Dear Incoming Second Grade Students and Families,

Second grade is a very challenging year, but also one filled with new discovery and understanding. To help you prepare for next year, I have made up a summer reading list, a book review form, as well as a packet of math review work to be completed and returned in August.

The summer reading list is comprised of four books. Each of the books can be found at the Chicago Public Library and/or most bookstores. It is mandatory that all four be read over the summer before second grade. The list is:

1. Henry and Mudge: The First Book of Their Adventures by Cynthia Rylant

2.Grasshopper on the Road by Arnold Lobel 3.Mercy Watson Fights Crime by Kate DiCamillo

4.Young Cam Jansen and the Library Mystery by David A Adler

The books above are a mix of picture books and beginner chapter books. They have a variety of interest for most children and cover a range of language art strategies that have been taught in 1st grade. Then, in 2nd grade we will once again cover; main idea, cause and effect, setting, theme, and grammatical com-

ponents. These are some of the techniques authors use to make their writing in-

teresting. In 2nd grade, students will also be reading books by the same authors

and so it is important to be introduced to them during the summer. Please read

and discuss each of these books with your son or daughter to enhance their un-

derstanding. Each child must complete the book reviews.
