Malmesbury Park News www.malmesburypark.com Issue 5 9 th November 2018 Anti-Bullying Day We have recently held an anti-bullying day. Our definition of bullying is: “Bullying is behaviour by an individual or group, repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally.” In order to help the children understand this, we use the term STOP (Several Times On Purpose). We believe that bullying can take many forms (for instance, cyber- bullying via text messages, social media or gaming, which can include the use of images and video. We talk to the children, advising that it may include: spreading rumours about an individual or group, physically hurting or name calling. Please do talk to your child about what they believe bullying is and what they should do if they become aware of it. Attendance and Punctuality Good qualifications, understanding responsibility, making friends and having the chance to grow as an individual are all important ingredients in a child’s educational experience. For this to happen, children need to attend school regularly. We operate a first day calling system. This means we ask you to phone the school on the first day your child is absent. If we have not heard from you by the start of the school day, the School Attendance Office (Mrs. Frend) will contact you to check the reason for your child’s absence. We have an answer machine in operation 24 hours a day, so it is easy for you to notify us of a child’s absence. Please phone the school and leave your child’s name, class and reason for absence. Did you know the following: 1 day off per school year = 99.5% attendance 10 days off per school year = 94.7% attendance 20 days off per school year = 90% attendance. 90% attendance sounds good, but means that your child misses on average: a whole year off school by the time they complete their education one half day every week nearly four weeks every school year over one school year in a school career. Children with poor attendance fall behind with school work. Please note if your child gets an unauthorised late mark this will affect their overall attendance. All children should be in class by 8.50am. Lateness is detrimental to your child’s learning as they miss the vital part of the lesson. Whole school attendance on Friday 9 th November = 95.9% Open Morning Lots of parents came in to our open morning for the ‘A’ classes. This is such a fantastic opportunity for you to come in and see what your child does in lesson, get a chance to see the learning in action and take part! We asked parents what they thought and they said: “ The children were really well organised..” “The use of resources to inspire the children using books, video and thesaurus really did help their learning.” “The class were very well behaved, the children were listening and paying attention. “It was great to be able to join the lesson and to see how well the children work and how great the teachers are.” “Being able to come in helped me to understand the learning process and see the classroom rouitnes. Thank you for letting us come and watch such a joy.” The other classes will be holding open mornings on: ‘B’ classes – Tuesday 13 th November (9.00 10.30am) ‘C’ classes – Tuesday 20 th November (9.00 10.30am) Parents’ Evenings – These will be held on: Wednesday 14 th November (3.30 6.30pm) Thursday 15 th November (3.30 7.30pm) We use an online booking system which you are able to access via a link on the school website, or it can be directly accessed via https://mppsparentsevening.youcanbook.me. Curriculum News - We are now two weeks into our new projects. Across Key Stage 2 the children are immersed in finding out about the past through their History led projects. We have met some interesting characters around school, as the children discover characters from long ago. The children are enjoying their new projects and talking enthusiastically about their learning. They have been finding out lots of interesting facts and sorting fact from fiction - I learned this week from year 5 that Viking warriors did NOT all have horns on their helmets! Please talk to your children about what they are learning and perhaps look up further information together on the web or visit the library. In Year 2 the children are beginning their new Wacky races project, finding out about wheels and axles and building buggies to win the Race of the Year. The SLT have shared their buggies – the children will be able to tell you which one was the most successful and which was the most nicely decorated. In Year 1 the children are beginning their Art Attack project and will be finding out about a range of artists and their work before producing their own masterpieces, whilst FS2 are continuing to enjoy traditional tales and learning about a range of characters in Once Upon A Story. You will be able to see some of the new learning during Parent’s evening next week – we hope to see you in school. Safeguarding – We take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. Should you have any concerns about a child then please ask to speak to a member of the school staff or Mrs. Smith (Designated Safeguarding Lead & Deputy Headteacher). Dogs on the playground – We do ask that no dogs come onto the school playground or site, even when held in an adult’s arms. We have several children who are quite frightened of dogs. End of term – The last day of term will be Friday 21st December. We will close at the usual time. Admission to Nursery If your child was born between 01.09.14. and 31.08.15 and you would like her/him to be considered for a place in our Nursery, please complete and return an application form (available from the chool office) to school as soon as possible to enable your son/daughter’s to be added to the waiting list. Admission to Reception - September 2019 If your child was born between 01.09.14. and 31.08.15. you can now apply online by logging onto the Bournemouth Council website at www.bournemouth.gov.uk and follow the link to ‘Apply Online’. Paper forms are also available from The Childrens Information Service, Town Hall, Bournemouth – Telephone no. 01202 456223. The final date for submission to the Authority is 15th January 2019. To give yourself the best chance of being offered the school of your choice, please submit a preference as soon as possible before the closing date. It is strongly recommended that you include your catchment school as one of your three preferences as last year we had more applications than places and some families were left disappointed.
