Chap 5: Disengaged Dad’ Disorder (DDD)

Thousands of Boys are growing up without a DAD..

When things don’t go well…then do what most

High School Boys do……Disengage and Withdrawn

Each of these boys has a Huge Emotional Story

to tell !!

Page 10: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Why am I Here…What is the GOAL ??

We have a Huge Problem in Special Education… with males and IQ Scores above 70…..in

Michigan High Schools…we SIMPLY CANNOT GET

THIS POPULATION TO GRADUATE !!

AND IT IS EXAMINED AS A DROPOUT CRISES…

BUT IT IS A CLEAR GENDER ISSUE !! NOT IDENTIFIED AS SUCH….

Page 11: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Special Education and Dropouts

65 Michigan High School Students will TERMINATE

High School Today. Based on 11% of the total number of Special Education students in

Michigan High Schools of the 68 only 11 should be Special Education. BUT TODAY of the 68 nearly 40% will be Special Education students or 27 students…this is a education FAILURE…

Page 14: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Boys in America 2014

Boys in America are the most aggressive and violent

of any First World Country ! Today a Boy will shoot someone to

Death in the State of Michigan And Since Sandy Hook 54 School Shooting’s all doneby boys over age 14 !!

Page 17: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

American HS & MS mission is CLEAR….???

Sort and Select Students….!!!

Therefore we have winners and losers…S/E Students and At Risk Students are often

on the short side…Thus rather than lose…it is easier to

dropout….!

Page 18: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Standards of BOY performance in Schools

WE HAVE IT ALL WRONG….!!

K-12 and Social Justice Issues…

Do we in the K-12 sector connect the dots on drop-outs and costs….??

Generally NOT….Currently we have 55,000 males locked up in the State of MI. Prison System at a cost of 2.0

billion per year or 22% of Michigan ENTIRE state

budget goes to the Dept. of Corrections (2nd Highest in

US) Note: As of 2014

Five Major Reasons Why We have Failed XY

R1……The WARLOCK GENE

R2…..Lack of Motor Movement

R3…..Failure to Teach to Brain Difference XX v. XY

R4…. Little Male Role Models in PK-5

R5…..We Teach to IQ NOT EQ !!!

Page 25: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

The WarLOCK Gene

10,000 Years of Wars…..started by XYGuns and Violence are part way of LifeIMAGES in Many places of Glass….support our self destructive waysA Society Built on outdated Stereotype’sIt begins with lack of Movement and

Disconnection First steps in HS Dropout…….Boys/Men Want Power !!!

Page 26: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Lack of Movement

Schools promote instruction defined by the state….

This is a new concept !!! Auditory Method of Instruction….(D-)What has happened to recess in PK-5 ???? 3 times a day to 1 short at LunchIntellectual Power is the Future NOT Physical Power….Parents have not learned this….Fine Motor Skills are slow go for XY (PK-4)

Page 27: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Brain Differences XY v XX

XY v XX have two different Brain Development Rates………………..

Girls Start faster and end sooner Girls think more and act Less Girls write better early and process Quicker Girls have less connections between left

and right brains…. Schools have MATCHED Instruction to GIRLS…..

Page 28: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

Role Models in ES

XX Teachers Everywhere……………..

NO Sports in ES…………….

NO Supervision on the Cheese Wagon………….

NO Recess………………

Page 29: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

PK -12 Teach to IQ NOT EQ

13 years of FFF*

Page 32: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

How do we get there ???

TO KEEP At RISK and SPECIAL EDUCATION BOYS IN SCHOOL…THEN NEED the Following:

1. Most Likely a PC2. A Home Base Advocate supporter at

SCHOOL3. A NICHE TO KEEP THE EGO GOING

4. 5 Years of HS if Needed and GREAT T/P

Page 33: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy

BEFORE ANY INSTRUCTION ??

START FROM SCRATCH !!!

THIS MEANS STRUGGLING BOYS NEED AN EGO NICHE ABOVE ALL ELSE !! INSTRUCTION IS MEANINGLESS IF THE FRAGILE EGO IS NOT ADRESSED !!

FORGET THE IEP GOALS UNTIL THE FRAGILE EGO HAS A IDENTIDY

Page 34: MAEO 2015 DERRICK FRIES PH.D. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DFRIES@EMICH.EDU 248-941-1365 Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great American Tragedy
