I hope you will enjoy the creation of mama and baby manatee! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have along the way. Have fun!

Materials You Will Need:

• Crochet hook size: G/4mm

• Worsted weight yarn: Gray, plus 1 yard of darker gray

• Yarn needle

• One pair of 12 mm safety eyes and one pair of 7 mm safety eyes*

• Polyester fiber fill stuffing

*Note: The safety eyes are also called shank back eyes; they are sold at Etsy, Walmart, your local craft store, Amazon, ebay, etc. The safety eyes are highly recommended, but they can be substituted with black buttons or yarn if you prefer.

Final measurement for the finished manatee will be about 8.5 inches long and 3 inches tall, and the baby manatee will be 4.5 inches long and 2 inches tall.

*Single crochet decrease stitch explanation:

Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.

Manatee's Body

With gray yarn,Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (18 sts)

At this point, insert the 12 mm safety eyes between Rounds 4 and 5, with 9 stitches in between across the bottom. Firmly press the washers onto the backs of the eyes. Stuff the manatee firmly. Continue on with the body…

Finish stuffing firmly, and make sure stuffing is even throughout the body..R31: (Dec 1), 6 times.

Fasten off and use yarn tail to sew the small opening closed.

Manatee Nose

With gray yarn,R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (18 sts)R4-7: Sc 18. (4 total rows)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Sew the nose tothe manatee, between the eyes (see picture).

Now, take a long strand of dark gray yarn and sew

two tiny nostrils onto the nose of the manatee.

Flippers (make 2)

With gray yarn, R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch. (4 sts)

R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (6 sts)R3: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (8 sts)R4-7: Sc 8. (4 total rows)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the body. Do not stuff. For each fin, count 4 rows back fromthe eyes, and then sew to the body.

Tail

With gray yarn,

R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (18 sts)R4: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (24 sts)R5-8: Sc 24. (4 total rows)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Sew to the lower half of the back of the manatee's body.

And there you go, you are done with the mama manatee! Here's how to make a baby/mini manatee togo with her.

Baby Manatee's Body

Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (18 sts)R4: Sc 18. (18 sts)

R5: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (24 sts)R6-9: Sc 24. (4 total rows)

Now, insert your 7mm safety eyes between R2and R3 of the body, about 5 sts apart across the

row. Firmly press the washers onto the backsof the eyes. Continue on with the body...

R10: (Sc 6, dec 1), 3 times. (21 sts)

R11: Sc 21. (21 sts)R12: (Sc 5, dec 1), 3 times. (18 sts)

R13: Sc 18. (18 sts)Begin stuffing the body.R14: (Sc 4, dec 1), 3 times. (15 sts)

R15: (Sc 3, dec 1), 3 times. (12 sts)Finish stuffing the body firmly.

R16: (Dec 1), 6 times.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread your yarn tail onto your yarn needle and sew closed the

small opening left at the back of the body.

Nose

R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)R3-4: Sc 12.

Fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing to the body. Sewthe nose onto the manatee's body just below the level of theeyes. Right before you finish sewing all the way around, stuffthe nose with a little stuffing.

Flippers

R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch. (4 sts)R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (6 sts)R3-4: Sc 6.

Fasten off. Leave long tail for sewing. Sew to the sides of the body, about 2 rows back from the eyes.

Tail
