Week 3, Term 2 Tena koutou katoa Well done to the students who completed their first week of sports. The Coaches and Managers were impressed with the attitude of the students and that everyone was in the correct uniform. If you have any questions or issues see your child's coach/manager first. If the issue is not resolved please make contact with the “Sports Committee” by emailing [email protected].

Please be aware we do have behaviour expectations, guidelines, rules, policies and procedures in place to keep all of our children and team at Mamaku school safe. These often get sent home or are in the newsletter and/or on the school’s website. These can be viewed at school. Remind our learners about the “8 Simple Rules” and “HEART values”. Also keep an eye out for the new positives that the students are coming home with. A big thanks to the Home and School who helped cover the cost. Reminder to students, once you collect 5 Yellow positives to come and see me to choose your prize and to explain why you got the positives. Cars are speeding past the school and cutting corners from South road into Tarena street. This is illegal and very dangerous for our students. It is only 40km past the school. We have also noted children not in car seats and students biking to school without helmets, if this continues the police will have to be contacted. We also have concerns about students crossing roads and we are discussing this with the students about what they need to do for their safety. We are in the process of writing to the Council about the road and crossings needed. As adults and parents we are the role models to our children “It's not what we say, it's what we do that counts”. The next BOT Meeting is on this Thursday, 6.00pm in staffroom. Agenda items up in the office. The focus at the moment is the BOT Elec-tions. If you are interested in becoming a BOT member please come from 6 - 6.30pm for a casual discussion on the BOT responsibilities.

All students should be training for the Mamaku Cross Country that is in week 6. It is really important that we are building up our fitness. This will be held at the Mamaku Reserve and Kings Hill. Ngā mihi nui Gary Veysi

Room 6 are planning a sustainability trip this term. The idea is that as a Tōtara whānau we will look at how to be guardians of our environment by picking up rubbish in the local area, as well as planting native trees to show we are kaitiaki. As the concept is Kaitiakitanga we look forward to the support of our families. If you can donate an outdoor plant that would be awesome.

We are keen to enhance the community of Mamaku in or-der to understand the importance of not only looking after one another, but that without an effort to protect what we have, it could be gone in the future.

Pink Shirt Day Bullying-Free NZ Week ends on Friday 17 May with the Mental Health Foundation's Pink Shirt Day.

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, mobilising their whole-school, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

Anyone can celebrate Pink Shirt Day. Whether you’re a teacher, student, work-place or individual, join the movement by registering today.
