A train takes 18 seconds to pass completely through a station 162 m

long and 15 seconds through another station 120 m long. The length of the train (in metres) is:

• Let us assume the length of the train = X

• Speed = Distance / time

• (162 +X) /18 = (120+x ) / 15 (now multiply both sides by 3)


A train of length 150 m takes 10 seconds to pass over another train

100 m long coming from the opposite direction. If the speed of

the first train be 30 kmph, the speed of the second train is:

• Total distance = 150 + 100 = 250

• Speed = distance / time

• 250 / 10 = 25 meters per second


Solution …

• 25 * 18/5 = 90 KM per hour

• Speed of one train is 30 KM per hour

• The speed of the other train is 90-30 = 60 KM per hour

• Answer.


I want to call-up a friend. I remember the telephone number but am confused

about the 3-digit country code:What I do recall however is that all the digits of the country code are different. At the most, how many calls will I have to make to get through to my friend?

• For the first digit, we have 9 options (zero is not there), now we have 9*8 options (zero can be there in the next 2 digits).

• 9*9*8 = 648 answer.


Some blue and some green marbles are placed in three boxes such that one box contains only blue marbles, another only

green marbles and the third both blue and green marbles. These boxes however, have all been mislabeled. By selecting only one marble from only one of the

three boxes, the boxes have to be identified correctly. What is the label on

the box from which you pick up the marble?

• At the end, we can have 250 or 750. Thus we have 2 options for each of these:

• (162 +X) /6 = (120+x ) / 5

• Solving ….

• 810 + 5X = 720 + 6X

• X = 90 (the length of the train is 90 meters)

In a mock question MBA Entrance exam having four options, a correct answer

fetches one mark and an Incorrect answer penalises you by a quarter of a mark. You have so far attempted 136 questions (250

questions), of which I00 have been answered correctly. Since there is not much time left, you decide to guess and mark all

the remaining answers as ‘Options 2’. What is your score likely to be?


Solution

• Total number of questions = 250 • Correct 100*1 = 100 marks• 36*1/4 = 9 negative marks, so total marks 91. • Remaining questions = 250-136 =114• ¼ of114 may be correct (there are 4 options,

so one will be correct the probability is ¼) = 28.5 *1 = 28.5

• 86 *1/4 = 21.5 (nearby) so 91+28.5-21.5 = 97 answer.


A Four-digit number is denoted as XXYY, where ‘Y’ is even. If’X is

odd, what is the probability that a randomly formed number complying with the above

requirements is divisible by 4?


Solution

• Let us write down all possibilities:

• XXYY, YYXX, XYXY,YXYX, XYYX, YXXY

• Whereever we have XY at the end, the number may be divisible by 4 (the chances are 50%).similarly if the number ends in YY, 50% chances are there that it may be divisible by 4.

• Thus 5/6 *1/2 = 5/12 answer.


Goti travels for 14 hours 40 minutes. He covers one half of the journey by train at 60 kmph and the rest half by road at 50 kmph. The total distance travelled by him (in

km) is

• Let us find the average of Goti’s speed.

• 1/50 + 1/60 = 110 / 3000 or 3000/110 *2 = 54.54.

• Thus he will travel 54.54 *14.66 = 800 KM .


Vivek lost 20% by selling a watch for Rs 64. What per cent shall he

gain or loss by selling it for Rs 100?

• 25% profit

• 64 * 100/80 = 80

• 20/80 *100 = 25%


An electric ian sells a room heater for Rs 322, gaining 1/6 th of its cost

price. Find his gain or loss%.

• 1/6*100 = 16.66% answer.


A grocer allows a discount of 20% on the marked price. How much per cent above the C.P. must he mark his goods to make a gain of 20%?

• Let us assume cost to be 100. final selling price : 120. printed price = 120 * 100/80

• = 150

• Thus he must mark 50% above cost.


What is the area of the shaded region?


Solution

• Area of bigger rectangle:

• 22*14 = 308

• Area of smaller rectangle = 140

• Thus the area of shaded region

• = 168 answer.


There are 2 paths in a square. What is the area of those paths?


Solution

• 24*4 *2 = 192 – (4*4) = 176 answer.


Question on reasoning • Coach John sat with the score cards of Indian players from

the 3 games in a one-day cricket tournament where the same set of players played for India and all the major batsmen got out. John summarized the batting performance through three diagrams, one for each games. In each diagram, the three outer triangles communicate the number of runs scored by the three top scores from India, where K, R, S, V, and Y represent Kaif, Rahul, Saurav, Virender, and Yuvraj respectively. The middle triangle in each diagram denotes the percentage of total score that was scored by the top three Indian scorers in that game. No two players score the same number of runs in the same game. John also calculated two batting indices for each player based on his scores in the tournaments; the R-index of a batsman is the difference between his highest and lowest scores in the 3 games while the M-index is the middle number, if his scores are arranged in a non-increasing order.

• Answer = cannot be determined = as - It is clear that after 5 rounds, all the teams have equal scores. However, there could be difference in their goals, so the winner will be on the basis of goal difference. However, Germany, Pakistan have equal goal difference. We don’t have information about the match between spain and Argentina (which was in 4th round). We know that Spain had won the match, however, if Spain won by 1-0, all teams are equal, if spain won by 2-0, then Spain will be the winner. Answer.

• 252*70/30 = 588 answer.


In how many ways can we form 3 digit numbers from 3,4,5,6, which is

greater than 500?

• For the first digit, we have only 2 options,

What is the sum of squares of the first 10 natural numbers?

• Sum = n(n+1) (2N+1) / 6

• =10(10+1) (2*10 +1) / 6

• =(10*11*21) / 6

• =385 answer.


The compound interest on Rs. 2000 for 3 years is Rs. 315.25. The

rateof interest is

• 2000* (1+rate)^3 = 2315.25

• (1+r)^3 = 2315.25 / 2000

Population of a country is 100 crores in 2000, at growth rate of 2% what will be the population in 2020?

• 100 * (1.02)^20

• =148.6 crores approx.


Toffees are bought at the rate of 8 for a rupee. To gain 60%, they must

be sold at:(a) 6 for a rupee (b) 5 for a

rupee (c) 9 for two rupees(d) 24 for five rupees

Now we have 8 toffees for 100 paise. Les us add 60% in cost 160 paise for 8 toffees. Thus one toffee is of 20 paise. So (b) is the answer.
