HORROR MAGAZINE ANALYSIS 3

Page 2: Magazine analysis 3

MAIN IMAGEThe main image focuses on a medium close up used to reveal the face and some body. This shot perfectly frames the figure and allows the audience to see the darkness behind he character. The image depicts a mysterious, dark and demonic looking figure holding a candle, placed in the lower middle section of the page. The image conveys to the audience that the genre is horror as it uses a dark colour scheme. It is obvious that the character is the antagonist due to the overall sinister clothing and mutated face (use of low- key lighting). She appears to be wearing a black veil, which is conventional to wear at funerals which connotes death, a typical theme in horror movies. She appears to be holding a candle which leaves the audience wondering what the significance of light is. The fact that viewers are unable to see her eyes, gives the character an ominous and demonic look, implying she is either possessed or a dark spirit.

LAYOUTThe layout of this magazine is again very conventional as the main image is place in the centre with additional information placed around it. The magazine targets specifically horror fans. This is shown clearly as the film strip along the bottom features freeze frames include Scream and other horror films. The mast head Fangoria uses is the conventional colour scheme brought by the Insidious title. Fangoria typically keeps up brand identity by ensuring their main theme colours are white and red. This could be to express the genre of film they present as red connotes with blood and danger, where as white symbolises purity and innocence, which is a common theme in Horror films of all sub genres. The letters are pointed again linking to horror and the idea of sharp blades and weapons. The use of synergy is very effective here between Fangoria and Insidious; this is done through cross media marketing. When an audience see this Insidious antagonist on the front cover they will be drawn to it making them curious to what the film is about. This is beneficial for the company company who make Fangoria as it sells more magazines and increases circulation. This is also good promotion for Insidious as Fangoria magazine will be shown on display in plenty of stores so it will get recognition. Also Fangoria magazine has an existing target market which are Horror fanatics. This will inform them about Insidious and if they’re hard-core Horror fan’s they will most likely buy tickets to watch the movie.
