With the new curriculummoving awayfrom prescribing content to focusingon the purpose of learning, teachersare free to choose their own contentand context.

At the same time teachers need to findtheWelsh perspective and develop acurriculum that is made inWales forWales, and enable pupils to becomecreators rather than consumers ofdigital content.

Transforming from one style ofcurriculum to another is a verydifficult time –museums and culturalorganisations are here to help! Theyhave lots of content and are keen forpupils to use it creatively to developtheir digital competence skills.

Museums, heritage and culturalvenues are really passionate aboutworking with contemporary contentas well as historical collections andsubjects. They have a role to representand collect the current world, not onlythe past. Exploring digital processfor learning with schools and youngpeople enables learners to engage withcollections, exhibitions and sites suchaslandscapes, buildings andmonuments, through an engaging and relevantdiscipline.

Creating digital content also createsan opportunity for children and youngpeople to share their interpretationsof stories and interests. Developing aninterest in historic and contemporaryculture in our young people ensuresthat there will be a generation to take onresponsibility for creating, funding andsafeguarding it in the future.

The possibilities are endless when itcomes to working with museums&generating creative digital projects. Here are a few simple ideas.

Before a visit: On-line digital resourcescan be used to research & plan a project.

During a visit: Learners can capture andgather information & speak to staff.

After a visit: Learners can use digitalresources and on-line collections tocreate their own digital content andinterpretation.

Simple activity ideas:Using faces to create digital characters. There aremany faces that can bephotographed during a visit or takenfrom on-line collections to createdigital stories & trails.

Use theMorpho App to create acontemporary story or your owninterpretationof history.

Edit the face and add narrative.

Then use HP reveal to augment thestory to a real statue or object orphotograph in school or your locality.

Many faces can also be found in on-linecollections like such as CollectionsOnline, ArtUK and People’s CollectionWales.

Create and script a filmLodge Hill Primary School created ashort film to tell the story of how schoolwere in Roman times when girls were notallowed to attend school. It was filmedusing an iPad and a low cost tripod thenedited using iMovie. The project wasdone as part of Museums Take-OverDay. A script outlinewas used to helpthe group create the script then film andperform the charactersand story.

Minecraft &MuseumsYsgol Treganna visited theNationalRoman LegionMuseum to work onplans for their Minecraft re-creationof the Roman Barracks at Caerleon. They askedMuseum staff questionsduring their visit and afterwards throughe-mail and Skype. They used detaileddrawings and plans to help them. Theythen created a film showing the wholeresearch, development andmakingprocess, plus a fly through of theirMinecraft creation. Their work andthe resources they used are on Hwb(see link below).

The People’s Collection website is allabout collecting history from everydaypeople. Often themost interestingstories come from finding out whatlife was like for everyday people. Thewebsite gathers images, documentsand recordings from community groups, schools and heritage organisationsacross Wales. It has thousands offascinating images and pupils cansearch the content directly fromHwb.

What’s unique about this website is thatit offers pupils the chance to becomecontemporary collectors and curatetheir own content. Whenundertakinga project about objects or interviewingsomeone in the community, workcreated can be added to the history ofWales. Schools can create their ownaccounts to document events and thehistory of their community. The site alsohas a great Learn section with lotsof resources - such as ‘Copyrightmadeeasy’.

The History of Wales Partnership is Wales’largest cultural organisations, workingtogether to createmore meaningfullearning packages for schools. Thesepartnerships work on themes suchat the First WorldWar and Age of thePrinces. Many of Wales biggest culturalorganisations have been working togetherto createmeaningful learning resources, many of which area available on Hwb.

Working more closely withamuseum, heritage orcultural venueStaff at museums are always happyto discuss ideas for projects and pointlearners towards resources. Someofthe easiest ways to get in touch is to usesocial media but e-mail, phone and faceto face can also be arranged. Video callscan also be arranged in advance to askthe expert any questions youmay haveabout a specific topic. Get the pupilsto think about specific questions thatperhaps they cannot find on-line.For example, whatmaterials were usedto build the barracks at Caerleon?to findmore information for aMinecraft project.

AnimationAnimation

Why use animation?Animation is an innovative way toencourage children to communicatestories, ideas and concepts in a creativeand original way. It can be particularlyuseful as a tool to encourage thecreativity of learners who find spellingand grammar a challenge or who benefitfrom process-based learning. Workingin this way liberates children fromdesk-based learning and enablesthem to concentrate on the storyand process of making instead.

Creating animations lends itself to groupworking, providing opportunities forcollaboration. Working together acrossabilities and peer groups helps to breakdown social and academic barriers. The making process involves sharingcreations with their peers and puttingcompleted work online. Animationalso provides an exciting and dynamicplatform to encourage learners togive interesting and engaging classpresentations, building confidenceand raising aspirations.

Through this process, learners alsodevelop useful skills for their futureeducation in later key stages andbeyond. With the availability of somanydifferent apps such as Thing Link,Explain Everything and somanymore, pupils and teachers alike will enliven thelearning experience while developingcritical creative skills throughoutthe journey.

What you will need:A goose neck iPad stand(suggested brand is Bestek)

iPad

Apps: I Can Animate and GreenScreen by Do Ink, Chatterpix,iMovie (other stopmotion appsare available but I Can Animate iseasy to use for all Key Stages)

Green screenmaterial / green cardfor the animation background

Good light source (a lamp in a lightcontrolled space is preferable toavoid shadows)

Paper cut characters / designs /3Dmodels to animate

Make it Digital | LearningResource Pack | Animation

Animated stories say a lot in a fewminutes and have a lasting impact with learners. It is the process of making an animation where the learning really happens; in theresearch, development, planning and creating that includes a huge amount of cross-curricular activity. A well-chosen theme can come from anywhere in the curriculum, where a hands on approach to subjectmatter engages all abilities and styles of learning.

2. Cut out the character andplace on thegreen screen. To animate the character, set up your ‘Field of Vision’ and ensureeverything for the shot is positionedcorrectly. Use Blu Tack to secure anythingthat will remain static to avoidmovement.

3. Now animate all the separate partsto create sense of movement.Limbs areindividuallymoved as required. Makecharacters jointedat elbows, kneesanklesand wrists to create realistic movements(depending on the learners abilities). The fewer joints the stiffer the characterwill be.

4. Apply the same principle to theeyesof a character. Use differenteyes, forexample, open, closed, left or right, tocreate expressions. Do the same to makethe character blink by removing eyescompletely from the face every 3-5 shots.Experiment with this until it becomesintuitive.

1. Create a jointed character to animateusing paper or card, adding colour asdesired. This can be simple or complexdepending on your learners and timescale. This project uses a simple app to make itspeak so there is no need to draw amouth!

NOTE:When not using Chatterpix, make three separate mouths thatwill be animated every 3-5 framesgiving the illusion of speaking mouthmovements (see picture opposite).

Onion Skinning:Onion skinning is the term used in 2Danimation creation for the technique ofbeing able to view a series of frames atonce for editingpurposes. This is a helpfultool to see how muchmovement is beingadded to the characters or object.

It’s normal for two images to be seenin the preview at the same time.I Can Animate supports Onion Skinning.

Use this technique to repositioncharacters, or the device, if eitheris inadvertently moved (which nodoubt will happen).

Experiment with backgrounds:To simplify the process and need for greenscreen backgrounds, animate on top of achosen background. The background isthen stuck downso it cannotmove. UseBlu Tack to secure or alternatively placea clear sheet of Perspex on top to weighit down. Then animate themovingcharacters and parts on top.

Add depth and perspective by raising thePerspex up and away from the backgroundto the desired height. Repeat this in layersto add evenmore depth, butmake sureto keep the iPad screen low enough forpupils to easily view the screen.

Frame by frame

When shooting footage, it may be requiredto delete or copy frames. Do this by placinga finger gently on the frame required on thetimeline. The iconswill be shown in orderfor selection.

In line with the Digital CompetencyFramework, it’s good practice to promotepositive use of the web and responsibledigital citizenship. Skills and valueslearnt through contributing to channelsand social-media, in a formal educationenvironment, will inevitably be used bypupilsat home, and later, for many, inthe work environment.

Facebook and YouTube are obviouschoices for sharing if the school hasan account. Refer to the school policybefore posting. A school or class YouTubechannel is a great investment andbecomes a place to archive work, evidencepupil progress, and also reaches a wideaudience. It can also be used by pupilsfor revision purposes if the contentis relevant.

Instagram is a popular app to promoteand guide audiences to creative digitalprojects. Use this alongside Twitter toshare and celebrate school projects.

Use social media to reach influentialpeople, role models and organisationssuch as politicians, charities, authors, scientists and artists. They may evenrespond to pupils with encouragement.

Learners becomemotivated, inspiredand findmore relevance andmeaningin their work when activities supportreal life actions.

Not all interviews need to bemadeinto films, why not try a podcastorradio show!

The voice over could be a writtenscript that is read out.

Add subtitles to a digital story toensure the story is accessible topeople who are hard of hearing.

Top tips:

When in iMovie, and unsure what abutton does, click thequestionmark(?) at the top of the screen. This willshow notes relating to each buttonandwhat it does.

Photos will automatically zoom, change this by clicking on the imagein the timeline and click Ken BurnsEnabled, so it will say KenBurnsDisabled.

Adjust the volume of the voice andthe thememusic by selecting it andclicking Volume. Listen a few timesto get the volume right.

Watch out for…

During the interview, listen out forany noises or background soundsthat could ruin your recording.

Let the interviewee finish whatthey are saying, don’t talk over theinterviewee ormake any soundswhile they’re speaking.

A storyteller may wish to changesomething that an interviewer is reallyhappy with, but be sure to listen towhat the storyteller wants – this isthe ethos of digital storytelling –it’s a collaboration, and that wayeveryone is happy.

Check the copyright of images ormusic. There’s lots of free placeson the internet now, so don’t takesomething that belongs to someoneelse, better still, make all the elementsof a digital story with the pupils!

Collage is similar to drawing or painting with paper, using rips, cuts and sticking tocreate a unique piece of art. This process often frees up the practice and idea creationfor pupils, and challenges perceptions of creating art and visuals using papers, fabricsand recycled materials. Collage can easily be 2D, 3D or incorporate elements of both.It creates a visual puzzle, forming an image and helpsmakers explore on perspective, composition and the imagination.
