Your Village Needs You! We're getting ready for the West Norfolk Village Games

On Sunday 29th June Massingham will go head to head with other villages in West Norfolk in the Village Games to be held at Lynn Sport. We're looking for captains and team players in every sport. It is a really good event to take part in.

This year, Great Massingham will be joining forces with Little Massingham, Harpley and Houghton and our teams will be competing in the category for larger villages. Massingham Win League Cup on 2nd April It was a lovely afternoon as the team bus left Massingham but by the time we reached Wells the mist had come down as well as the temperature. Right from kick-off Massingham were the better team but we had to wait thirty minutes for the first goal, headed in by Craig Foster. Although Massingham had many chances, a second goal, a header from Karl Harrison, didn’t come until the second half. Ingoldisthorpe then pulled one back with a penalty and just ten minutes to go. A tense end to the game! Bradley Davies was man of the match. (See picture of Bradley, right, taken by Sharon Whittred). Many thanks to all our supporters for braving the very cold conditions.

The Sister Laurence RAF Massingham Mu-seum will be on display on the 5th and 6th July in the Church. This will be the 15th time it has been up. It is showing some signs of deterioration, so it will need a revamp after it is dismantled. I have bought new storage boxes to store it away as it is taking up a lot of space in my Studio. At present, I am down sizing into my garage so need to compact everything. If you are at all interested in helping to erect all of this on Friday evening of the 4th July and/or dismantle and store it away on the Sunday - Monday, please contact me on:

Tapping House Hospice Coffee Evening Raises £1,230

The coffee evening organised by Chrissie Warnes and her team and held on 16th April was another huge success raising an amazing £1,230 for the Hospice appeal. So many of you from the village turned out to support the event, participate in the fun and enjoy a coffee and cake. Chrissie writes, “Once again a big thank you to all who gave prizes and helped in any way with the evening and, most of all, to all who supported us on the night. To date, we have raised a total of £1,230. We are always amazed at all the support we have received over the years when we have put on events and trust those who attend enjoy these occasions as much as we all do.”

Gert & Daisy.... Well how are yew all gitting on tergether? Hope yew awl hed plenty of chocolate fer Easter. Bert bought Gert a grut ol egg – thas the first time ever – she wus wondering what he wanted but whatever that wus he dint git it she reckon. Sid is still playing tennis but they are one man down cos Arthur stood on his balls up the hall and twisted his ankle. That must hev bin very painful for him; we hope Irene is mas-saging the affected area. Hev yew noticed the Old Rectory in Weasenham Road is up fer sale. That hev bin dun up proper noicely and is a snip at £1.4million. We wus thinking of clubbing in tergether to buy it but when we worked it owt there wouldn’t hev bin enough bedrooms for awl the grandchildren. There int no sheds either. Dint them gals dew well raising awl that money fer Tapping House – we heard they med over £1000. Yew never know when you moight need to go there so we loike to support them. They dint hev a plant stall though so thas gud that Mr Prickerton hev bin giving away awl his spare bee-friendly plants. We can’t remember what they’re called but we rekken in five years the hul of Massingham will be taken over by it. Never mind there’ll be plenty of honey. Don’t ferget our Quiz on May 10th up the Hall at 7.30pm. If you’re Norfolk yew should dew a lot better than them furriners. Thas ter raise money fer the Coronation Club. As Daisy is sort of retired now she ken go ter the Club so mek sure yew support it. She wus thinking bout going ter the Ladies Tennis Mornings fer the coffee, cake and James Cane but weren’t sure she’d hev toime to stay fer the tennis. We wus very sad to hear that our friend Hazel Goodricke died on Good Friday. She wus a lovely lady and we will miss her. Our thoughts go to her family. Next toime we write we will hev news from our Spanish tour. Hopefully the sun will be shining and we will be on the sunbeds. We moight hev to email it as we won’t be home before the deadline. Thought of the month:- Why does everything begin with ‘e’?

Strollers........... Strollers, Strugglers and Stragglers Sunday 27th April eight walkers set off from Harpley Dams to walk around Houghton. Two of us struggled up the first slope with breathing and knee problems but the banks of dandelions, bright blue skies and the accompanying bird song proved an excellent remedy. Having followed Peddar’s Way for nearly an hour we crossed a field of dandelions and cowslips and entered the wood at Bunkers Hill. This entailed precarious gymnastics over stiles but all arrived in one piece. The walk through these woods was a sheer delight with sparkling dappled light illuminating new leaves and gleaming beech trunks. We emerged to open fields in front of the fairy-tale cottage featured in BBC’s comedy ‘Grass’. Passing pigs and piglets, we eventually reached the Lodge on the road to Bircham. Here we turned right and made our way to Old Bottom where two of us stragglers bailed out and were collected by International Rescue in the shape of Rosemary in her car. Eventually, we all met up at the King’s Head in Great Bircham where, treated like VIPs, we ate a hearty Sunday lunch. Our next walk will be on Sunday 18th May. Make the effort. A Cleaner Village On Sat. 29th March twenty volunteers spent the morning ‘spring cleaning’ our village. Our task was made easier by members of the Toad Patrol for previously doing some pond cleaning but also due to many residents regularly picking up rubbish others have tossed aside. There is an appropriate name for such people but I’m too polite to use it! Even worse are those people who feel it is OK to fly-tip large items along our paths and lanes. Such people think that it is somebody else’s duty to clean up after them. Many of the items we found could quite easily have been taken to the recycling centre or even collected by our refuse collectors. My final moan concerns the use of black plastic bags. If you must dump your garden waste in a hedge or ditch, remove the plastic bag first. Plastic is a major cause of pollu-tion whereas garden waste will decompose. Generally, however, despite my moans we found little rubbish around our village. The Village Hall and play park deserve special

mention as they were almost litter free! Tennis Open Day Over thirty juniors took part in the Easter three day coaching programme. Hard on the heels of that, the Tennis and Multi-sports Club is organising an Open Day of tennis fun and games for young or old, fit or barely moving, expert or novice.

Note the date: Saturday 17th May. How hard can you hit the ball? We've got a speed of serve gun for the day. How many can you return against the Ball Machine? Learn to play mini-tennis with your young children – we will show you how and chill you out with refreshments and a BBQ.

Racket Amnesty Have you any unused tennis rackets you want to off load? Would you donate them? We're setting up two mini-tennis courts with portable mini-nets, on the lower court, so parents will find it easier to play with their young children. We badly need rackets we can lend out. Bobby’s Night The turn out for our ‘Remembering Our Bobby’ night on 24th April was rather dis-appointing but those who came enjoyed a free buffet provided by the Tennis and Multi-sports Club and an evening of fond memories. The raffle, run by Jilly Copeman and Mandy Brown, raised - with donations - £230 towards Bobby’s chosen charities; the Ducklings & the Practice Nurses. The second half of the evening was the showing of ‘Bobby’s Best Bits’- a collection of acts from Old Time Music Halls and pantomimes. These showed Bobby’s special talents and brought many of us to tears of laughter as they did each night of the show. Copies of this DVD, an absolute gem cre-ated by Shelly Whitmore, cost £7.50 each

and can be ordered at the Village Store. All monies will go to Bobby’s charities. Thursday 24th April also happened to be Paul Miller’s 64th birthday - he doesn’t look a day over 63! However, even this was upstaged by the sight of Mr Brun leaving the Village Hall with a very pretty doll in his arms! Andrew Bickerton

SAD NEWS With real sadness we report the death of Hazel Goodricke, aged 86 years, on 18th April. Many of you will have known her and her cheerful, friendly disposition. We send condolences to her family. Her funeral was held at Great Massingham, on 2nd May followed by cremation at Mintlyn.

Next Biodiversity Project Working Party Last year we planted numerous hellebores, stinking iris, foxgloves and ferns in the wood. These now face stiff competition from ram-pant competitors like blackberries, perennial grasses, nettles, cow parsley and goose grass. Our April working party fought back to remove much of this overgrowth before it overwhelmed our young plants which, on the whole, are thriving. Elsewhere, it was good to see red campion and king cups (see picture) doing particularly well. For the first time, many cowslips were seen in the water meadow and the wild flower meadow and these look set to multiply in future years. Last month’s working party also prepared some of the ground for sowing a wide range of woodland flowering species and aquatic plants. Just after Easter, the seeds were sown with great enthusiasm by our primary school chil-dren. The cost of the seed and other minor items was kindly met by the Parish Council. Our next working party will be on Saturday 10th May starting at about 10 am, at the site on Weasenham Road. If you are free that morning please join us. As usual, there will be tea, coffee, biscuits and good company plus just a smidgen of hard work. Mike Jackson

CHURCH NEWS Easter Lilies Once again our Church was beautifully decorated with lilies donated in memory of our loved ones. The displays were superb and our very warm thanks go to all who contributed and our excellent team of flower arrangers, led by Mrs G. Newton. We are indeed blessed with people who work so hard to help with the upkeep of our Church. Easter Day service was a well attended service led by Rev’d J Thomson. It was a joyous occasion with an Easter egg hunt for the children afterwards. The Easter garden was beautifully made by Mr and Mrs Henson, with helpers, and we thank them. Now would be a special time to thank our retired clergy for their excellent ministry to us. Take a bow Rev’d Julian Thomson and Rev Canon Michael Paddison as without your ministry we would not be able to have our Eucharistic services. Church cleaning will take place at 10am on the 2nd,3rd and 4th Saturdays each month, the day before our planned services. We would appreciate any help at those times.

Produce Stall Our first produce stall of this year will take place on Saturday 3rd May at 9-30am in Church. We would be pleased to receive any donations of cakes or produce. These stalls continue through the Summer on the 1st Saturday in the month. Wednesday Coffee afternoons will con-tinue every Wednesday afternoon between 3pm and 4-30pm. Everyone is invited for a cordial drink and cakes. Any donations for refreshments will be appreciated. Any funds raised are for our toilet fund which is approaching twelve thousand pounds. Toilet Plans The sketch plans for our toilets and kitchen will be on display in Church from May. If the PCC approves the draft plans then we will move on to the next legal stages and then the grant raising.
