Make and Take Workbox

Megan Robins-Special Education Coordinator

3 Key Elements

bull Any type of visual structure should include the followingbull 1 instructions-the student must understand what is expected instructions

will not always be written words or a set of steps (ie jigs outlining color-coding left to right etc)

bull 2 organization-materials and space needed to complete the task (containers baggies trays boundaries on table etc)

bull 3 clarity-understanding the sequence and relevant details (highlighting color coding labeling basic materials etc)

Preparation

bull Use a daily visual schedule that includes workbox tasks

bull Prepare tasksworkboxes before the studentrsquos day begins so that instructionwork time is not spent getting the next activity ready

bull Only introduce the itemscards in the workbox that you expect the student to complete

bull For workboxes that require the student to put something together or assemble something do not allow them to take it apart after the task is complete

bull The student puts finished workboxes away in a finished basket ndash they needs to do this individually

Finished

Goals of a Workbox System

bull The student can independently complete the task

bull The student should see the necessary components of the task as a unit

bull The student should be able to generalize information learned from one environment to another
