In fact he was the first man to automate the producon of chocolate, which enabled him to sell it at a lower price. When he died, his grandson, Alexandre-Louis Cailler decided to take over the factory, which he wished to expand. One day as he was walk- ing in the vicinity of Broc in Gruyère, he found the most suitable site for locang the new plant, as a railway line passed nearby and the milk of the local cows was excellent. A year later, in 1899, the Broc factory opened its doors. Very soon he introduced a modificaon in the producon of the chocolate, making it with milk and not powder chocolate combined with water, which was the pracce hitherto. In 1911, the company was called "Peter, Cailler, Kohler, Chocolats Suisses S.A.". In 1929, Nestlé bought the company from Peter to form Chocolats Peter, Cailler, Kohler, Nestlé.1923 saw the invenon of, Frigor a filled chocolate. In 1929, Cailler merged with Nestlé. The sole producon site of the Cailler brand is in Broc, employing over 400 staff in Gruyère and producing all the group’s brands for the whole world The retrofit of the Cavemil 600 The machine serves to mould and condion the bars of filled choco- late (Frigor, Carrés Nespresso). In 2015 this line had been operang for over 30 years. In order to transfer the volumes produced onto another line which was to be set aside, it was necessary to secure the control-command part of the Cavemil 600, which had become obsolete. The investment was also jusfied by the need for upgrad- ing to Nestlé standards (zero access, Alan Bradley technological plaorm). ALPS Automaon provided the studies and circuit dia- grams. They took care of the dismantling, evacuaon as well as recy- cling of the old control and power cabinets. They handled the pro- ducon of the new cells, workshop tests, localisaon, installaon and commissioning on site. Of course ALPS Automaon also handled all the programming of the different elements and components. The result met the expectaons of Nestlé Chocolats Cailler. The produc- on stoppage deadlines were respected without overruns, as was the inial budget Frédéric Michel, MES, E&A Manager at Nestlé Suisse, explains: ‘’ALPS Automaon were selected thanks to their knowledge of Nestlé’s habits, the size of the teams to be deployed on such a project (short dead- line, minimum producon outage) and thanks to the technical skills of the engineers (in Rockwell Auto- maon) and their proven ‘’machines’ ’experse on other projects carried out in the past. Jose Pariona, Project Engineer concludes: ‘ALPS Automaon accepted a major chal- lenge in terms of development engineering and deadlines. During the detail phase, ALPS collaborated closely and proacvely with our factory’s Electricity and Automaon Department. During the installaon and commissioning phase, the ALPS Automaon staff respected the security and hygiene rules of our site. Several visits to the moulding line confirmed their commitment.
