Maia’s pastMaia’s past
Maia was a fertile land with a rich agriculture and supplied the city of Porto with many basic products such as food or linen used to make sails for the many boats that departed from Porto’s harbour.
Maia has lost much of its rural character and become the most important industrial area of the region.
It is also a modern urban space with a lot of sport, cultural, and other leisure facilities.
Local policies have been putting a special emphasis on health and quality of life promotion as a way to prove the old “maiato” folk saying: Just smile, you’re in Maia.
