ORIGINS• The idea of creating Polish airlines was born right after the
war, in 1918. • The first Polish airline Aerolot was formed in 1921 in Poznań. • Aerolot’s main rival was Aero founded in 1925 in Warsaw. • At the end of 1928 both companies merged and formed LOT
Polish Airlines, owned by the government.
Both Aerolot and Aero had excellent pilots. The term „Polnisches Wetter” was created in Vienna and described the weather so bad that only Polish pilots were able to fly in it.

• LOT offered services to the main cities of Poland, the first international flight was to Vienna(1929).• In 1930 LOT was accepted into the International Air

officially recognised. • In 1934 LOT’s headquarters were established at the newly
created Warsaw Okęcie Airport. (Before Pole Mokotowskie was the base of the company)• In 1938 LOT carried out a transatlantic test flight.
• During the Second World War 16 of LOT’s aircrafts were detained in Romania and the rest had been destroyed. • All the airports and flight equipment was destroyed.
During the People’s Republic• The LOT airlines were re-established on March,10 1945.• The same year both domestic and international services restarted. • At first LOT acquired Western and Soviet airplanes. However, with
time Soviet-produced aircrafts started dominating the fleet. • In 1961 routes to Africa and the Middle East were created. • Regular transatlantic services to New York were established in
1973. In 1955 LOT for the first time transported over milion passengers. After the war first female flight attendants were trained.
1981-2001• In autumn, 1981 air transportation collapsed and all
Western airlines on December 13 suspended their connections with Warsaw (the martial law was declared). • In 1988 LOT created its longest connection to Singapore.• Since 1988 LOT began buying Western aircrafts, mainly
Boeings. • In 1992 LOT took a step toward partial privatisation. • In 2001 LOT transported over 3 million passengers.
• In the 2000s LOT started many new routes to Armenia, Lebanon, Estonia, Russia, Slovakia, Georgia, Syria. • In 2010 it cancelled flights between Kraków and Chicago
