STORM SCAMS Beware of scammers attempting to profit from relief efforts. If you are not familiar with a charitable organization and how they use their money you can verify what percentage of their income goes to the charity’s purpose on CharityNavigator.org. The Office of the Attorney General also provides these additional tips on how to avoid a fake charity scam: Do not feel pressured to give money or financial

information over the phone. Beware of sound alike charities and phony websites. Be cautious of social media requests for donations.

Although some may be legitimate, consumers need to verify before making donations.

Ask solicitors what percentage of donations will be given to the relief effort. By law, the solicitor must tell you if you ask.

Additional research tools and resources, including a list of active charitable campaigns in Kentucky are available on the Attorney General’s website, http://ag.ky.gov/.

KEHA State Meeting, May 7-9th, 2018 - Louisville, KY.

Hello October!

Looking Back: Personally visiting homemaker clubs has been a desire as well as a goal for me. Making visits to the Madison County Extension Homemaker Clubs in September has been an enjoyable experience that has allowed the County President, Vice-President and club members to become better acquainted. This also gave us an opportunity to share some of our concerns and gain ideas and suggestions from club members. All clubs were very receptive and we had wonderful participation. I can't say enough about the beautiful table decorations and tasty food that was served. There are wonderful cooks in Madison County. On September 6th we attended Madison CoOp Club and received instructions from Mary Sutton on how to make cloth coasters and left with beautiful red and green coasters. Thank you for providing a friendly face, a great attitude and a hearty welcome. We had a great turn out for our officer and chair training. My sincere thanks to all who attended and participated. Our thanks to mailbox members who are not able to be club members. You help make our organization outstanding. Please renew your membership. Future outlook: Looking forward to visiting more homemaker clubs and specialty clubs/groups in the months of October and November. The Bluegrass Area Fall Craft Festival is being held again this year in Madison County. Hope to see you there. This is a good time to make Christmas gifts. Our Vice President, Connie Howe, and her committee have been working on new member recruitment for this homemaker year. Please keep in mind, "Each One Bring One," and our "3 for 3" goal. Please do your best in inviting new members. Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful sunshiny and cooler days we are having. Wishing you a harvest of smiles and warm moments with friends and family. Let this fall be a time to gather the things that bring you comfort and joy. Joyce Cole, President

KEHA INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM I am requesting our clubs to work hard to collect “Coins for Change“ money this year so Madison County may be selected to host an exchange homemaker from the Philippines in 2018-2019. Leoni Mundelius, our KEHA International Chairperson, is from the Philippines. She will select three counties to host an exchange homemaker from the Philippines based on the three counties who collect the most “Coins for Change” in 2017-2018. The county may decide how long we wish to host the homemaker and we would be expected to identify a family for that Philippine homemaker to live with during some of her time in our country. It would be a very beneficial experience for our county homemakers to host this person. Please open you hearts and your pocketbooks to make this possible for Madison County to be one of the counties selected to host a Philippine Homemaker. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 582-9530.

Tips for Fall Vegetables: Choose a variety of colorful veggies prepared in healthful ways: steamed, sautéed, roasted or raw. Buy vegetables that are in season for best flavor and at a lower cost. Check your local supermarket specials for the best-in-season buys or visit the Farmers’ Market as they continue to stay open through fall. Here’s a warm fall salad recipe to try — and would be good served as a side for chicken or pork.
