7.2.1 Main Steam Isolation Valve Market, UAE, Nuclear Power Generation

In the UAE, thermal is the only significant source of power, and is categorized into gas and oil-

based electricity production. Gas dominates the energy mix, contributing XX% of the total, while

solar PV and oil-based electricity production account for less than XX%. The country’s evident

need to diversify its energy mix and reduce its domestic fossil fuel consumption is pushing the UAE

towards nuclear power.

The first unit of the first NPP in the UAE is expected to come online in 2017, with one reactor to be

built each year after that until 2020. A total of four nuclear reactors are expected to be operating by

2020, with an aggregate nuclear installed capacity of XX GW. The contract was awarded to the

South Korean agency KEPCO, ahead of three other players from France, Japan and the US, due

to low construction costs, demonstration of high capacity factors, and short construction time. The

contract also includes the supply of fuel for all XX units.





Nuclear installed capacity and generation are expected to grow steadily from 2017, when the

country’s first reactor is scheduled to come online, but to plateau after 2020, when all four planned

reactors have come online. Nuclear capacity and generation are expected to reach XX GW and XX

TWh by 2025.
