turn), and physical strength can be recovered by substituting hunger by consuming the turn. Shiren's HP cannot become 0 as long as the monster is not so strong. One of this game's keywords is "Repetition." The story starts from the place "post station in the valley", and Shiren who is the player advances the adventure aiming at "Table Mountain" where the Golden Condor lives. When Siren falls during the adventure, the level becomes 1, the status becomes like the initial one, all items are lost, and the player returns tothe Post station in the valley. And, Shiren aims at Table Mountain again, and he falls, returns, and aims... so the adventure is repeated on countless occasions. There are 30 floors to Table Mountain from the Post station in the Village, and there are break points (bamboo village, town on the top of mountain and some others) to rest at. For instance, Shiren leaves the Post station, passes the first dungeon, taking a rest in the bamboo village, challenges next dungeon, has a break in the town at the top of the mountain, and then goes to the next dungeon. And, the change takes place little by little in the stage, thevillage, and the town while repeating the failure and the challenge. The events are mostly generated in the stage, the

village, and the town starting with the conversation event with NPC such as "Oryuu: the blinding" who is met in the dungeon, and finally, the NPC becomes a companion, and a valuable item is obtained. And, the game deepens by these events.Shiren can adventure in the dungeon with an NPC after the NPC becomes a companion. The NPC follows Shiren and if they meet a monster, the NPC fights against the monster because ofan unique idea, and supports Shiren. Because the NPC has HP, if you make an NPC overwork, the NPC is exhausted and falls.Shiren can recover the NPC by throwing "healing herb" or some other item to the NPC. In this situation, you should make the NPC a decoy in order to survive or fight easier. As a result, the NPC joins and the fight with the monster that was mere "Combat" evolves to "Strategy".Many items can be obtained through events, for example, the "Vase of the combine" appears, and the player is able to combine weapons and the shields. The point of this "combine" system is that players can make a sword "effective with the ghosts and the dragons" by combining swords "effective with the ghosts" and "effective with the dragons".The combine system greatly develops this game.

■ Pure unfortune is a real thrillAs mentioned before, all items in the inventory are lost when Shiren dies. Regardless of how rare or important the item is, they are lost when Shiren dies. But, items in the stockroom are an exception. Items in the stockroom are safe if Shiren dies. So when you are worried about the next adventure or are not sure of the goal, you can protect items by putting these in stockrooms. And, when you clear the dungeon, you can bring all the items you have back to the post station in the valley. When you go to the adventure again, the strength of Shiren becomes like the beginning one, but items gained when you finished a stage are very powerful, so you can clear the dungeon easily. Therefore, the main pattern of tempered swords or shields by "Vase of combine" is through using a storeroom. You should keep important strengthening weapons in the stockroom when you collect weapons for combining and the vase of combine, and combining in stockroom again and again, and keep in stockroom. Finally, you will obtain the strongest weapon for you. When you check its power, you will feel a sense of achievement and joy. However, the tragedy is that the weapon or shield you spent much time on can be lost in a moment. You may step into the Monster House in which there are many strong monsters. The monster may change your weapon into a rice ball, flip your weapon into a waterway, or hypnotize you to put in the vase of combine. Very trivial matters can trigger loss. You will be sad, full of regret, or just mad. But most losses happen by your careless mistakes, and the rest is by pure misfortune.

Gatcharoku ガチャろく

89/100

Developer: Sony Computer EntertainmentPublisher: Sony Computer EntertainmentPrice: 5800 yen (new), 3500 yen (used) (Value: 7/10)Released: 12/05/02System: PlayStation 2 (Japanese)Official Site: http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/gacha/Players: 1-4 (requires multitap)Reviewer: Jonathan deHaan

Outstanding blasts of Japanese culture.

The Good: 50 innovative mini games with fun slants on life in Japan.

The Bad: The board game mode is a little overly complex. The sound effects quickly get old.

Overall description/introduction

There are two modes: story and mini-game mode.

In the mini-game mode, the players climb steps to a temple. The steps they climb are directly related to the number of syllables in the theme of the mini game they just won (i.e., winning a sushi-eating game lets you climb two steps, saying "su"-"shi"). The games use both normal and ludicrous themes from Japanese "life:" from rapidly clicking the lead out of a mechanical pencil to battling atop giant salt-spitting slugs in a sumo ring.

In the story (board game) mode, players take turns moving spaces around a map (common areas in Japan) and collecting money and using items to advance themselves or thwart opponents. Many board modes of video games (e.g., Mario Party) are incredibly boring. Gatcharoku tries to improve the mode by letting the players not rolling dice play mini games in a corner of the screen. This makes for a fun, chaotic atmosphere. However, managing the many items and remembering locations of things (e.g., traps) on the board can be a little overwhelming.

Controls10/10The game uses the Dual Shock 2 controller's analog sticks in innovative ways. For example, you pull your thumbs down on both sticks to pull toilet paper off a roll with two on-screen hands. Also, the action of pressing a button or moving a stick always seems very closely linked with the on-screen action (e.g., the controls are finely tuned to make you really concentrate on the simultaneous position and action of your thumbs in the before mentioned game) You always feel like you're directly controlling the game or avatar. The controls feel great in every mini game.

Online/multiplayer/other options9/10Everything's more fun with friends, and Gatcharoku's zany mini games make everyone laugh. However, if one player has played a certain game before, it seems too easy for them to beat novices. The inclusion of saved characters with handicaps (as in Wii Sports) might have slightly improved the multiplayer modes. There is no online play mode.

8

Page 9: Made in Japan: 2009 Akabeko Game Issue

Story and Characters9/10Essentially, Gatcharoku is the story of various citizens who are tricked by a bizarre woman (the host of the board game) into trekking all over Japan to win money. There are 7 characters to choose from (all have the same gameplay abilities): a little boy, a drunk businessman, a robot, a ninja, a construction worker, a frog, and a young girl in heavy make-up.

Gameplay9/10There is always something to keep the player engaged, between managing resources or battling in a mini game. However, in the mini game mode, the normally quick rhythm of play can sometimes be dragged down by a few drawn-out mini games (e.g., a money matching game, or a bizarre 2D shooter). Some of the best mini games include:- typhoon reporting on the docks (moving the analog stick to block the changing wind with an umbrella)- affixing stamps to New Year's card using the saliva of a sleeping woman- making a demon cry by sticking clothes pins on his face

Graphics10/10Gacharoku uses a variety of visual styles well; the characters and several games use heavily outlined and brightly-colored elements and these are balanced by carefully modeled or photographed cultural icons. The art style matches the energetic play.

Music and Sound7/10The music and sounds are upbeat and the character's utterances are initially very entertaining. However, the characters only say a few things, so the sounds can become a little annoying the longer you play.

Comfort/performance/loading10/10Gatcharoku loads quickly and never lags.

Difficulty and Learning Curve8/10The board game mode is a little difficult for novices, and it's sometimes difficult to understand exactly how the controls work in a certain mini game. However, none of the mini games are so difficult as to make them unplayable or altogether frustrating.

Originality10/10There are dozens of collections of mini games on the market, but Gatcharoku's crazy characters and Japanese-themed battles make this game stand out. Gatcharoku's controls also help make it more unique; the games are about accuracy, rather than most collections' mindless mashing.

SummaryGatcharoku is an extraordinary collection, and should be in any Japan-o-phile's game library.

Total Score : 81.2 /100Good Points○We can fight using Wifi.〇My character can be customized. 〇 The explanation of the tutorial is comprehensible. 〇 There are a lot of extra features. Bad Points 〇Many of the maps are too similar. More devices should be used on the maps.〇 The CPU dice rolls are often unfair.

Review about OPERATIVENESSI didn't expect that the touch pen is hardly used to play the game. The system is original; however, the games are simple, and some little things felt inconvenient. The menus are quick and easily understood due to illustrations and a help system. Some choices were complex and I needed to be hesitant because I didn't understand what to do. This was a little troublesome, but it is a very playable game and can be finished comfortably. Review about VISUALIt is good, and the polygon model of each character expresses, and might be a device of individuality also for the reduction of the characters graphic other than my Teban to make the screen or more easy to see. Review about SOUNDMost of the music is from the "Super Mario" and "Dragon Quest" series, and the user can feel quite nostalgic. The music is suitable for the mysterious outlook of the world, and the user can feel a strange yet happy sense of playing in the various stages due to the music. Various sound effects are also taken from the original series, such as Gust or leveling up. Review about SATISFATION RATINGThis game doesn't change much from the traditional "roll the dice, advance, earn money" formula, but I like not having to fiddle too much and the base system and technology are very good. Review about ORIGINALITYSystem..production..yell..enter..this..Composition..for..do..including..element..enhancement..odd.The map and the character that can use "Tour mode" that is the main mode by fighting in the map along a specific theme, and winning in other modes increase.

My ReviewBecause two series are used, there is a large number of characters to chose from. Although the original characters are used, the ability to substitute clothes enhances the game. The CPU often has very good dice rolls, although this may be unavoidable in a board game. This game, with many elements in the solo mode, and great fighting modes against friends, is highly recommendable.

Monsters high on the food chain eat those below them. So,you have to consider the food chain.

The theme of this game is "videotope".At first, do you know "Biotope" ?A biotope is a nest of little creatures. These are often found in man's living space. However,it has decreased by environmental development.

So, in this game, Dungeon = Biotope ,Monsters = creatures ,Monsters = creatures .So, this video game was constructed as a video game that stops development (=Brave persons) "videotope"! === Magazine Information ===

Learn more at http://www.u aizu.ac.jp-
