September 2016 Volume 54, issue 9
Making Space to Reconnect
Maybe it's something about Labor Day - a day that we often celebrate a chance to relax from our busy work schedules. Maybe it's the fact that we've just resumed the school year and the church program year is about to begin. Whatever it is, I find that my mind for the second year in a row is dwelling on Sabbath rest. If you still have your copy of last year's September newsletter, or can find it archived online, you may find a little bit of what I write familiar, though I'm hopefully going in a different direction this time around. All the same, I commend that article to you if you would like to read further on Sabbath rest. But beyond rest, Sabbath is an opportunity for us to reconnect with one another. Sabbath is a place where we are invited to simply "be" in the presence of God's blessings, and we are invited to truly be present with those who are near us. I have to admit, when I allow myself an opportunity for Sabbath, especially Sabbath where I can simply be present with those I love, I do find that I am renewed and refreshed. But as relaxing as Sabbath can sound, finding that Sabbath rest is actually fairly hard work. I say it's hard work, because there's always something else that needs to be done. There's a meal to make, homework to do, or maybe there's that one last item from work that you need to make sure was done correctly. To actually take Sabbath rest takes commitment. You have to dedicate yourself to it, make it a part of your routine. I've suggested in the past that sometimes it's impossible to take a Sabbath for a whole day. But that doesn't mean that finding the moment of rest and reconnection isn't important. For some people it comes in the form of intentionality on a given night or several nights of the week. Maybe it's just a little time to talk with somebody you love and being able to take stock of the day, and how God was at work in your life? Regardless of what it looks like, there is always value in slowing down. There is value in connecting more intentionally with loved ones and with our creator. There is value in taking time to simply live into the presence of our relationships. So when the world constantly demands your attention, don't be afraid to occasionally say, "you can wait" to the not-so-urgent matters that often present themselves as far more urgent. For the things that are truly urgent are the relationships that we have established. Rely on God. Live into the fullness of relationship with others. And in the meantime, those things that seem far more urgent than they really are will find their proper place, and your life will be blessed far more fully. All we have to do is take the time to recognize the blessings that are already there. Peace in Christ,
Pastor Chris

WOW! 53 backpacks put together with donations from Messiah Members. We topped last year by 10+. The backpacks plus supplies (copier paper, etc) were equally divided between McCullum and Tomasita Elementary School. Backpack stuffers and helpers were: Pastor Chris Heller, Andy and Edna Jones, Jim Raquet, Chuck Danielson, and Betty Hauge. (Hope I didn’t forget anyone!) We look forward to “thank you’s” from the students and teachers. They will be posted on the bulletin boards and maybe in the October newsletter. Look for the joy of the students.
August 02 CLOTHING SWAP was a huge success this year. We had 200 + people from the community who came to get clothing. Messiah members and neighbors who helped were: Pat, Ruben, Suzanne Baca, the rest of the Baca family, Pastor Chris Heller, Susan Utegg, Betty Hauge, Rebecca Koeltzow, Anne Kelso. Irene and Gene Aldredge and Lynn Rathjen. Thank you, for all your hard work and generous hearts. This year, we collected more clothing from our mem-bers and neighbors than in the past years. The remainder of the clothing went to Albuquer-que Storehouse to help others in our community and the Storehouse was very grateful.

Thought I'd catch you up on our summer
adventure. We've been fixing up the summer home, visiting family and old friends, picking wild
berries and baking pies, and a little bit of fishing.
We are worshipping at the Lutheran Church that
my family has attended for 4 generations. When I was in high school, they still had Finnish
services. We walk .6 miles each way to get our mail. It's so quiet here, we tend to sleep an hour
longer everyday.
We've seen deer with fawns, a roughed grouse with chicks, and an eagle. A young moose has
been spotted nearby, but we haven't seen him
yet.
Life is grand! We are indeed blessed. Blessings,
Ron and Marian

The Feast of Tabernacles (booths) takes
place on the 15th of the Hebrew month
Tishri. This was the seventh month on
the Hebrew calendar and usually occurs in
late September to mid-October. The feast
begins five days after the Day of Atonement
and at the time the fall harvest had just been
completed.
John 72 Now the Jewish festival
of Booths was near. 14About the middle of
the festival Jesus went up into the temple and
began to teach.
