Book Week Performances & Book Week Parade Book Week 2019 is held from Saturday, August 17th to Friday, August 23rd. This year the Children's Book Council Australia have chosen the theme "Reading is My Secret Power".

There is a buzz of excitement as students and teachers start discussing their plans for the Book Week Parade. The Manly West Book Parade is one where all students (and staff) dress as a favourite book character and join in a bit of frivolity. It is on Thursday 5th September, from 11:50am – approx. 12:45. Parents are welcome to watch as students parade with their class. It is always helpful if students carry a sign indicating their character or the actual book. Some photos to inspire...

To celebrate Book Week we have performances by Craig Christie called Big Dreams which will be presented by

Perform Education and complement the Library Programs. These will be held next Tuesday 27th August. The cost

of these have been included on the semester accounts. Thank you to Mrs Swick and Mrs Burke for their

organisation of these programs.

Deputy Principal Musica Viva Comes to Manly West

Students in Kindergarten, Year 1, 2 and 3 have the opportunity to enjoy this show involving a mandolin, musical saw, drums, banjo, cello and acrobatics. “Students discover how music can influence our actions, thoughts and emotions through this energetic and unusual pairing of music making and circus.” Some K-3 students enjoyed this experience on Monday 19th August and other K-3 classes will watch the performance on Monday 26th August.

Year 1 Partnering with Year 10 students As part of the Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) program at Mackellar Girls High School, Year 10 students visit us each year to coach Year 1 in fundamental movement and ball skills. Year 1 students are involved in the 4 week program on either a Tuesday or Thursday this term. Year 2 in the Kitchen Garden

It was a delightful day in the garden yesterday for Year 2. As part of their Science unit, ‘Watch it Grow’, students explored the kitchen garden, observed various stages of the compost process and planted a sunflower seed. We learned that a sunflower head has approximately 2000 sunflower seeds. Year 2 will tend to their planted seed on a designated day each week and return for a follow up lesson in the garden on Tuesday 10th September. Thank you to Angie Penn, Kitchen Garden Specialist Teacher, for sharing her expertise and passion with Year 2.

Please indicate your interest through email [email protected] by Tuesday 27th August. Please insert K-2 Maths Parent Workshop in the subject line and your name and grade/s of your child/children at Manly West in the body of the email. Library News What generous families we have here at Manly West! It was so fantastic to see so many students with their parents &/or grandparents choosing books to donate to our library! Thank you so much for giving the gift of reading to this year’s students but also to those that enrol in the future. We will try our best to get your donations ready with the special sticker to borrow by next week’s library lessons. Please be patient as about 2400 dollars’ worth of books need stickers inserted! Thank you so much for your kind generosity!

Please remember all students have until next Friday, August 30th, 2019 to complete their Premier’s Reading Challenge online. All students need to do is log in with their DET user name & password at the PRC website, https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html , to add your book titles &/or id numbers. Simply print it out & bring it in to get all your prizes and reading fame! You CAN do it!!!

Hope the date of our fun & fanciful BOOK PARADE is inked into your diaries! Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 5th, 2019 after recess. Lots of friends have been borrowing books of their characters and gathering all their costumes, props and signs to put together for the parade. We’ll have a living library at school very soon!

Thank you all again & happy reading!

Kitchen Garden Stage 2 This week Year 3 are visiting the Kitchen Garden for Education Week and Year 4 are tasting purple, green and white cauliflower grown in the garden with Indian spices - yum! Year 2 Year 2 came to the Kitchen Garden yesterday to do their first lesson from their Science Unit "Watch it Grow" and plant some sunflower seeds. They learn about growth and change through seeing seeds grow into plants and seeing the decomposition of food waste into compost. Donations! We need donations of t-shirts to make t-shirt bags to give away on Carnival day. Adult sized t-shirts are best and we can accept t-shirts with small holes or stains on them. We need donations of small-medium plastic pots. We are using these to grow plants to sell in the Kitchen Gar-den stall. We also need donations of plastic milk bottle lids for an art project. Please drop off all donations to the garden shed on Wednesdays or Thursdays. School Compost Bins Please sign up to help turn our compost bins and water the Kitchen Garden. Go to Signupgenius.com search under my email address, [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits. If you haven't done this before email me and we can arrange a garden orientation. If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, you must be signed up at least once per term. Please do not put ANY bags in the bins, even if they say they are compostable or biodegradable. War on Waste - Waste Sorting Station for Carnival At Manly West we are continuing our own war on waste by trying to reduce waste as much as possible. Please help us by BYO reusable water bottles, coffee cups and bags to all events at Manly West! At our Carnival on September 21st we are going to have a waste sorting station. Please email me if you'd like to be added to a roster to help 'man' the bins on the day. This would be IN ADDITION TO any other commit-ment you have on another stall. Small projects We always need people to help with small projects like applying for grants and other jobs like redesigning the chicken house and run. If you have some skills or time to spare, the Kitchen Garden and the P & C Environment Committee would love to hear from you. Help be part of the solution!! Edible Gardening Workshop - August 31st Have you always wanted to grow your own food but don't know how? Come along to this course. Cost is $15 members/$25 non- members. Bookings are essential. http://www.permaculturenorthernbeaches.org.au/event-calendar/2019/edible-gardening-workshop

Thanks, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle
