Premier League Review Eloise Sobels and Tess Reynolds both scored hat-tricks as the Burnside ladies dominated lowly Forestville 8-0 at the Pines on Saturday afternoon, whilst at Port Adelaide on Sunday, Grange Royal’s improved form continued with a 3-0 drubbing of the Seacliff Tigers girls. Port Adelaide’s ladies, missing several key strikers, scored a hard-fought 2-0 win at Woodville on Saturday afternoon, to clinch the McGrath-Phillips trophy resoundingly in favour of the Magpies, and make Woodville’s task of sneaking in the final four even more difficult. Uni’s girls consolidated 3rd with a solid 2-1 win over the Zuluettes at Uni on Saturday afternoon, in an attacking display of hockey. The Uni v North East men’s fixture was punctuated by a second half double yellow/red card to the Zulu’s Peter Nugent. AUHC were under strength with 4 regular players unavailable due to injury, the game was played at a high tempo throughout, both teams demonstrating good attacking hockey. Uni went 1 goal up with a well taken short corner, the Zulu’s held their structure extremely well even though 1 short and scored the next 2 goals, AUHC had an opportunity to score with short corner at full time but the shot was just wide, North East deserving of a good hard fought win 3-2. Most would have predicted a one-sided affair at Woodville between the Magpies and the home side, given their positions on the ladder, but Woodville were in the fixture for most of the match before a few late goals by Port saw the score blow out to 7-3, Beau Aliskauskas and Harry Johns playing well for the visitors, while the Woodville custodian also withstood many shots. Cameron Joyce also notched a hat trick. The open nature of the competition was again on-show in Burnside’s 3-2 win against 3rd placed Forestville, denting their hopes of a top two finish. Grange Royals men again showed signs of their potential in their fast-paced 2-2 draw with Seacliff at Port Adelaide on Sunday, which keeps the race for fourth open between the Tigers and the Peas (bye). Grange scored early through a penalty stroke, Seacliff equalising soon after through a defensive mix-up by the young Sea Eagles defence. The rest of the match saw both sides have their chances, Grange having an awarded penalty stroke downgraded to a penalty corner once the umpires consulted. The last 5 minutes saw some frenetic action at both ends, with Seacliff scoring an outstanding field goal (deflection) from a break-away to seemingly have snatched the win, but the game had one last drama, as Grange earnt a last-minute penalty stroke, Daniel Pena converting his second stroke of the day to share the points at 2-2. Next Wednesday sees Adelaide and Forestville clash in a crucial men’s fixture. This Sunday at Adelaide also sees the Peas take on the Seacliff Tigers in a pivotal clash for the final finals spot. TARGETED AREA CLINIC Hockey SA wishes to invite all interested players to attend the August TAC focusing on Goal Scoring Skills Friday 17th August, 2012 State Hockey Centre, Main North Road, Gepps Cross 4.45pm – 5.45pm Athletes are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the session and will require only their Hockey Equipment and a drink bottle. Cost: $10 per session (cash payment only on night of training). Players will receive technical coaching from current and former elite players focusing on goal scoring skills. Players are asked to confirm their attendance by email to geoff.mills@hockeysa.com.au

U12 SAPSASA SAPSASA Australian 12 and Under Hockey Championships were held at Port Adelaide last week in conjunction with The Pines. There were lots of hungry mouths to feed over the three and a half days and our club did a roaring trade in the canteen. I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time to come and help in the canteen. Without the help of Ilona Flockhart, Lewis Hart, Mary-Ann Higgins, Lisa Kitto, Chris Abineri, Liza Manskey & Lib Robbins we would not have been able to provide such good service and excellent food to those attending the championships. Thanks also to Ian Haley who looked after the umpires at our ground and did a lot of work in maintaining the ground during the championship. Well done to Kloe Schiller and Georgia London (pictured right) who competed in the tournament. Sue Kitto.

PADHC Facility Upgrade

The concept plan for the PADHC facility upgrade has now been completed, big thanks to Sarah Stephen for her help. Here is a sneak peak of the plans which can also be viewed at the clubrooms. A huge fundraising drive will be required to help get this project running so WATCH THIS SPACE..!

. Olympics update

Kookaburras claim bronze Hockeyroos secure 5th place

PADHC’S connection with men’s hockey Olympic Gold Medal achievement

Whilst everyone would be disappointed with the result of the Kookaburras with a bronze medal in London, the Port Adelaide Hockey Club were represented in the Olympic final by former elite club player Andrew Meredith.

Andrew, who has been based in Europe as a player and coach since 1997, has been the Assistant Coach of the men’s German National team since November 2004. During this time his trophy cabinet includes 2 Olympic Gold Medals

(Beijing, 2008 and London 2012), 1 World Cup Gold Medal (Monchengladbach, 2006), 1 European Championship Gold Medal (Monchengladbach, 2011), 1 Champions Trophy Gold Medal (Kuala Lumpur, 2007), as well as 4 Silver Medals (FIH and European tournaments), and 1 Bronze Medal (European Championship).

In his time in Europe he has played club hockey in Scotland, Netherlands and Germany. With his premature retirement from playing due to a knee injury, he switched to coaching and has coached at 2 clubs both in Netherlands (Stichtsche and HGC) and Germany (Gladbacher and Der Club an der Alster). He plans to return to club coaching in Germany this year in Hamburg. In addition he has been involved as a High Performance Consultant with South Africa (men’s and women’s nationals teams), Belgium (senior and U21 national teams), Singapore (men – Asian Games and Youth Olympic Games), other German teams (National senior women, men’s U21 and U18 teams).

He is an FIH High Performance Coach Grade I and is part of the FIH World Coach Development Program Seminar Conductor and Lecturer. He was an FIH Coaching Ambassador for ‘International Year of the Youth’ program. Andrew continues to follow the fortunes of the Club on a weekly basis during the season and is in regular contact with old club mates.
